Chapter 837: 820 Farewell
Chapter 837: Chapter 820 Farewell
After four or five days of continuous feeding, the relationship between Yue Feng and the little fox had become very stable.
Yue Feng and his online friends named the white fox “Da Bai”. As their bond grew stronger, Da Bai even trusted him enough to expose his soft belly for Yue Feng to pet. At night, the fox would disappear to some unknown place, but by daytime, he would come to the snow house to find Yue Feng for food.
Faced with this foodie pet, Yue Feng gradually put aside his usual animal training tactics of controlling food and became indulgent toward Da Bai.
“Xiao Bai” ate once a day, while Da Bai ate twice. When he arrived in the morning, he didn’t say anything—just offered a live fish to fill his stomach, and before dark left another portion for him.
Arctic foxes surviving in the wild only have such treatment when breastfeeding; ordinarily, they wouldn’t have such an opportunity. In less than a week, Da Bai was fattened up by Yue Feng, his once loose coat now faintly taut with an exceptional hand feel.
The challenge had unknowingly progressed to the fifty-fifth day. Yue Feng analyzed the information provided by online friends and judged that all three participants should be able to endure. The toughest, Indian Sister, after eating smoked fish, found early-stored roots from before the snowstorm, so the last few days shouldn’t be any problem.
Yet reality is always more exciting than expected. Number Six Sister didn’t have any issues; instead, it was Number Eight, Claude, who fell just before victory.
Each day, Claude ate heartily and drank to his fill, living in a relatively low log house. Although it was decent at keeping out the cold, the roof construction added a lot of lichen and soil to seal gaps against drafts.
After over fifty days of continuous fire, the simple stove inside the log house had completely dried out the wooden roof and lichen. During one midnight refueling, a stray spark accidentally ignited the lichen on the roof, quickly setting the wood ablaze.
Claude, startled awake by the flames, frantically tried to put out the fire, but to no avail. He could only watch as his dwelling turned to ashes under the howling north wind.
Had Claude been a bit more rational, this fire might not have thwarted his sixty-day challenge. He could have saved his sleeping bag, weapons, and other supplies. The log house could be rebuilt—abundant food and strength meant these challenges weren’t fatal for a strong young man.
Unfortunately, his misfortune was that he was overly focused on putting out the fire and didn’t think clearly enough. His sleeping bag was completely burned, his bow shattered by falling wood, and his fire-starting magnesium rod was lost. Entirely disheveled, his camp was a chaotic mess.
In the night’s freezing cold, below minus thirty degrees, without a sleeping bag, fire, weapons, or shelter, Claude, who had once been a hopeful contender, called the show’s team at dawn on the fifty-sixth point and quit the challenge!
Thus, of the ten challengers, only Yue Feng and Number Six Indian Sister remained.
Many people say that in the face of certain unknown difficulties, women often show remarkable tenacity. It’s worth mentioning that Number Six Indian Sister was such a person.
Her meat supplies were exhausted, so she could only barely get by on hot water and roots. Yet she didn’t give up easily but instead spent her boredom combing through previously stored rabbit skins one by one.
Dried rabbit skins had little fat or meat, but out of convenience, she hadn’t processed the short tails back then, simply cutting them off.
Now, these dozen or so rabbit tails became Number Six’s only food source. Reluctant to eat them, she cleaned them up and boiled them into soup, enduring to the sixtieth day with the rare flecks of oil and the few roots remaining.
On the sixtieth day of the challenge, Yue Feng rose early from his shelter as dawn broke.
Thinking of leaving this wretched place and returning to the warm and comfortable civilized world, Yue Feng couldn’t sleep the night before after he got up to add firewood.
He dragged out the smoked fish and bear meat stored in the cellar, sliced off a large chunk of unprocessed wolverine meat to feed Xiao Bai to the brim, and then sorted through all the equipment and materials brought along at the beginning.
Not known until checking, over two months, Yue Feng had amassed quite a collection.
A thick layer of rabbit skin, tanned black bear skin, porcupine skin, over thirty uneaten smoked fish, about a third of the bear meat left.
Yesterday evening, when ice fishing was over, Yue Feng brought these furs back to the shelter, where they would be inventoried by staff before leaving and then reported.
In addition, there were eagle perches made from pine mortise and tenon, roughly-made pottery jars, rough pottery bowls for holding food, hand-woven nets for catching eagles, rabbit leather sleeves for eagle training, and more spread across the open space outside the shelter.
Yue Feng opened the livestream to showcase these survival essentials one last time.
Checking the time, he saw it was over an hour until the agreed ten o’clock. Yue Feng skipped lunch, grabbed two of the largest smoked fish, and took bold strides toward the center of the lake with Xiao Bai.
He arrived at the snow house where he’d been ice-fishing for over ten days to see Da Bai wandering around the entrance from afar.
Seeing Yue Feng, Da Bai ran over, charmingly whining and whimpering as he reached him. Feeling conflicted, Yue Feng set the smoked fish he was holding onto the ground.
“Eat a bit more, I’m leaving today! You’ll have to take care of yourself from now on!” Yue Feng wasn’t sure if Da Bai could understand. Fondling Da Bai’s fur with one hand, he watched the little guy devour it ravenously.
Once Da Bai was full, the crew’s helicopter picking up Yue Feng flew over the camp from a distance.
Yue Feng glanced back one last time, then walked away with large strides.
When Yue Feng returned to the shelter, staff had arrived. Under the gaze of several cameras, they formally announced the results of this challenge and warmly shook hands with Yue Feng.
After inventorying all the supplies, it was time for Yue Feng to part with Xiao Bai. Under everyone’s watchful eyes, Yue Feng removed the eagle hat from Xiao Bai’s head.
Having never seen so many people before, Xiao Bai panicked instantly, stepping on Yue Feng’s arm and struggling persistently, letting out anxious calls that resembled a deadly threat.
Seeing this, Yue Feng put the hat back on. Then, the staff brought scissors and cut the two restraints on its legs, after which Yue Feng carried Xiao Bai several tens of meters away and removed the hat.
Now further away from strangers, Xiao Bai finally calmed down, adjusted to the light, loosened his fur, and seemed somewhat unaccustomed to the absence of the restraints on his legs.
For the last time, Yue Feng stroked Xiao Bai’s fur from head to toe and raised his arm against the breeze.
Not realizing it was a farewell, Xiao Bai thought it was just another ordinary training round, opened his wings, and took off vigorously. He followed Yue Feng’s previous training and soon soared into the sky, becoming just a small dot.
Yue Feng shaded his eyes and took one last look, solemnly muttering to himself, “The treasured moments of our time together, and those brilliant hunting memories are my precious mental wealth! Today, I’m leaving, and returning you to freedom!”
“You’ve learned the skills of hunting and gathering, and your physique is strong enough to survive in the harsh wilderness. Surely, next year you’ll claim a large territory, find a great mate, and raise a heap of offspring, passing on those excellent genes!”
“Farewell, my friend, until we meet again someday!!”
“Brothers, the sixty-day challenge is over. Thank you all for accompanying me for so long! I’m leaving, returning home to rest for a few days, but I’ll continue live streaming soon! Goodbye!”
The drone captured another close-up of Xiao Bai soaring through the blue sky, flapping his wings, before Yue Feng ended the stream, packed up his gear, and left without looking back, boarding the plane.
After being away for so long, it was time to go home!
