Chapter 137: His Motive

The moment Commissioner Logan stepped out; the people surrounded him as they wanted to convey their requests. The cops around him tried to protect the commissioner as they thought his life might be in danger as the mob surrounded him.

Marcella stepped forward once again. She didn’t want the people to get harmed. A group of people gathered for a cause is a good thing but it was easy to bring chaos into the mix.

"Let’s have Debby talk to the Commissioner," Marcella took the lead.

The crowd retreated but they still were chanting behind them as they walked inside the police precinct. Just as they got in, the officers who worked under the sheriff started to complain about Marcella. They wanted to ask for the riot squad and dismiss the pricky crowd who didn’t know what was better for them. They even talked about firing their guns at the crowd to disperse them.

Marcella rolled her eyes. She saw Debby was scared; she didn’t want others to get hurt because of her. Marcella consoled her.

"It’s not going to happen, Debby," Marcella assured her. "They wouldn’t want a nationwide riot in their hands."

Although the stupid cops might suggest it without thinking, with the national papers and news organizations here, it would be hard to pull off that stunt. But it was not impossible. Marcella wanted to avoid that.

Logan talked to Debby for some time. He asked her to get treatment first before

Commissioner Logan waved at Marcella to talk to him inside the room. Marcella looked at Debby. She looked uncomfortable, not wanting to be alone with those two cops. Marcella too felt like leaving Debby wouldn’t be a good idea. Those cops would definitely try to threaten her.

"We can talk here itself," Marcella told Logan.

Logan was not pleased and he let it known with a grunt. He took in a deep breath.

"I asked you one thing and you... Are you trying to shake me down, Miss DeAngelo?" he said after staring at her for a few seconds.

Marcella laughed. The politics this guy tried to play was astonishing. Minding Debby’s presence he was accusing her of making a back-handed deal with him and proceeded to backstab him. By mentioning her father’s name, he tries to remind everyone that she would be like her father.

Shaking him down, really? How nasty of him to suggest that she was blackmailing him for money by using the common people? She was not a politician or a cop! She was also not her father. Her father probably would have done that. He thought that any means was right for the greater good. For him the greater good included increasing his wealth too.

But what happened to Logan?

Marcella wondered what happened to the good guy who wanted to do help the directionless youth.

"Shake you down?" she scoffed. "How much can I get from you? Did you save a lot from your government salary? Or did you...manage to pocket a lot... You know..." She stopped seeing Logan’s face twitching. He was offended by her suggestion that he took bribes.

She knew a little about him. He was not big on getting bribes. Sometimes he accepted money because that was the only way to save himself and his family. She realized that he was stressed with this becoming national news. He just has little time left before he retires and he wouldn’t want to leave with this black mark attached to him.

It was not about burying it. It was about keeping his record clean.

"I am sorry," Marcella rubbed her forehead. "You asked for my help. I am doing what I see fit. I wanted to let you know~"

"You called the national papers, Bambi. That’s not helping me at all!" Logan slammed the table. "Are you thinking this would force my hand? That you could force my hand by pushing me? I can turn this anyway I want to if I want to!"

Debby let out a short shriek as she was scared by the sudden outburst of Logan. Marcella patted Debby.

"And what way would that be?" Marcella asked. She didn’t shout or scream. She didn’t want to make Debby any more nervous.

Logan too was ashamed of himself as he took a good look at Debby. Marcella saw the compassion on Logan’s face when he looked at Debby. He was feeling bad for her.

He jerked his head and looked at Marcella. "I can see this is a big issue. We can suspend the sheriff with loss of pay. He won’t ever step one foot inside the county. He will be demoted and transferred to the South. We can transfer the two officers too. I cannot do any more than that."

"Do you have children, Commissioner?" Marcella asked. She was not happy with what the commissioner suggested but it was a lot better than the deal the intern suggested.

"Tell me, commissioner. What will you do if someone did this to your daughter? Or your god daughter? Will you be okay with getting that man out of the county she lives or would you want him to lose everything and send him to prison?"

Logan shook his head out of disappointment. "I thought you were like your father, Bambi. I really thought you could... I was wrong to~"

"I am not my father, Commissioner. You keep on forgetting that," Marcella said. ’You knew, didn’t you, commissioner?" she leaned on the table. "You knew what was going on here and like a coward you came to me thinking I would take care of it like my father did in the past," she scoffed.

She now understood clearly. Her father would have killed and buried the cops here and then the commissioner could have closed the case after arresting a man or two. The community would be safe from cops like them and the police department wouldn’t have faced any blame as "thugs" killed sops on duty. It would have garnered more sympathy for the cops.

Was this how things got handled here in the past? And he expected me to kill those cops? He even brought up Tony’s father all to rile me up to clean up this place like my father did.

Marcella didn’t know what to think.

She knew this is how most people looked at her. But she was sure she would change that image. She will succeed in that.
