Chapter 720: Chapter 707: Venting the Past Frustration

“Holy crap, how can such a thick fishing line get worn like this? Lucky for us, Brother Feng checked it in advance!”

“Damn, this line is almost as thick as a ballpoint pen refill. You could use it to tie up a cow back home, let alone fishing. A bit of fraying and wear should be okay, right?”

“I don’t care if the fishing line is fine or not, just seeing that shiny big hook scares me. Brother Feng, you’ve got to be extra careful and keep it safe!”

Yue Feng carefully sensed the speed at which the bait fish and the weight were sinking. Once the line stopped releasing, he slowly started to reel in, tightening the mainline.

“Fishing for giant groupers like we’re doing today, in this kind of special environment, requires some pretty exaggerated gear. Right now, we’re using 300-pound nylon for the mainline and a 240-pound carbon line for the leader!”

With such a heavy setup, even deep-sea fishing for a thousand-pound Tuna might be considered overkill, but for catching giant groupers, it’s still not safe!

What everyone just saw, the fraying caused by friction, might not seem severe, but it massively affects the tensile value. From my personal experience, with a tensile value of over two hundred pounds, this kind of minor wear can reduce it by at least half. We’re lucky that the fish just now was relatively small. Right now, we’re fishing in water that’s roughly forty meters deep, which means greater resistance after hooking a fish!”

While casually chit-chatting and sharing common knowledge, Yue Feng casually teased the fishing rod upwards, stirring the line and bait fish. Instead of waiting motionlessly for the fish to bite, movement in slightly darker areas increases the chances of the bait being attacked.

At this moment, if there were a camera angle from the bottom of the water, one would see a whole fresh fish emitting blood, moving erratically under Yue Feng’s teasing, spreading more of the bloody scent into the surrounding waters.

Just then, from under the bridge pier, a large fish poked its head out from a dark cave.

It was clear that the fish was very large, at least two sizes bigger than the first giant grouper caught. It’s unknown how long it had been living in this hideout, its massive head and the cave entrance were almost of the same thickness.

Compared to the other, more gluttonous and bold medium-sized giant groupers, this big fellow was much more cautious and sensitive. It seemed hesitant, carefully observing its surroundings before rushing out to swallow the bait, as it sensed the blood in the water.

At that moment, a nurse shark attracted by the spreading scent of blood, over one meter in length, swam toward the bait fish, propelled by its tail.

Feeling the approach of the shark, the big fish at the cave’s entrance reflexively retracted back into the cave.

The next second, while Yue Feng was teasing the line up and down, he suddenly felt a weight underneath the water, a fish had attacked the bait.

The change in water depth was evident in the feel of the rod after hooking a fish. The same size fish felt about thirty percent heavier when the water depth increased by more than ten meters. As he set the hook, Yue Feng thought he had hooked another giant grouper. But after a few pulls on the line, something felt off.

The direction of the force from the fish below was heading away, and its strength was intermittent. In comparison to the ferocity and brutality of the giant grouper, this fish was a bit underwhelming. Despite the initial similar feeling, Yue Feng clearly discerned the difference.

“Another bite? Holy crap, is the competition ending?”

“Ask the captain to call the judge? With this distance, it’ll take some time for them to get here, better to finish this quickly and decisively!”

“The society’s Brother Feng, a man of few words but decisive action, and just like that he’s handled the matter of the three fish, hasn’t he?”

“The giant groupers here in Miami are freaking numerous, watching Brother Feng fish is such a pleasure! Work hard, and someday when I have the money, I must come here and enjoy this before I die!”

While the public channel was abuzz discussing the fish, Yue Feng shook his head to the camera, “Brothers, it was a false alarm. Based on the fight, this fish isn’t likely a giant grouper, the feeling after it bit isn’t quite right!

This fish attacked the bait when I’d lifted it about eighty centimeters off the bottom. After biting, it started to flee into the distance. Anyway, currently no one has caught two fish, there’s still plenty of time, so let’s slow down and have a little fun with it!

I guess this is a shark. If we disregard its annoying habit of robbing baits and nearly no commercial value, sharks are really great for fishing—strong and exhilarating to fight! Using such a large heavy-duty reel to face it might be a bit of an overkill, but it still gives a pretty good sensation.”

Having confirmed it wasn’t a giant grouper, Yue Feng loosened the tension a bit. Very soon, the next rush came, and the slackening produced the delightful clicking sound.

Yue Feng was right, using a heavy rod and large reel for this gluttonous shark might indeed be overdoing it. The stout fishing rod that could’ve bent to the midsection with a giant grouper was now only symbolically bending at the tip. Yue Feng toyed with reeling in and letting out the line for a while, then easily pulled the fish out of the water.

Another nurse shark, about one meter eighty in length, roughly the same size as the previous one, but Yue Feng, accustomed to its exoskeletal power, handled it effortlessly, hardly out of breath as he pulled it up.

“Damn, it is a shark!”

“Could there be other sharks around, sensitive to blood in the water? Brother Feng, let’s not mess around, in case it jeopardizes our chance of winning!”

“What’s there to fear, you upstairs? Brother Feng is always steady when fishing. Using such thick lines and gear for sharks, Brother Feng is just venting his past sea frustrations!”

Whether intentional or not, venting on the shark was indeed part of the idea. The usual rods were softer, the reels smaller, and fighting a shark was inefficient and exhausting. But now, it was finally a chance to release some pent-up energy.

Yue Feng called over Captain David and, once again, used the specialized hook remover to extract the hook from its mouth. This time, the shark that had been toyed with for so long was more unfortunate, drained of much of its energy. It swam in circles on the surface before finally steadying itself and plunging into the depths, out of sight.

“Attention all competing anglers, Red Devil’s angler Nasi has successfully caught a qualifying giant grouper, current progress 1/3!”

Over the walkie-talkie, other reports of anglers catching giant groupers sounded! In the time it took for Yue Feng’s boat to get to the fishing spot and the recent playing with the shark, this was already the third update.

After a series of attempts over time, more and more anglers were catching their first target fish species.

The underwater environment for giant groupers varied, with some holes being deep and others shallow. Certain areas with relatively simple terrain made it a bit easier to pull in the fish after hooking it. These settings were the only real chance for victory for most regular anglers.
