Flash Marriage: Shrewd Wife, Devious Husband -
Chapter 115: The Truth
Chapter 115: The Truth
Marcella lunged at Mclaughlin. He was sitting there without moving.
Tony placed his hand on her shoulder. Marcella stopped immediately and went back to her seat. Tony came back to his seat.
The entire place went silent.
Tony took a cigar from his pocket and lit it. The sound of the fire catching on the matchstick reverberated in the container. Everything was that silent.
Tony at first didn’t realize why she thought that Mclaughlin was responsible for her sister’s death. But the last thing she mentioned was the island and he thought that she must have imagined that Mclaughlin killed Mellissa to gain access to the island through Marcella.
But Tony had a feeling that the truth must be different. Whatever Mellissa’s feelings were about loaning the island’s docks for the international gangs, Andrew would have made her agree to it.
To be honest, that is the wisest choice. They cannot go against all those gangs that are united. The best way moving forward would be to accept their request and make a deal that would be beneficial for them. Marcella would agree to it too. She got emotional thinking that the island played a role in her sister’s death.
Her sister’s death is indeed a sore spot; so is her father’s death.
Tony squeezed her hand. She cannot let her emotions control her. This is not a place where she can allow her emotions to rule. She should be solely rational here.
Marcella looked at him. The scent of the cigar whiffed around her, taking her back to her childhood days when she’d go to meetings like this with her father. She closed her eyes and took a deep breath.
I was wrong to lose my composure!
She had seen how her father kept on his poker face throughout the meeting and never relented unless he got what he wanted. He never bargained. He got what he wanted.
This is a business meeting and she cannot be getting emotional here. She will lose her respect if she acts like a little girl. She is here representing her father.
I need to hold myself together.
She opened her eyes and looked at Tony. He passed his lit cigar to her. She got it and took a puff before returning it to him. She’s not fond of smoking although she was used to smoking. The nicotine hit her almost immediately, stimulating her.
"I do not own the Island. You know, don’t you?" she asked Mclaughlin.
"It belongs to his firstborn grandson. I know," Mclaughlin said.
Tony took a puff looking at Mclaughlin. He didn’t get to the details of her will but it was news to him. If that was Don’s will, Joey would be the owner of that island.
So, Don was protecting both his daughters. He knew that his daughters would protect each other. That makes sense.
Since Joey is the owner of the Island and he is underage, the responsibility lies with Marcella to take care of that property. In that case...
Tony almost dropped the cigar in his hand.
"Paul Romano," he mumbled.
Marcella’s heart skipped a beat. She looked at Tony and he held her hand tightly.
Paul Romano didn’t kill Mellissa for the CODEX. He killed her for the island. It is for the island, Paul wants Joey.
Oh, hell!
"You figured it out now?" Mclaughlin asked.
Marcella wetted her lips and leaned back on the chair.
"We had a meeting like this with Missy and her husband. They agreed to our deals. But everything went sideways out of nowhere. Your sister backed off the deal for some reason. Someone else interfered as they wanted the Greeks to have the Island. That person had the triads’ help too. He’s not just a low-level man from what I investigated," Mclaughlin said.
Marcella’s eyes misted. She held back her tears.
Mclaughlin won’t touch Paul Romano. Paul Romano has connections with many higher-ups in the police force and the FBI. If Mclaughlin causes a scene, he will have to pay for it either with his life and business or he will have to bribe a lot to be free. He will not risk his business.
He is a sneaky scoundrel for not doing anything and telling her all this. He bets on riling her up and taking advantage of her emotional state to have access to that Island.
"What do we get in return?" Marcella asked.
"Now we are talking," Mclaughlin rubbed his hands together. "I heard your husband has political aspirations. It’s not feasible to have his little gang of pirates rushing around... How about, I take them in?"
Tony scoffed. "We should give access to our island and our men? How does that benefit us? For all we know, you killed Mellissa because she didn’t want you to sneak drugs into the country using her island. We all know what Don DeAngelo felt about drugs!"
"Drugs?" Marcella mumbled looking at Tony.
Her father never got in the business of drugs no matter how high the pay was. He didn’t want his people to be ruined by the drugs he brought onto the streets. She understood why Mellissa pulled back from the deal.
Her father will roll in his grave if his children help peddle drugs.
Marcella almost stood up. If it was about drugs, she didn’t want to continue this meeting.
Tony was not sure if it was drugs but Mclaughlin’s silence gave him the confirmation. He heard somewhere that one of the prominent opium producers from the East had given an open challenge to sell his Class-A drugs to the first one who found a proper route to their nation.
So, that’s what the two groups are fighting for. Mclaughlin and the Yakuza want to get a route through Olympus Island and so do Thevis and the Triads.
And that’s why both groups are targeting Marcella.
He did not care about that. If the gangs care that much about the island, that’s no good.
Who will get the island if Marcella, he, and Joey die?
It probably will end up with their close relative or the government. None of that would be good for it would be easier for the gangs to buy that island.
Tony understood why Andrew agreed to the deal. He has to agree to the deal to protect everyone. They don’t have much of a choice here.
"He knew what I felt about drugs and yet he left the harbor to me!" Mclaughlin said.
"So you say," Marcella said.
What proof does she have that her father handed over the harbor to Mclaughlin? Well, she has a proof. There was no war that she remembered of. If her father didn’t want Mclaughlin to take over the harbor, he would have told someone about it and there would have been a war for the turfs. But there was none as far as she recalled.
"Bambina, your father was a wise man to learn to get along with others. He learned that was the way to move forward. You’re wise too. Think about it. I guarantee you peace of mind. I will be your go-to servant for all of your needs. Need to thrash your opponent’s campaign office? I’ll be your guy. Need to threaten your opponent? I’ll be your guy. Need to wash your money? I’ll be your guy! Your husband will rise up...President Crawford! I’ll be your bodyguard behind the scenes obliterating everyone against you~"
"Just like you did with Mellissa?" Marcella scoffed and stood up.
"I told you that’s... Hey! Sit down, let’s discuss it, Bambina DeAngelo!" Mclaughlin jerked his head at Rudolph to do something.
"I’m Marcella Crawford; Mrs. Marcella Crawford." Marcella let out a deep breath. "I’ll be outside. Speak with my husband," she said.
Mclaughlin rubbed his knees. He looked convinced. Marcella walked out. She needed to think.
