Chapter 133: The Visit
Chapter 133: The Visit
Marcella woke up in the middle of the night hearing Joey cry. Before she got up, Tony got to Joey surprising Marcella. She was surprised he hadn’t fallen asleep yet.
"Sleep," he said picking up Joey.
Marcella smiled. They had a dim night lamp in the room and his smile painted a divine contour on his face. He gently rocked the baby as he walked out to the kitchen. Marcella felt like heaven had descended into their tiny little home.
The bedroom door was open and she could hear Tony speaking softly to the baby. She heard the sound of the utensils as he prepared the formula. She didn’t know why, but hearing it made her happy. Before she knew it, she fell back asleep.
In the morning she didn’t have to do much and she did some research and learned that the arrival of first responders required the cops to accompany them. So if the cops aren’t allowed inside, the first responders may refuse to respond in case of emergencies citing that their lives are in danger without the cops.
It is serious as Logan mentioned!
She called Tony as she wanted to inform him that she was going to Olive Groove to check the situation there. She had no obligation to follow it through. But she was curious. She just wanted to check out the situation there.
Even she had not realized that she was already halfway through the girl she once was. She could have delegated. She has hundreds of men who would do her bidding without asking a question. The leadership quality she had kept buried for a decade, sprouted out, thanks to Tony watering her with confidence.
Tony was not in the office. Stella informed her that Tony had gone out to meet someone. Marcella asked Stella to pass her message to Tony. Picking up the sleeping baby, she went to Olive Groove.
Leaving Joey in Randy’s house, she decided to take a walk. Randy came rushing home after his wife informed him of her plan. She didn’t want to take Randy with her because then everyone would recognize her as Don DeAngelo’s daughter.
Randy did not let her walk alone. He sent some of the journalists who work with him to follow her at a distance. A couple of Randy’s neighbors joined her. Marcella appreciated it as she now had guides to look around the area.
From those women, Marcella learned that there was indeed a no-go zone in Olive Groove. Some anti-social people got access to an old apartment building in North Olive Groove and turned it into their lair after the death of Don DeAngelo. Since there was no leadership in the area, that building became theirs and they started using it for illegal activities and started terrorizing the people living in the building and around it.
Drugs, prostitution, trafficking, arms dealing—everything was going on there.
Marcella asked why the others hadn’t sought the help of the cops, although she knew the answer. Those who occupied that building must be paying off the cops. There was no way the cops weren’t involved in this.
Does Logan not know about it? Or did he try to rile me up so I could deal with them?
"Come with me," Beatrice, one of Randy’s neighbors brought Marcella through a series of alleyways and took her to North Market Street.
Marcella could recognize that place. She used to come here with her father in the past. This used to be her father’s turf. For them, the South Market Street was closer and her mother and others shopped there. So, Marcella used to get excited to come here for shopping because it would look brighter with beautiful colors all around. She loved the ice cream in the corner shop there. The old man in the shop would always give her three scoops of ice cream for free.
She looked around and the place, although had the same buildings, looked unrecognizable. It was run-down, unclean, and infested with vermin—like the inner city she got used to. She even saw a couple of guys selling drugs in the alleyway.
"What happened here?" Marcella mumbled. She was affected seeing the state of the place. She had so many good memories of this place and for it to have changed this much... It was sad.
Bernice pointed at the patrol car parked to the side. Marcella wondered why Logan thought that cops couldn’t get in there when they were standing there in broad daylight with no problem. She observed those cops. They were teasing and wolf-whistling at the women who were there shopping. Even mothers with their babies weren’t spared from their lecherous looks and touches. They were a menace to everyone there, except for the guys who were selling drugs right in front of their eyes.
Marcella fisted her hands.
Did the commissioner seriously have no idea about this? Absurd!
She gestured for the journalists who were following her to take pictures. They were not keen on doing so, but one of them took the courage and sneaked in to take some pictures.
Even Marcella didn’t know that she had already started to act in order to help the people there. To see what once was a bright and cheery place relegated to a dark vermin-infested place pushed her to act. She didn’t even have to think twice. It was something that she had in her blood.
"If they are here, where is the Sherrif?" Marcella asked.
Beatrice held her hand. Naomi, the other woman shushed her. Marcella noticed one of the officers staring at them.
"We should leave," Naomi pulled Marcella.
Marcella left the place after sparing a glance at the cops once more. "Beatrice, where is the Sherriff?" she asked. Naomi was scared as she could see but Beatrice looked like she wanted to say more.
"We don’t have to," Naomi told Beatrice as Beatrice had decided to do something dangerous.
"How long are we going to live in terror?" Beatrice asked. "She is back. Bambi is back. Don is watching over her. We shouldn’t be silent anymore, Naomi. You know what happened to Gina. We cannot wait for..." Her throat closed as she choked with emotions.
Marcella’s heart skipped a beat.
What are these women talking about? Why are they escalating me to a hero? I just want to have a look! That’s it!
