Chapter 186: Realization

The door was to Marcella’s back and she couldn’t see who was standing there but seeing the exhaustion on the cop’s face was a little relief for her. Someone the cop hated was standing there and that gave her some hope.

Marcella tried to look back but before she could see who was standing there, the cop walked to the door and blocked her way. She heard some muffled murmurs and the detective grunted audibly.

Marcella heard someone else stepping closer and the detective decided to storm off.

"You must give me the copy of Mrs. Crawford’s statement, Detective Keenan! Here on out, you will talk to me first before you talk to my client."

Marcella’s eyes brightened hearing that voice. "Uncle Karl!" she stood up.

She didn’t see her uncle there but John Emerson was standing by the door. Marcella was pleasantly surprised. She didn’t think that an FBI agent came to her aide.

"I was just telling the detective why I wouldn’t need that many bullets to finish off one person!" Marcella walked to him with a smile.

She looked for Uncle Karl. He was walking with the detective to probably learn more about the case against her. She almost walked past John Emerson, but he blocked her. Pressing his hands on the threshold of the door, he pinned her. He leaned to her eye level and she could feel his breath on her lips.

Marcella didn’t like this development. Squinting her eyes, she looked at him. He stared at her and she didn’t break eye contact.

"One might argue that you used so many bullets on him just to disfigure his face enough to disintegrate him; out of hate. I mean, isn’t he the one who killed your sister and brother-in-law? Also, if the rumors are right, Paul is Antony’s father. He refused to acknowledge him and tried to kill him..." John smirked.

Marcella smiled with her lips pressed. "One must have a vivid imagination to come up with that story. Is there any proof Paul killed Mellissa? The last time I checked up, my sister died in the crossfire between gangs. Isn’t that how the investigation was concluded?" She asked.

She observed John to see his reaction. She talked to John often. He would invite her to the firing range and often they talk. She had a feeling that John still didn’t get over Mellissa and was pining over her.

She wanted to know if she was talking to Agent Emerson, or her sister’s first love John.

John’s eyes softened considerably. "What did he say? Did he suffer enough?" he asked.

Marcella gulped. She looked into his eyes and saw the pain he was trying hard to hide. He failed miserably as his eyes reddened with tears. She knew that he was the guy who fell in love with her sister and still wished for her happiness; the guy who was still broken with her death.

Just enough...

She was about to say. Now that she thought back, she was not even thinking much about her sister at that moment. Because if she did, she would have let him suffer longer. She was worrying for Tony and she didn’t take as much time as she needed. She could have planned differently. She could have waited for Henry and let them kidnap Paul and do to him what he did to Mellissa. That would have been a good punishment.

But she was only thinking about Tony. Nothing else. Not even about Joey.

She realized something. Something that had been bothering her for long—that resentment she had toward Tony. She now understood him. She understood why he did what he did. Why he protected her with everything he got.

She thought that he should have considered her feelings for her sister if he truly loved her that much. But no, that was not possible because he loved her that much. Yes, there is altruism in love, but that only extends to the person one loves and beyond that, towards others, that altruism dies.

Everyone is selfish in love. Love builds a bubble. That bubble only has place for two. Yes, there can be more than one bubble in each person’s heart. But there is one bubble—the golden bubble that one would not allow to break into. That bubble contains that one person oe loves more than anything.

For Tony, that person was her, is her.

She understood why Tony ensured her safety before going out into the night. He didn’t fall asleep or quit trying to save Mellissa. He knew Mellissa was important to her and he gave his everything to find Mellissa and his brother. He could give his everything to search for Mellissa because he knew she was safe.

Just like she left Joey with Randy and came for Tony!

When the situation called for it, she did the same. She knew Tony was with Paul and it was well established that Paul wanted Joey for whatever reason. Never once did the thought of negotiating Joey with Paul came to her mind.

Wait... Is Joey the golden bubble person for me and not Tony? Do I love Joey more than I love Tony?

Marcella wondered.

She asked her heart and the proof was in the pudding. Joey’s life was always in danger. Paul had wanted Joey always. But she stopped Tony from killing Paul even though it would have ended all their plights.

She didn’t want Tony to regret someday in the future that he killed his own father. But she had no regrets killing Paul that day. Only Tony was in her heart and mind when she pulled the trigger to kill Paul. She broke her vow to herself and took a life and she had no regrets because she knew she protected Tony.

Goodness! I love Tony more than I thought!

"Marcella!"

John’s voice snapped her out of her reverie. "What?" she looked at him.

She was scared; this time for herself. Although she didn’t regret killing Paul, she didn’t want to take the path her father took. She had already placed a foot in that exact path.

Can I walk back?
