Chapter 803: Chapter 787 Preparation
Yue Feng explained: “The hang foot trap we set just now is for catching ptarmigans! Those are the birds that suddenly fly up, similar to wild chickens that we saw today! And cutting these thinner pine trees now is to weave a net back at the camp! For eagle trapping!”
“Oh my gosh? Brother Feng, you know how to weave a net too?”
“This is too amazing, right? You can weave nets too? I’m really curious, Brother Feng, is there anything you can’t do besides giving birth?”
“Wow, wow, the Indian sister on channel six is also busy weaving nets! But her new target is to weave nets for catching fish in the lake! And Brother Feng is even more impressive, planning to weave a net to catch that falcon?”
“After watching Brother Feng’s recent livestream, I no longer admire Bear Grylls or Les Stroud from abroad! Without a team, they can’t achieve those effects. Based solely on wilderness knowledge level, Brother Feng is definitely not inferior to those overly mythologized survival experts!”
As he spoke, Yue Feng picked a sapling about as thick as a child’s arm, easily chopped it down close to the ground, quickly cleared some branches, and dragged it away to continue searching!
After finding four pine poles of roughly the same thickness, Yue Feng turned and headed back to the camp!
“Brothers! The preparatory work is basically done. Next, before we weave the net, we need to make a small tool, a gauge, and a shuttle!
To capture such a large bird of prey, the net mesh needs to be big, so weaving the net is quite straightforward!”
Introducing while working, Yue Feng started cutting with his knife, and after about half an hour of work, he got a simple shuttle and a roughly fifteen-centimeter long simple wooden ruler!
“Okay, brothers, tools are ready, we can start weaving the net. There are many formal fishing net weaving methods, we’ll just use the simplest beginner’s method! My knotting method is quite fast, you guys might not understand it, but that’s okay, it’s not something you’d normally need, just see it as a curiosity!”
While explaining, Yue Feng wrapped the PE line around the wooden ruler, and after dozens of loops, he took it off in a hand gesture. He folded it at the top and tied a knot to hang it on the pine pole.
On the other end, the middle groove of the shuttle was wrapped with a lot of PE line. The shuttle flexibly passed through the first hole, measured the length with the wooden ruler, and tied a knot like a finger trick, completing the first mesh!
The principle is like knitting a sweater, one knot follows another, and the net’s outline quickly took shape!
However, this net is different from a conventional net, with particularly large meshes, exactly the length of the wooden ruler. With such large meshes, it’s easy to cover a person’s head.
In less than half an hour, a handmade net three meters long, two meters wide, and with mesh dimensions over 15 centimeters was woven!
With the help of the wooden ruler and shuttle, the net Yue Feng made was fairly standard in size, but it looked quite shabby! Such large holes, it could probably net a live human, completely unlike the usual fishing nets in people’s minds!
“Alright, brothers! The net is woven! How does it look? Still quite neat, right?” Yue Feng wiped the sweat off his forehead and said with a sense of accomplishment.
However, the viewers weren’t very impressed.
“Just this? With holes this big, you could probably fit a human head through, and use it to catch a falcon?”
“The weaving process seems quite systematic, but isn’t this net too sparse?”
“If this were a fishing net, it could probably only catch fish over thirty pounds! Brother Feng, did you make a mistake!”
Yue Feng laughed and shook his head: “No mistake! The net for catching eagles is different from the net for catching fish; the mesh size is different!”
As he spoke, Yue Feng tested the netting with his hands, checking the knots which were tight, and the material, which was high-strength PE line, absolutely no problem!
“With a net with such big meshes, how do you use it?”
“Question from above +1!”
“I want to know too!”
Yue Feng smiled with closed lips: “I’ll keep it a secret for now, you’ll see eventually! Weaving the net is just the first step, my plan for this eagle trapping project is a week! There’s still a lot of preparation work we’ll need to do! While there’s still daylight, let’s look around for a suitable place to set up our eagle trap!!”
…
Over the next two days, Yue Feng transformed into the same state as the African-American guy on channel eight when he first arrived, wandering around seemingly aimlessly but actually considering everything carefully.
On the first day, none of the four hang foot traps caught a ptarmigan!
On the second morning, luck was better, two traps were triggered, and they finally caught the bait for eagle trapping! What boosted Yue Feng’s confidence even more was spotting the falcon again while scouting in the afternoon!
The previous guess was correct, this area is within the territory of this falcon!
Encountering it twice in a short time, at least theoretically, there’s hope of catching it!
These past two days, Yue Feng has been roaming around, with the crucial goal of spotting this bird of prey again. Birds of prey can have a very large range of activity, often covering dozens or even hundreds of kilometers!
If it were just passing by once, rushing to set up traps would be like climbing a tree to catch a fish, completely misguided!
“Alright, brothers! The scouting phase is over, let’s go back to get the shovel, and start setting up the hunting ground!” Yue Feng excitedly greeted and returned to his place to gather his supplies: PE line, nets, pine poles, tool knife, shovel, logging axe, and headed straight for the area where they recently spotted the falcon again!
The “field” Yue Feng chose was a relatively flat area, virtually free of rocks and only having a few sparse low shrubs. Upon arrival, he marked the position simply with branches and got to work.
The shovel was used to dig a shallow rectangular pit, about half a meter deep, big enough for a person to lie in!
After the shallow pit was dug, he used pinewood and mixed underbrush, lichens, and other grass to make a camouflaged lid for the pit.
Once someone lies inside and covers the pit, from above, it blends perfectly with the surrounding environment.
After completing the camouflage of the pit, the most critical step of netting came next!
Yue Feng tied thin pine poles into a rectangular frame, stretched the net across its four sides, and used a supporting stick to prop it up diagonally behind it.
The bottom two corners were fixed to wooden stakes, and on the top frame, he tied a rope made of six strands of twisted PE line that extended into the nearby pit.
When the trap was set up, the viewers finally understood Yue Feng’s plan.
Heavens, he placed a live ptarmigan as bait on one side of the net. If the falcon dives in for an attack, he’ll pull the net and trap the falcon inside!
The majority of the materials used, like wood and pine branches, were commonly found in the wilderness, making the setup look inconspicuous. The masterstroke was Yue Feng’s handcrafted eagle net.
Because the net holes were so large, hanging it slantingly on the frame made it very inconspicuous, almost impossible for an inexperienced prey bird to notice.
With everything ready, all we needed was the right moment!
