Fight, Flight, or Freeze: The Healer's Story
Chapter 364: You Don’t Understand

Chapter 364: You Don’t Understand

When the darkness finally faded, I could make out the image of a figure standing in a... kitchen.

Blinking rapidly to clear my vision, I stared at the woman making some bread in front of a wooden countertop. "Li Dai Lu?" I asked cautiously as the man who brought me here stepped forward and gave Li Dai Lu a kiss on the forehead.

"Healer?" she replied, looking as stunned as I was. Turning to the man holding her, she rubbed her forehead, not caring that she was getting flour on it. "Tell me that you didn’t kidnap the Healer."

The man shrugged as a second man walked into the kitchen. "What is the point of having a doctor on call if we don’t actually call her when we have concerns."

I must not have heard him right because I really don’t remember being on call.

"I told you that I was fine," the woman hissed at the new guy. He was huge, but not as big as Rip. However, there was a much darker aura around Li Dai Lu’s men that made me uneasy. But they were hers, so it didn’t really matter one way or the other.

"And I told you that I would feel a lot better if we got you checked out," said a third man coming into the room.

"So you decided to kidnap the Healer... when I specifically told you not to?" Li Dai Lu sighed and once again rubbed her head as if she had a headache or something. "Did you at least ask her if she was free?"

"She was just cutting up some berries in the kitchen," answered the man who took me. "It didn’t look like she was busy."

Li Dai Lu and I sighed at the same time. "Clearly, if she was in the middle of cutting up something, she was busy. Did you tell her why you were looking for her?"

"No, what would be the point? She was coming with me anyway and this way you can explain things to her. I was worried that I would just screw it up."

"Did you give her time to tell her men that you were taking her? Did you leave a note that you have her and where they could find her? Or did you just knock on the door and take her?" asked Li Dai Lu, completely resigned to the situation.

At least one of us was, I guess.

"Is now a good time or a bad time to point out that he showed up in the middle of my kitchen? He didn’t exactly use the front door," I pointed out with a sigh. My men were going to be livid and probably more than a bit concerned... and scared.

Wait... did I manage to kill Alpha before I was taken? I couldn’t remember. They might assume that Alpha took me again and lose their shit.

"Of course, he didn’t use the front door. Because that was what normal people did," replied Li Dai Lu with an apologetic smile on her face.

"I was in too much of a hurry to worry about anything like that. She is here, and now she can make you better."

"And I told you that I was fine."

"Okay!" I said, stepping forward. It was like I was back in the hospital, dealing with patients and their families. "Clearly, he isn’t going to let me go home until I check you out. So, let’s get that done, and maybe I can be sent home before the guys start to panic."

Walking toward Li Dai Lu, I held out my hand, waiting for her decision. I refused to help her if she didn’t want the help.

With a long sigh and a glare at the man who stole me, she placed her hand in mine. Calling on my healing power, I entered her body and checked everything out. Her body seemed to glow lavender, and I saw two flames inside of her body rushing out to greet me.

’Hello,’ I thought to the flames as my own green energy rose up to meet it. The two energies seemed to look at each other for a moment before the pink and blue flames parted to let my life force check over the woman.

"She is fine," I replied after a moment. "The babies are completely healthy and active. She is probably just having Braxton Hicks contractions." The woman was healthier than almost anyone I have treated since the end of the world. It was like there was a special force inside of her designed to protect her from absolutely everything.

"Well, what are you going to do about it?" asked the third man who had come into the room. "Fix it."

"Braxton Hicks isn’t something that you can really fix," I explained slowly. I understood protective men, I had seven of them, but these were something that was completely normal in the last month of pregnancy.

"I don’t think you understand," said a fourth man as he entered the kitchen and I was starting to feel more than a little uncomfortable. There were four of them and one of me.

I pushed my powers down through my feet, surprised to see that there was something living inside of the floors. Connecting to it, it led me to the ground outside and an entire network of roots and animals.

Feeling a rush of my power, I turned them outward to the four men in front of me... only to discover that there was nothing where they were standing.

Looking directly at the man in front of me, I tried to connect to the wooden flooring under his feet.

But as far as the energy was concerned, there was nothing there. It was like he was dead.

Fuck me gently with a chainsaw; this was not good.

I was brought to an unknown location by four men that my powers were trying to convince me were dead.

"What don’t I understand?" I asked after a second, trying to regain my composure. I needed to come up with an escape route, and panicking wouldn’t help.
