Chapter 118: His Business Side
Chapter 118: His Business Side
When Marcella got dressed and went out, Tony was ready with the breakfast. It was toast and eggs. But it was filling as he squeezed fresh orange juice for her.
Last night, she told Tony that she had executed her plans and Randy would inform everyone of her plans. Tony hummed and said nothing else. It was obvious that he still was not very accepting of her plan. She didn’t think that he would go behind her back and do anything else though. He too agreed that they had no other way.
He told her that Mclaughlin offered to be their muscle in exchange for access to that island. Mclaughlin probably offered a cut too. She didn’t care about the fine details of the deal they made. She didn’t care.
She was grieving. Her father would not be proud that she’s opening up their place for drug trafficking. But she needs to protect her family. She only has a few of her family left. She cannot lose them too.
"I’ll ask Uncle Karl if we can sell that island," she said.
"To a proxy?" Tony asked. He figured that would be the best way to have their cake and eat it. They wouldn’t have to worry if they’d be implicated if someone got caught.
"Yeah..." Marcella let out a deep breath. "You’re not running the next cycle, are you?" she asked.
"No, we’ll have to lay low for a while and see how everything progresses," Tony said.
Marcella found that to be a better idea. She decided to not worry about anything anymore. She hoped that Tony would stay safe and the rest, he will take care of it.
She saw how suave and heroic he was when he managed to have an upper hand on Mclaughlin the previous day. She never thought that Tony was planning ahead and had people watching them in case they needed them.
What if Tony doesn’t hand over everyone to Mclaughlin? He knows what he is doing.
"Did you give your contact details to Mr. Yamaguchi?" Marcella asked. It didn’t appear that he did. She didn’t understand why he avoided making that connection.
"He gave me his," Tony shrugged. "The Takeda family—his wife’s family is said to have been a descendent of the Imperial family. They’ve always held power in their country. But recently, they are not doing very well as people want something new and are walking away from the old noble families. They are wanting one of theirs in places of power. Also, his family name is pretty famous among the people and they are not impressed."
Marcella understood what he meant. He is saying that Mr. Yamaguchi needs him more than Tony needs Mr. Yamaguchi. If the Takeda family wants to have a chance in the next election, they will have to do something big. They might be eyeing a deal with their country that would be crucial for their political standing.
It might be right, but...
"Wouldn’t he find someone else if you are cocky?" Marcella asked.
Tony smirked. "Marcella, dear," he patted her cheek. "Cockiness is part of the game!" he winked. "No one likes or respects a "Yes" man. Everyone wants the alpha and the alpha is not someone who gives out audiences to everyone. Also... who else is he going to find?"
Tony then collected her plate and walked to the sink. Marcella watched him with her hand on her cheek. She couldn’t help but smile. It appears that his world is different. What would she know about it?
Tony is right. There aren’t many who would understand the underhanded dealings and keep the honor of their word in this country. The politicians never keep their word. Having a mediator wouldn’t work well when Tony would be available without a middleman.
Tony would be the perfect man. Mr. Yamaguchi knew it and that was the reason he made the first move.
He was polite with Mr. Yamaguchi. Maybe they can make a good deal. If Tony could manage to form an alliance with another country, his status in the political sphere would improve too.
Marcella hoped it worked out in the end.
Marcella took a rest in the afternoon. Tony lived up to his words and didn’t let her do anything. He even did the weekend laundry. She didn’t know how he did it as he didn’t let her anywhere near him. She hoped he at least separated the whites and the colors.
In the evening, they went out for a walk in the park with Joey. While at it, they also checked some cakes for their wedding party. After having dinner in an Italian restaurant, they returned home.
Marcella was tired and since she had nothing else to do. Tony was writing the speech. He had a lot to cross reference and he had to do a lot of fact-checking.
Marcella couldn’t believe the work that went into a single speech a congressman gave. Too bad the work is not put forth by the congressman himself. It’s his people who are working hard. And the congressman would get praised if his execution of the speech was good.
It’s unfair. But life is unfair, right?
She watched Tony for some time and before she knew it, she fell asleep. The next day, she woke up in the gentle embrace of Tony. It was as if he was trying hard not to squish her.
It brought a smile to her face.
That day too, she just rolled around in bed and occasionally took care of Joey. As he promised, Tony did most of the work around the house. He went out in the morning and when he returned, he came back with a vacuum cleaner—the latest kind.
"It must have cost an arm and a leg!"
Marcella exclaimed seeing the vacuum.
"It makes everything easy. See..." Tony went on to clean the house while explaining everything to her.
"Okay, it makes everything easy," Marcella agreed. "But..."
"Is it the noise?" Tony asked. "It does make a lot of noise. But we can get used to it..."
Marcella was about to ask him something but he turned on the machine and started working.
She worried about the cost. Is it okay that he went out and came back with a vacuum cleaner? Did he apply for a loan or got into a debt?
Come to think of it, she still isn’t sure of his financials. She doesn’t even know his salary.
That’s not good, right? She should know the answer to that question, right?
"Tony, how much do you earn per month?" she asked.
Her father used to say—You cannot ask a woman her age and a man his salary. Maybe Tony wouldn’t want to answer her. She hoped he would answer her though.
"Come here," he called her.
Marcella leaned to his mouth, overwhelmed with curiosity.
