Chapter 174: Uneasiness

Tony didn’t mind her and tried to walk off.

"You do not want to let her know. Trust me," Mary insisted.

Tony was not at all pleased with Mary grabbing him. He almost slapped her. He was that enraged he wanted to hit an old woman. Mary was someone who valued propriety and I made Tony think when she was acting brash with him in this issue.

"I’ll talk to her, Sir. Please... Please, it’s for the best. I’m a woman, I know. She’ll listen to me if I talk to her delicately. I will ask Mrs. Crawford to keep away from Beth. I can see she wants to cause trouble between the two of you. Do not let her win," Mary begged.

Tony stopped to look at Mary’s face. He could not say that Mary knew nothing about his wife. Mary spends a lot of time with Marcella and she might be right. He knew Marcella was depressed about not getting pregnant. He didn’t want to add to it.

"Burn these photographs," he told Mary and walked upstairs.

Whatever it was, he didn’t want Marcella to see those photographs. If what Mary said was true and Marcella was insecure, he didn’t want her to worry or let any conversation arise about those photographs. He didn’t look at them anyway.

When he went to their room, Marcella was drying her hair. She smiled seeing him. "Are you going to take a shower?" she asked.

"I am," he said and got the towel from her hands.

Sitting beside her, he gently dried her hair. Holding a bunch of her hair in his hand, he took in the scent. "You’re so pretty, Marcella," he said.

"You think so?" she raised her brows.

He saw the flush of red on her cheeks and smiled. She looked surprised and happy that he said it.

"Yes, what’s the surprise there? You are the prettiest woman in the whole world," he said and watched her face brighten up.

Maybe Mary was right! Maybe she was feeling insecure. Maybe he did the right thing by hiding the truth from her. His intent was pure and so it didn’t matter that he lied.

It was not like he was going to ignore it. He will handle that woman in his way without raising the suspicions of Marcella. And Mary would be better suited to talk about the dangers of that woman to Marcella. Marcella would listen to Mary as she considers her a motherly figure.

Sometimes, when faced with a dilemma people usually take the easy way out. Tony too, not wanting to talk to her by himself, outsourced his job to Mary. Since Marcella did not complain about anything to him, he decided to keep it that way.

He held her hand and kissed it. There was no way he was going to let go of her. He will make sure she stays secure in his arms.

-----

That Thanksgiving, Paul Romano invited them to their house. Paul and Maggie would visit Joey at times. Most times, Marcella would arrange so that they would meet in a public place. She wanted to be careful around Paul. She didn’t want him to be accusing her of doing something she never did. Among other protections, she utilized the protection of public spaces.

Paul was very humble and caring when he invited Marcella to the Thanksgiving in his house. She almost thought that Paul might have turned a new leaf until he asked her to bring "her husband" with her.

She regretted feeling bad for him for a few seconds when he begged her to let him spend time with his grandson at Thanksgiving.

Did he forget that he made his grandson an orphan?

She had to constantly remind herself that Paul was a murderer and he still hadn’t acknowledged Tony as his son. Paul was trying every manipulation in the book to try and get on her good side. While talking to him, she figured that he was worried she might have figured out the truth that he killed Mellissa and Andrew.

He was scared of her for some reason. Marcella thought it must have been connected to the secret powerful guardian she had. If that person could make Daniel Schmidt scared, Paul was nothing.

She didn’t let Paul know that she knew. She didn’t want Joey’s stability to be affected.

Paul did let it slip that he was a little worried about Tony’s bright future in politics. He sounded sad and scared.

"I always liked you," he lied without any conscience. "Even though you were just a girl, you had inherited your father’s smarts! You would have been the best asset for any family."

Marcella didn’t know why he scared her. He treated her as a pest and caused her suffering in the past. He never once complimented her. If anything, his wife berated her at any chance.

Marcella didn’t think he was complimenting her. She couldn’t even fathom what his evil mind was thinking.

He also pried about her pregnancy or lack thereof. Marcella ignored him. He sounded happy that she was not pregnant. Was he happy Tony was not able to sire a child yet—she didn’t know. Paul probably was mocking Tony for her infertility. It hurt her. It wouldn’t have hurt her that much if Paul had blamed her for their childlessness.

It added to her worries. If she didn’t get pregnant, some would blame her and some would blame Tony. Tony would be mocked in either case. It won’t be good for his aspirations.

Tony still was not taking it seriously. She wondered if she should make a doctor’s appointment to check on her health. She decided to talk to Tony about it. She didn’t know how to bring it up.

Marcella informed Tony about Paul’s suggestion. She had no intention of eating in Paul Romano’s house. Who knows? He might even poison them. Tony agreed with her.

Three days before Thanksgiving, Marcella went to Tailor Caruso’s shop. She wanted to choose fabrics for her husband’s suit. She made it a habit to get him a new suit every month. Her husband probably is the only man with so many clothes. She didn’t regret it.

Tony should be the most well-dressed man in the whole world! Otherwise, what was the purpose of all the money they have?

Usually, she should avoid dressing him so luxuriously considering he wants to run. But then again, everyone knew he was wealthy. What was the use of pretending to be one of the middle-class people in the way they dress? Even when she meets with people, she dresses in her usual way. People would recognize her as a wealthy woman just by a glance. But that never stopped her from making friends.

People are not stupid. Only if they dress like others will they look like brown-nosers. People will get wary of them thinking that they have an agenda to pretend to be just like them when they are not.

Also, women loved good-looking men. It would help him get more votes if he used his star-like appearance.

She was in for a surprise there.
