Chapter 164: The Power Behind Her

Chapter 164: The Power Behind Her

Marcella nodded. She was sulking for a week and she tried to find out alternatives when she was a little rational. She had a feeling that Tony would listen to her if she told him another way.

She didn’t know whether he would take her suggestion as he did when she asked him to disperse the gang. But she decided to try.

"Paul didn’t contact you after the birthday party?" she asked.

"No, that woman called many times. I didn’t answer her. Stella said she left a message but I didn’t listen to it," Tony said.

Marcella could only sigh. That woman is his mother! But she understood why he called her "that woman". At least, he had no plans of killing her yet.

"You’re not going to ask me to talk to her, are you?" Tony asked seeing her reaction.

"No," Marcella shook her head. "I have a pretty good life without any in-laws. Why should I willingly bring trouble?" She winked.

Tony was not smiling. "I will never forgive her for making you cry, Birdie. I never will."

Marcella smiled. Yeah, Mrs. Murphy made her cry a lot of times. She was glad Tony decided to stand up for her. He must stand by her side. He was her husband.

"She made me cry a lot. She made my sister sneak up to meet with me. I don’t think it was all her decision..."

"Paul must have asked her to. He didn’t want you sisters getting along. He must have feared that you two would have made plans or realized something..." Tony took in a deep breath.

"Didn’t we think that Paul wanted Joey for the island? Did he bring it up again?" She asked.

Tony shook his head in the negative. "I was surprised too. But it is only the beginning. He surely will bring it up again."

"What happened to the threat to my life, Tony? If it was all Paul Romano, why is he quiet now?" Marcella asked.

She’s been moving around freely for months and she didn’t come across any troubles.

"Is he planning on something big?" she asked. She didn’t like that feeling.

"He looked like he gave up. But it could be a façade. Even when we had a meeting about letting him visit Joey, he seemed turned with everything. He talked as though he wanted to settle. He tried to make me believe that he was only willing to talk because his wife missed their grandson and he wanted to keep her happy. The whole meeting was weird. I thought he would try and talk to me about...but he didn’t."

"About what?" Marcella knitted his brows. He skipped that detail. He looked sad and Marcella thought about it. It was then it clicked her.

"He still doesn’t want to announce you as his son?" she asked.

She didn’t even realize that she was being blunt about a sensitive matter. Tony expected his father to acknowledge him but he didn’t even bring that up. No wonder Tony is still mad.

"I do not want him to do that. I would have refused him even if he asked me. It would only cause me trouble," Tony said avoiding eye contact with her.

"I know," she said. She could see that he was a little sad. "But why?" she asked.

Paul lost his only son—the heir. Now, he just wants visitation rights with his grandson. She didn’t know whether it was a plan or he just gave up. He never had plans to acknowledge Tony.

Why would a man allow this? Wouldn’t everyone want someone to follow their legacy?

"Andrew Mellon," Marcella said. "Do you think Paul considers him his protegee now?"

Tony shrugged. Marcella thought she would see disappointment on his face but he was fairly over the sadness. Marcella could see that he was not that interested in his father. Maybe it was not his heart that yearned for Paul’s acknowledgment but his pride. Tony might find it a slight that his biological father still didn’t want to acknowledge him.

"I am glad Paul didn’t acknowledge you, Tony," she held his hand.

Tony looked at her, tilting his head.

"I would have lost out without knowing you if that were the case," she held his hand. She meant every word of it. If Paul had acknowledged him, Tony never would have arrived at their house and she wouldn’t have fallen in love with him.

"Now it’s his loss," she added.

Tony chuckled and pulled her into a hug. "I would have found you no matter what, Birdie," he kissed her head.

He was not happy she was trying to put a blockade on a plan he made. But talking to her had given him a new perspective. She was right. How is Paul strutting around happily without having an heir to pass on his legacy to? That was so not him.

She decided to investigate him. He had a feeling that he wouldn’t be the only bastard of Paul Romano. There should be bound to be one or two.

And if that were the case, then he could relax. Paul would be busy forming a relationship with that guy and grooming him to be his perfect son. There is a possibility that Paul would forget about them.

But he didn’t think that she would have been okay with such a flimsy detail.

"You still haven’t told me what you’ve planned, Birdie," he asked.

"That..." Marcella sat facing him. "Did you find out why Daniel Schmidt was scared of me?" she asked.

’I couldn’t," Tony shook his head. Even he was surprised that there was no clues around. It only showed how powerful that person’s authority was.

"Do you think that person might be the reason I have no threats around me?" she asked.

"Possible," Tony nodded.

Everything around her had quieted down. That day she was pursued relentlessly but it was as if she became a regular person after that issue with Daniel Schmidt.

"I’ll see who else was there in the restaurant that day," Tony said.

Marcella nodded. "You know what that means, Tony," she held his hand. "You won’t have to kill your father to protect me. Someone bigger than Daniel Schmidt is having an eye on me."

Tony stared at her.

Should he be relieved realizing this, or should he be scared?

What kind of eye is watching my wife?

Is he watching over or ...?
