Chapter 168: Tide of Unease
Chapter 168: Tide of Unease
The next morning, while Tony was showering, he called for Marcella. Marcella went to the bathroom thinking he needed his towel.
He did not want the towel.
"Join me, Birdie," he pulled her in the shower.
"I was preparing breakfast!" Marcella could only complain as her clothes got wet. He hugged her and didn’t let go.
"I don’t need breakfast," he made sure she was wet all over.
Having no other way, Marcella got out of her clothes grumbling about her childish husband. Tony didn’t care for her grumbles. His smile widened seeing her bare skin. He pulled her into the shower.
"Stop it, Tony!" Marcella tried to hold his hand.
As the hot water touched her skin, she felt stings at some parts of her back and neck. It happened as she struggled to get out of his hold the previous night. He had dug his nails into her skin and it had caused scratches. She didn’t realize it was that bad but it hurt. She didn’t want to let Tony know that she was hurting. He would feel bad for hurting her.
She casually turned to face him but he hugged her from behind. "Does it hurt a lot, Birdie?" he asked. His throat bobbed as he tried to swallow the dark emotion rising from his chest.
He was mad at himself. When she got up in the morning, he noticed she was wincing. In the closet, she was checking something on the mirror but seeing him, she smiled and got out. He knew something was wrong. He asked her to join the shower to have a look.
He was ashamed of himself. He didn’t have the guts to face her. The warm water from the shower mixed with his warm tears of remorse. Even afer he hurt her this badly, she could smile at him and kiss him. She could still love him.
"I’m sorry, Birdie... I didn’t know why I was so...I’m sorry. I’m sorry..."
Marcella tried to look at his face but he didn’t let her. She didn’t know what to say. She held his hand and kissed it. She hoped her thoughts reached him. She was not mad at him. She was not scared of him.
"You made me uncomfortable, Tony. But you set it right. These scratches will heal soon. Don’t read too much into this. Let’s consider this an accident and move on. Nothing has changed between us. You still are my safe place. Remember that." She leaned on him.
She hoped her words reached his heart. She wouldn’t want him to be conscious around her. He was her safe place. He was a strong support beside her and enabled her to achieve a lot. She didn’t want any of that to change just because of that. She knew Tony would not act this way toward her again. He loved her too much for that.
Tony leaned on her shoulder and she patted his head. He said nothing but she could feel his breathing get steadier. He must have forgiven himself.
Days passed and the anniversary of death of Joey’s parents arrived. They visited their grave as a family. Marcella was upset that her sister’s death was not avenged yet. She didn’t let that affect her much. Paul Romano will be handled one way or another. She was told that Paul Romano and his wife visited their grave too. That got her mad.
Neither Paul nor Maggie contacted her that day. She counted that as a blessing. Tony too was not good the entire day as he was mulling over something. He stayed home the entire day and that was a bigger blessing for her.
"I’m glad I got to marry you, Birdie," he said.
Marcella could agree with him. Marrying him and having the chance to raise a sweetie like Joey were the good things that came out of such a terrible ordeal. She didn’t know whether she could ever move on from it but she had to try. What happened, happened. She should look forward for the future.
The next day was their wedding anniversary. Marcella didn’t want to spend it so elaborately. She wanted to have a peaceful dinner and a long night with him. She would have loved to have him with her the whole day but he had to go to the office that day.
He did bring her breakfast to the bed that morning. She woke up to his smiling face and a hot plate of pancakes and coffee with a rose on the side. That was enough to brighten her day. Even Tony informing her that he had to go to work that day didn’t discourage her. She sent him off after making him promise that he would be back early.
Since she had the entire day for herself, she decided to bake a cake. She didn’t bake cakes usually and she spent the day cooking and baking. After the cake was finished, she decided to decorate their bedroom. She changed the sheets, brought flowers from the garden, and made sure the room smelled nice.
Joey was waddling around the house. She gave a little taste of the icing and Joey fell in love with it. He tried to get more. He pouted and threw a tantrum when Marcella told him that he had enough. He was fun to watch.
In the evening, she decided to take him out on a stroll. He didn’t like staying in the house the whole day. He would sleep better when he gets some outside air. They went to the park nearby and Joey enjoyed the time there. She thought he might fall asleep but he got excited to be there with other kids.
Marcella thought it was for the best. If he didn’t nap in the evening, he would fall asleep early in the night and usually he would sleep till morning. It would be for her best.
Their wedding happened in an unfortunate circumstance. She wanted to celebrate their first anniversary like she would have celebrated her wedding. Married life was good for her and she wanted to thank her husband who gave her everything.
Tony said that he would be home around five. She brought Joey back home as she wanted to change and doll up for him. She wanted to wear the same dress she wore to their wedding ceremony. She wanted to enjoy the night.
When she entered their house, Mary came out rushing. Marcella handed over Joey to her. "Keep him engaged. Please, do not let him fall asleep before dinner," she asked in a begging tone.
Mary winked understanding what Marcella meant. But then her eyes turned serious. "You have a guest, Mrs. Crawford," she said.
"Guest?" Marcella entered the house.
In the living room was her guest. Seeing Marcella, Beth stood up and walked to her with her arms stretched. "Mars!!"
"Beth!!" Marcella hugged her. She hadn’t forgotten her husband’s request.
But what could she do when Beth came to her house unannounced? Wouldn’t it be rude to send her out?
