Chapter 130: The Shootout

After the party, Marcella and Tony returned home with Joey. Rather than leaving him at home with the babysitter, they decided to have him with them. Rosy was delighted to be reunited with Joey.

Some wanted to meet Joey. Marcella showed Joey to her father’s friends who were excited to meet his grandson. Joey too was excited seeing so many new faces that night. It was well past his bedtime but he had a good time meeting new people and getting cooed at.

Louis Fletcher came to the party really late. Marcella talked to him for some time. Rudolf Hemmingway came to the party with his girlfriend. She looked like a nice person and Marcella didn’t know whether that woman knew Rudolf’s preferences. She wondered if she should talk about it to her or if she should leave it for her to figure out.

Tony understood her dilemma and asked her not to interfere in the lives of other people. Marcella found that would be preferable as it is the easy route. Well, it should have been easy to ignore other people’s business but she found it hard to not speak about Ralph’s affiliations to his date.

But Tony is right. It’s not her business and she didn’t want to poke her nose into someone else’s personal life.

John Emerson stayed until the end. Some of his colleagues joined later too. Marcella had invited them. They stayed until the party was finished. She got close to them. If they weren’t trying to get her husband arrested, she would call them her friends. Marcella introduced Tony to everyone.

John Emerson wanted to hold Joey. Marcella let him. He looked emotional as he held Joey. Marcella could see that he loved her sister very much. She didn’t understand why her father didn’t let him date her sister. She felt sorry for John.

John mentioned that the commissioner of police wanted to talk to her. Marcella didn’t know what that was about as he didn’t tell her the details. He said that he wanted her help though.

Marcella was too happy to worry about what the commissioner might want.

As they were leaving, the agents followed them. Tony looked fidgety and only then Marcella noticed that John Emerson was not staying because he was enjoying the party too much.

Something is wrong...

Marcella hugged Joey to her chest as Tony covered her. She pulled his sleeve to pull him back but he glared at her and asked her to hide behind him. The car they had arranged for them stopped at the door. There was slow traffic on the road and everything looked normal at first.

But just as Marcella stepped forward to get inside the car, bullets started blasting at her. Tony immediately pulled her down.

"Hide!" he shouted before starting to shoot. The agents joined them too announcing that they were the FBI.

Marcella complied.

The shooting didn’t go on for long. A car zoomed out and after that, the shooting stopped.

The agents checked on Marcella. She was not all that disturbed. This was part and parcel of her daily life considering who she was. A little shootout was not going to faze her. She did worry a little for Joey though but she knew Tony wouldn’t let any harm befall the little one. Also, her dress got dirty. It’s fine. It was just dirt. She can get it cleaned.

"It’s definitely Andrew Mellon and Paul Romano," Tony said.

John Emerson pretended he didn’t hear that. But Marcella had a feeling that he wouldn’t leave it at that. Whether he did something officially didn’t matter. But he would know that Paul Romano had a hand in it and that would be helpful in the future.

The agents were surprised to see how calm she was. John Emerson was not that surprised. Tony rubbed her back and kissed her forehead. "You’re not hurt anywhere, are you?" he asked.

’No," she said and then he proceeded to check the driver of the car.

The driver was hurt in the arm. The shootout definitely garnered the attention of the people around. But they dusted it off and went on their way. The cops were called and the ambulance arrived. Marcella waited with Tony as he handled everything.

When they left for home, it was already late.

"Can’t you stop him?" Marcella asked.

Tony looked at her. There was a lot of guilt and a little disappointment on his face.

"I get it," she held his hand. "I know you are trying. I didn’t think he had gained so much influence," she said.

To attack her in the presence of FBI agents needs some serious balls. How come Paul Romano has it?

"Mark Paulo is his greatest strength," Tony said. "Some of your father’s allies support Paul thinking they are on Don’s side. But..."

Marcella leaned on his shoulder. Paul is a veteran in this field but Tony has just made his entry. It would be unfair of her to expect Tony to handle Paul easily.

Mark Paulo and Paul are snakes. Too bad her father couldn’t see through them while he was alive.

The renovation work at Marcella’s family home was finished and they fixed the date to move there.

Tony came home late each day and although he didn’t explain, Marcella could see that he was busy handling the attacks against the Congressman. Someone wanted the Congressman gone.

Randy’s newspaper--The Daily Herald--broke the news of the affair between the famous actress and the married producer. The pictures and the detailed phone logs couldn’t be refuted. In just a matter of weeks, the actress fell from grace.

The unfair thing was the producer issued an apology and along with his wife’s heart-pulling letter to the public to forgive her husband, the producer was over the scandal easily.

The actress, however, faced a lot of vitriol. One time, she was slapped by a bunch of women who recognized her shopping in a grocery store.

The actress had to leave the city. No one came to her support and she was thrown away as garbage.

After the publishing of the article, The Daily Herold gained a lot of notoriety. Randy kept on publishing all gossip pieces while also writing about the incidents happening in the city.

The shootout at their wedding party did get a mention too pushing for the police to take action. The police did arrest some low level thugs who were obviously scapegoats and it went nowhere after that.
