Chapter 134: The Savior

Marcella said nothing to the women as the women were so enthusiastic to show her something. She just followed them.

She wondered who Gina was and what it had to do with anything.

They took Marcella on a long walk to this street. Marcella was not used to this street. It looked like an extension of the old Olive Groove. It looked like a typical suburb—three- and four-bedroom houses with a front and back yard, sidewalks, trees, kids playing on the streets, etc.

"I want you to meet Debby," Beatrice said. "There... that one with the red door is~"

As Beatrice was speaking, that red door burst open. That was followed by the loud shout of a woman asking for help. There she had the answer to the question she asked earlier. She had found the sheriff. He was the one manhandling the petite woman who looked no more than twenty years of age.

Marcella noticed the mothers calling their kids inside and within a few seconds, the windows and doors of every house around closed.

The sheriff dragged Debby by the hair and threw her on the driveway. Debby curled into a fetal position. "Get up!" The sheriff shouted and Debby covered her face with her forearms and shook her head.

"I am not going with you..." she mumbled. Her hands were trembling as she knew what would follow after her refusal.

Marcella rushed forward when Beatrice stopped her.

"He’s an animal, Bambi! He would kill you...Debby is his Gina’s sister. Gina is-was his wife. He killed his wife and now wants to take her sister... Please, get help for her, Bambi..." Beatrice begged.

Marcella pressed her lips. She didn’t know what to do. She could understand what happened here. This power-tripping sheriff is terrorizing this woman using his title. He thinks he is the don around here. He probably has connections. No one would touch him because of his title.

As they were hiding behind the tree, she heard thumping noises. She peeked out to see the sheriff kicking the woman on the ground. She was shaking. She couldn’t even scream as she was getting kicked in the chest and face.

Marcella didn’t know what got to her. She looked around. There was nothing in there. She searched in her purse. She had her little "peashooter" gun but she didn’t think using it on a sheriff would be wise. She picked up her housekey and folded it in between her fingers.

"No!" Beatrice pulled Marcella’s hand. "It’s dangerous."

"I told you not to involve Bambina in this. Now look~" Naomi stopped seeing Marcella’s glare. She mumbled something and closing her mouth, she took a step back.

"Are you going to watch him beat a woman like a dog?" Marcella asked them both.

They were too stunned to say anything.

"Don..." Naomi mumbled and pulled Beatrice’s shirt.

Marcella let out a sigh and walked to the sheriff. He was intoxicated and she could smell him from a distance.

"Do you have fun hitting women?" she asked.

"Uh...?" the sheriff stumbled to look in her direction.

Before he could figure out anything, Marcella punched him in the face. The key she hid in between her fingers sank in his cheek, drawing blood.

"Try hitting me, mongrel!" she gritted her teeth.

The sheriff stumbled back. He was too intoxicated; it took him almost a minute to register what happened there. He touched his bleeding cheek and gritted his teeth.

While the sheriff was reorganizing, Marcella helped Debby up. Debby’s face had swelled and her lips were bleeding. Her cheekbones were bruised and her hair was a mess. Marcella’s heart melted for that girl.

Debby looked at her with misty eyes. Marcella quickly hid Debby behind her. She feared Debby might die if she get hit more by that animal.

While this was happening, the journalists who were recording everything stopped hiding and started to take pictures out in the open. Marella saw one of the cars rushing out. She had a feeling it was one of Randy’s men.

Help is coming!

Only when the sheriff raised his fists at her did Marcella started to get afraid. By some blind courage, she came here and hit that guy. Now he was enraged. She didn’t know how long she could hold him back.

Marcella kicked in his shin as hard as she could while punching him again. The sheriff couldn’t stand and he knelt on the ground. But he didn’t stay down.

"How dare a woman raise his hand at me!"

He shouted like a beast. Marcella’s heart trembled. She was scared, she wouldn’t lie. But her survival instinct kicked in and she remembered all the tactics she learned in the past. This guy was intoxicated and that was the only benefit she had. She needed to keep him down until help arrived.

I cannot let myself get hurt by this animal!

"Stay down, b@stard!" She punched the guy once more.

Her hands hurt although she alternated her hands while hitting him. She was not a street fighter. She hadn’t trained for years. Her body was not as strong as it used to be. But she didn’t give up. She kicked him a couple more times.

He was down on the grass—face down.

Using that chance, she turned to Debby to help her up. Debby was still shaking and she decided to bring her inside the house first to make her feel safe.

Naomi and Beatrice were still hiding behind the tree. They were shaking. Beatrice suppressed her sobs. She wanted Bambi to get the help of her father’s men to help the community, but she didn’t think that Bambi would do it herself. She feared that she had put Bambi in danger.

What can she do other than cry?

"She’s just like Don," Naomi said.

Beatrice looked at Naomi and was surprised to see the clarity on Naomi’s face. She was not afraid anymore.

The sheriff tried to get to his walkie-talkie to call for backup.

Naomi saw it first. Her eyes ended up on Marcella who was trying to bring Debby inside the house. Debby couldn’t even move a bit and it was hard for Marcella to drag her inside.

"Where are you going?" Beatrice held Naomi’s hand.

"To help her!" Naomi said. "You go stop him." She pointed at the sheriff.
