Fight, Flight, or Freeze: The Healer's Story
Chapter 280: Safe Travels

Chapter 280: Safe Travels

Taking Si Dong’s hand to ensure he didn’t get lost, I let him look out of my eyes. "They don’t react to their environment," I explained to him before shoving a memory at him from when I woke up in Bin An Sha’s medical room after I was first freed.

I let him feel the pounding of my heart, the terror, the need to find a small space or corner to hide. Not understanding that I was actually freed. I let him watch as Rip had to crouch down in front of me, calming me down.

Then I showed him pictures of the other women at Camp Hell... their reactions to being prisoners and not knowing what was going on. I had to wonder if he could taste the fear and desperation in the air like I could.

"They haven’t once acted like a captive," grunted Si Dong, his voice sending goosebumps up and down my arms as he pulled me into his embrace.

The scene inside of my head shifted as I concentrated on the individual women.

They didn’t have glazed eyes; their bodies weren’t tense as they stood out in the open.

Sure, they were clinging onto the men around them like they were scared, but their micro-expressions didn’t tell the same story that their bodies did.

And then I brought Si Dong into the web of power. I took him through the arteries of all of the roots around us and showed him the ring of energy encircling us. "Those are zombies," I explained, pointing to the brighter bits of light. "I have no idea how far away from us they are, but there are more now than there were when we first got here."

"Then why aren’t they attacking us? If we had stolen their food, you would think that they’d be rushing here to stop us all from leaving," mused Si Dong as he looked around at the energy. The bright green lights darted around us as birds flew away in the outside world and other creatures went about their daily life.

A smirk appeared on my face, and I took Si Dong’s hand and brought it toward one of the highways, leading to a zombie. Gripping onto it, it let his body absorb the energy right from the source, making sure that I didn’t let him take too much.

"Holy shit," he gasped as he watched the energy flowing out of the zombie and into him. Normally, everyone that I shared energy with could feel it entering their bodies, mostly from their feet, but this was the first time I had ever shown someone what it was like from my point of view.

"That’s amazing," he breathed out as I removed his hand. There was a sudden burst of fear as the zombie realized what had happened to it. Then Si Dong and I watched as the energy of the zombies got further away from where they were before.

"They are terrified of you," smirked Si Dong, kissing me on my temple. "You wonderful, gorgeous woman." Letting out a long sigh, he rested his cheek on top of my head. "And now I see what you were talking about. There is something wrong with those women."

"And as long as that statement comes out of my mouth, it is nothing more than the ramblings of a jealous woman," I replied, rolling my eyes.

"Don’t worry. We’ll go to the ranch, warn them, and go back to the city. We’ll pack up Bin An Sha’s condo and get on the road to City D. You don’t have to concern yourself with the death of morons."

With a laugh, I kicked Si Dong out of my body and into his own.

’You in one piece? Like I said, I’ve never done that before,’ I whispered into his mind.

’Then I am so glad to be your first,’ he whispered back into my mind.

Suddenly, there was a very loud clearing of a throat, bringing me completely back into the present.

"I take it you are all in agreement? That is if those two can stop flirting with each other long enough to concentrate on their survival." Jia Yu Sheng’s words were like a splash of cold water on my face, and I could feel myself turning pale.

"We can manage our own survival just fine. After all, it was you who were too much of a chicken shit to even come into City B in the first place," smirked Si Dong. His words were harsh, but the thumb he was using to rub the bottom of my wrist was soft and gentle. "I wonder how long it will be until you regret that choice... huh?’

"Whatever, let’s not get into it," interjected Chang Guo Zi as he clasped his friend on the shoulder. "Let’s get going. We’re getting a late start to the day already, and we are still looking at at least a week to get back to City A. At least we got the supplies needed."

"Yeah, that will be a benefit of not going with them. At least we will have more time on the road instead of catering to a princess that can’t be bothered to wake up on time."

His words hurt a bit, but at the same time, I wasn’t going to care about the opinion of a man I may never see again. And besides, none of my guys seemed to care how long I slept.

"Safe travels," nodded Cheng Bo Jing, always the voice of reason, as Rip just cracked his knuckles and Bin An Sha twirled his knife.

We watched the large group of people heading out, preferring to stay in the parking lot until they were gone.

"Being in the emergency room, I saw a lot of police officers," I said randomly as Ye Mei Hui looked over her shoulder and smirked at me. I found it funny because I had no idea what she was so satisfied with. The man she wanted was beside me anyway. "They maintained that you could piss anyone in the world off, but you could never piss off a doctor. You never knew when you might end up under their knife."

It always made me laugh when they said that with a wink. And while I would like to think that most doctors have a strict moral code, I know well enough just how human we are.

"Then let’s hope that they never need a doctor," smirked Bin An Sha, throwing the knife up in the air. With a wave of his hand, it disappeared. "Now, are we going to look for supplies or head out now?"
