.....

“But I haven’t offended anyone lately.”

Yan Feifan said this and then left the rest unsaid.

It was hard to phrase.

Because he didn’t mean anything by it, but if he said it, it’d just sound weird.

Lu Ding laughed: “So you’re just collateral damage. Someone’s got beef with me but can’t kill me.”

“They can only come after you. That’s what you get for being my auxiliary investigator.”

Yan Feifan reached to his waist, pulled out a short blade and slapped it on the dash behind the steering wheel.

“This ain’t about me. This is a slap in your face, Lu Ge!”

“Later, I gotta let them know what it means to bully under someone else’s name, to throw weight around with a borrowed tiger's power. I might not kill him—”

“—but I’ll damn well make sure he gets it.”

“Hahahaha.....”

Lu Ding was laughing. He recognized that the blade Yan Feifan pulled out was the same one they used back when they took down Ma Qi from the Tianli Cult—

the same one they used to slash Wen Ruchu.

.....

Inside the abandoned factory in Bao Fan District.

Du Yongchun casually tossed a palm-sized brown box in the air.

With an impatient tone he said, “Why hasn’t Yan Feifan shown up yet? Is Yunhai 749 always this slow?”

“If this were back home, they’d be here in ten minutes, tops.”

Sure, smaller places—easy to get anywhere.

The Zhenla man replied, “How can Yunhai compare to Xingbang? You’re flattering them too much.”

Du Yongchun nodded indifferently: “True, then I’ll let him off for being, uh, late or whatever.”

“‘Fashionably late.’”

“Right, fashionably late. I’ll break an extra leg later to make up for it.”

As those words fell—

his phone lit up. The lookout outside had sent a message.

【They’re here】

Du Yongchun stood up: “Finally!”

He threw the brown box into the air again. Cracks split across the surface.

A sinister aura seeped out, glowing faintly.

Du Yongchun reached toward it.

The box instantly disintegrated and attached itself to his arm, transforming into a fierce arm guard that fused with his flesh.

His whole aura shifted. His left eye was dyed with a bloody hue.

Seeing him about to pounce,

the Zhenla man quickly stopped him: “Wait.”

Then picked up his phone and sent a message.

【How many people came?】

Lookout: 【Two】

The Zhenla man’s heart skipped a beat.

But then again, 749 Investigators usually deployed in pairs. That calmed him down for the moment.

Still, to be safe, he sent another message.

【Send a photo】

Minutes passed. No reply.

The Zhenla man grew uneasy.

Seeing him look so useless,

Du Yongchun’s eyes flashed with mockery: “What’re you scared of? As long as it’s not Lu Ding, it doesn’t matter.”

“Besides, he’s probably still at the training base—or still in Longbi.”

The Zhenla man didn’t respond.

Because it was true.

He was afraid of Lu Ding.

And there was nothing wrong with that.

He wasn’t the only one.

Everyone who underestimated Lu Ding was already rotting in the ground.

Only smart people survived.

But apparently, the Zhenla man had only been smart before.

Bzzz—bzzz—

His phone vibrated with an unread message.

He picked it up.

One glance—

the blood drained from his face in seconds. He froze on the spot.

His strange reaction made Du Yongchun frown: “What, did you see a ghost!?”

He snatched the phone.

On the screen—

a photo and a voice message.

In the photo, Lu Ding was gripping the crushed skull of the lookout Cultivator of Qi with one hand, holding a phone in the other, taking a selfie—

with a smile on his face.

At that moment—

Du Yongchun’s breathing turned ragged.

The Zhenla man had shown him Lu Ding’s photo before.

Who else could it be if not Lu Ding!!!!

“How is he here!!?”

“Why!? Why!? Wasn’t he supposed to be at the training base? Wasn’t he in Hetu? Wasn’t he at Longbi!!?”

“Thousands of kilometers—how the h*ll did he get back!!”

Du Yongchun clutched the phone, screaming hysterically.

Accidentally, his finger hit the voice message.

Lu Ding’s voice played:

“Guess where I am?”

Just an ordinary sentence.

But it sounded like the whisper of a demon.

Bang!!

Du Yongchun flung the phone.

“Not playing anymore! Let’s go, GO!!!!”

The last two words were nearly roared.

But now?

Too late.

BOOM!!!

The concrete wall behind them exploded.

A figure burst through.

One kick!!!

BANG!!!

Du Yongchun was blasted backward, body tumbling violently, until—Squelch!

A rusted steel pipe from an exposed conduit pierced through his gut.

The impact force was absorbed by the wall.

Cracks like a spiderweb spread across the cement.

“Cough cough cough cough.......”

Du Yongchun coughed blood, lowered his head, saw the long, blood-stained steel pipe sticking clean through his belly.

Then looked up.

Saw Lu Ding tearing off the head of a Hetu Cultivator of Qi.

He opened his mouth, voice broken and intermittent: “I... I...”

Thick blood dripped in strings from his lips.

“I am... Hetu’s...”

Slaughter unfolded before his eyes, but Du Yongchun was already emptied out by that one kick from Lu Ding.

His organs, intestines, even bones—who knows how many were shattered—and he’d been impaled by a steel pipe.

If he wasn’t a Cultivator of Qi, he’d be long dead.

He watched as Lu Ding swiftly eliminated the men he brought, weaving like a butterfly through chaos, lives vanishing with each motion, bodies smashed evenly.

The Zhenla man dropped to his knees with a thud.

Bowed and knocked his head on the floor repeatedly: “Lord Lu Taishui, Investigator Lu, I had nothing to do with it, I was just the guide, please spare me, please!”

While he begged,

Yan Feifan drew his short blade, holding a phone, and strolled behind him. He yanked the Zhenla man's hair, exposing his neck.

He still tried to resist.

But one look from Lu Ding froze him completely.

He didn’t dare move.

Only bowed his head for the blade.

Yan Feifan pressed the knife to his throat.

Slowly drew a line of blood.

Whispered beside his ear: “You insulted Lu Ge’s intelligence.”

Blood sprayed.

Strength drained away. The world faded to grayscale.

From beginning to end, the Zhenla man never fought back.

His eyes never left Lu Ding.

Pleading, confused, dazed.

Why was Lu Ding here? Wasn’t he supposed to be at the training base? In Hetu?

They came to Yunhai in a rush specifically to avoid Lu Ding.

To prevent any chance of delay—

To make absolutely sure Lu Ding wouldn’t catch wind of it.

And yet.

He still came back.

The Zhenla man thought his plan was airtight. But Lu Ding—

Lu Ding hadn’t rested at all.

He was just focused on coming back and making a dramatic entrance.

And he ran right into them.

If it had been anyone else, their quick and ruthless tactics might’ve worked.

Too bad—

they were just unlucky.
