Chapter 301: Thank You, Princess

Wu Bai Hee could feel the tension in the room before she even got there, but it didn’t bother her.

"Hello," she murmured softly, remembering to look down at the ground while she spoke, only raising her eyes every so often. She clasped her hands over her stomach, one over the other, her thumbs interlocked.

It had taken her a while of maintaining this pose in the mirror before she felt she had perfected it. And it had taken a lot of work to make sure that her limbs flowed gracefully as they should while keeping the perfect expression on her face.

Whether they knew it or not, men were easily susceptible to manipulation; a look or even the way a woman carried herself was known to reduce tension and calm down anger.

The effect of her presence in the living room was instantaneous. The man who was just yelling at Zhao Jun Jie took one look at her, and his shoulders dropped; his expression changed, and he took in a deep breath.

"There were zombies in the city," he started, not sure where to look when he was addressing her. It was like he would dirty her if he stared at her for too long. She loved that. Men who held themselves up morally were so much easier to wrap around her finger.

"Really?" she gasped, "But how?"

"I don’t know. But over a hundred and fifty people died last night, and those numbers are conservative. My own wife was taken last night." His voice caught when he spoke of his wife, and Wu Bai Hee forced her shoulder to drop in sympathy.

"I am so sorry to hear that," she said softly, reaching forward to touch his arm. He was wearing a cheap jacket of some kind, but that didn’t matter. She gently exhaled and watched as a small cloud of her power seeped into the man.

"Thank you. But that doesn’t change the fact that it shouldn’t have happened in the first place. We rely on you and your husband to protect us, and you failed," said the man, shooting a glare over to Zhou Jun Jie.

Wu Bai Hee bit down on her tongue frantically; the need to deny that that man was her husband was overwhelming. The only person worthy of her was Liu Wei. And she would never accept anyone less than him.

"The zombies, did you see them? Were they really as disgusting and slow as people describe them? I heard that they were green creatures with missing limbs and chunks of flesh taken out of them. I heard that they couldn’t speak but rather moaned when they came near something they wanted to eat. Was your wife disabled? I also heard the zombies were really slow, and any strike to the head would kill them. Was that what it was like?"

Wu Bai Hee’s words flowed smoothly out of her mouth as she painted a picture of what most associated zombies with. She weaved her manipulation tighter and tighter around the man in front of her.

While there was a large crowd behind him, she instinctively knew that he was the one with the reigns.

She paused for a second, seeing the threat that was within arms’ reach. No, she couldn’t let him win... she couldn’t let him live.

She needed to change the narrative, needed to twist the truth.

"No, that wasn’t what attacked us last night. These monsters had huge, shark-like teeth and a massive head. They were incredibly fast, climbing up the walls outside of buildings until they found their prey. They also weren’t green," denied the man with a shake of his head.

"Well, if they didn’t look like a zombie or acted like one, how could you be so sure that that was what took your wife? Or even any of the victims? We know what zombies look like. We’ve known it since before we even saw one in real life," pressed Wu Bai Hee, spreading her power out until it reached everyone around them.

She could see people nodding their heads as they listened to her, and she dipped her head, smirking in delight.

"But what else could they be if not zombies?" grunted the leader, but Wu Bai Hee could see him wavering.

"I have no idea," she murmured, patting the man on his arm. "But the God who blessed my child told me that the zombies weren’t able to get into City A. So whatever attacked your family... it couldn’t have been a zombie."

Sometimes, changing things from black to white was incredibly satisfying. None of these people would have ever left the sanctuary, would never have seen a zombie in real life... and even if they had, it wouldn’t change the fact that they were now no longer sure what they did see.

"I’ll ask God again and see what we can do to keep our city safe? Okay?" she murmured, letting go of the man and walking over to the kitchen counter where the bowls of food sat. "I know I shouldn’t give this away. People worked hard and sacrificed so much to be able to provide me with this food, but I want you to have it. Share with those who need it. It’s impossible for me to express my grief on the loss of your loved ones, and I know that this is only a paltry gesture, but please... take it."

Holding out the large bowls, she placed them in the man’s arms. "Please."

"Thank you, Princess. May your mercy always shine down on us," murmured one of the women in the crowd as she reached forward and grabbed an apple out of the bowl.

Wu Bai Hee shuddered at the dirty hand and cracked nails that gripped the apple like it was a treasure or something.

She was going to have to get one of the ’helpers’ to scrub down every surface of the place. That type of filth should never touch her.

"It’s nothing. Please, let me know if there is ever anything that I can do for you," smiled the woman as the people showed themselves out of the condo.

Closing the door behind her, Wu Bai Hee turned around and saw Zhao Jun Jie sneering at her, his hands slowly clapping.
