.....

The two of them laughed wildly, the kind of laughter that faintly gave off a not-so-smart vibe.

The Zhenla man reminded him, “To avoid anything dragging out, we’ve gotta move during the day.”

Du Yongchun didn’t quite get it.

“Wouldn’t stuff like this usually be done at night?”

Sneaking around, stealing, arson, murder—most people naturally think of doing these things at night.

That’s pretty much an unwritten rule.

But—

The Zhenla man shook his head: “Day or night only matters for regular people—it doesn’t make a difference for Cultivators of Qi.”

“Also, 749 Bureau agents in Great Han usually operate at night. They mostly deal with monsters and demons, and those tend to show up at night.”

“So daytime is when they’re most off guard. As long as we lure Yan Feifan out, the rest of the plan will basically go off without a hitch!”

He said this with the look of someone shrewd and calculating—but still miscalculating.

Unfortunately, Du Yongchun wasn’t too bright either.

So he asked, “Then how do we lure him out?”

He’d never been to Yunhai, even less to Bao Fan District—he was flying blind and had to rely entirely on the Zhenla guy.

“That’s simple. As a Patrol Investigator, if any special incident happens in his jurisdiction, he has to respond immediately. All we have to do is stir something up.”

“Then report it to Public Security. They’ll notify Yan Feifan, and he’ll show up in no time.”

“There used to be a group called Wuzang Shengshe in Bao Fan District. They’re now an external unit under Yunhai 749. They used to have conflicts with Lu Ding.”

“The conflict started because Wuzang Shengshe’s Tang Hu detained a few Public Security officers. I heard this from them before I left last time.”

“If we cause trouble in the jurisdiction of that Public Security office, make it look like something normal folks can’t handle, they’ll definitely call in Yan Feifan.”

“That’s the safest, most secure plan.”

As he spoke, the Zhenla man pulled out his phone and opened the map.

“Look here, this is the Public Security office. There’s an abandoned factory nearby—almost no one goes there. I once had a meeting with Wuzang Shengshe folks there.”

“If we lure people over there, then it’s our game to play however we want.”

.....

Elsewhere.

After enjoying the scenery along the way, Lu Ding’s group arrived at base.

Yan Feifan had just returned the vehicle with the Wuzang Shengshe crew and finished some required procedures.

Then his phone rang.

Gao Zhengliang was calling.

He answered.

“Patrol Investigator Yan, there’s a special incident reported over at the abandoned factory. The area’s sealed off now—please go take a look.”

“Got it. I’m on my way.”

He tucked away the phone and was about to move.

But suddenly stopped.

He was originally planning to go alone—didn’t want to bother Lu Ding.

He could handle it himself. Worst case, he could still run.

But then he thought—

Wait a minute!

Lu Ding being away had almost made him develop the dangerous habit of acting independently.

That wouldn’t do.

He knew exactly where he stood.

This kind of shortcut-thinking usually leads to even bigger problems.

You only carry what your ability can hold.

Besides, the fact that something happened the moment Lu Ge got back—bit too convenient.

Better report it.

With that thought,

Yan Feifan rushed out of the processing room and approached Lu Ding, who was casually watching videos nearby.

“Lu Ge, something’s up at the abandoned factory. A special incident. What do you think...”

Lu Ding set his phone down and glanced at Bai Hemen: “It's our jurisdiction. Feifan and I will handle it. You go see Grandma.”

Ever since returning to Yunhai, Bai Hemen had been absent-minded.

Barely spoke.

His face couldn’t hide emotions—Lu Ding could tell right away.

He was missing his grandma.

Bai Hemen didn’t refuse. With Lu Ding around, nothing would happen.

Besides, if Lu Ding couldn’t handle it,

he wouldn’t be able to help anyway.

More importantly, he really did miss Grandma.

Ever since the trip to the Northwest, Bai Hemen had felt empty inside.

“Okay. If anything happens, text or call me.”

“Got it. Go on.”

Bai Hemen turned and left, walking fast.

Lu Ding watched him until he disappeared from view.

His thoughts paused for a moment.

Maybe I should go visit the orphanage too?

He smiled, then dismissed the idea.

The old director was long gone.

The orphanage had already been torn down—new buildings stood there now. Going back would just mean staring at bare ground. A nostalgia trip with no meaning.

No point thinking about it too much.

“Let’s go too. I want to see what kind of nonsense could stir up trouble at an abandoned factory in broad daylight.”

“Never heard anything shady about that place before.”

Beside him, Yan Feifan held up his phone, reading Gao Zhengliang’s brief report.

“Report came from the Gingko Public Security Office. They sent officers to check it out. As soon as they entered, they ran into a ghost maze—one badly injured, one lightly.”

“Based on the report time, the officers’ dispatch time, subtracting travel time, and adding the light injury officer’s report time—”

“It’s all within two hours.”

“Basically the same amount of time we spent returning from Yunhai University, handling procedures, returning uniforms and the car.”

“In less than two hours—one severely injured, one lightly—and neither of the officers were tortured.”

“That doesn’t match ghost maze behavior. It feels off.”

Ghost mazes, to put it bluntly, are when some dirty spirit messes with you.

Like a brat torturing small animals.

It’s all about the torment.

If you get out in two hours, there’s no way you should be badly injured.

And if you are seriously hurt, that means the spirit got some emotional payoff—no way it’d let you out in just two hours.

The light injury doesn’t count—just the heavy one.

You’re supposed to die in there. That’s when it’s satisfied.

Plus someone reported it.

So Yan Feifan speculated, “I think someone’s deliberately luring you out, Lu Ge.”

He started the engine.

Lu Ding opened the door and got in: “No, I just got back, and the training facility’s confidentiality is tight. Only a handful of people know I’d be returning to Yunhai.”

“No one else could’ve known I’m back.”

“As for folks here in Yunhai, only Wuzang Shengshe and a few superiors know.”

“No need to mention the leadership. As for Wuzang Shengshe, they’re too low-level. The people they interact with—unless they’re brain-dead—wouldn’t dare target me.”

Status determines ceiling.

Harsh, but true.

A group of Linghai Realm Cultivators of Qi, with no backing—the level of people they can reach is already capped.

As far as Yunhai was concerned, Lu Ding’s public combat strength was enough that even Si Ming Realm folks avoided him.

With the strength he’d gained recently, even Earth Observer Realm cultivators didn’t worry him much.

So, it was unlikely any leaks came from Wuzang Shengshe.

If that’s not it, and this isn’t it either—

Yan Feifan stepped on the gas.

In a low voice: “Then they’re targeting me.”
