Chapter 237: Make It On Their Own
We ended up staying in the caves for three days before the rain let up. Almost everyone avoided going out in the rain, but Chang Guo Zi made sure that they were drinking it, no matter what.
"This isn’t what you said would happen," grunted Chang Guo Zi as everyone started filing out of the caves. It was early morning, so everyone was more than ready to get going. "Did you say that we were three days out into our mission when we started to head back? We’ve been gone for a week now."
"Things changed," I shrugged, not really wanting to explain anything. If he didn’t trust me, then he needed to stop asking me questions.
I hadn’t been along before when I saw everyone getting killed. I hadn’t saved the Tree of Life, and I most definitely didn’t get a tattoo of a living snake.
And I never saw the rain coming either.
To say that a lot of things had changed was an understatement. But at least now I knew we were on the right path.
City B would give us a whole new path to potentially go down, and it was going to be... interesting, to say the least.
-----
"We are looking at another two to three days before we even get to the outskirts of City B," sighed Chang Guo Zi as he looked into the fire in front of us. We had stopped to camp for the night, and I could hear the grumbling of everyone around us.
"You can always turn around and go back to City A," shrugged Bai Long Qiang as he dug into yet another bowl of stew. After the rain, there seemed to be even more animals out in the forest, so hunting for our food wasn’t all that hard.
And even after all this, I still loved Yuan Bao stews.
"We would be going back empty handed," shrugged Chang Guo Zi. "At this point, we are damned if we do and damned if we don’t."
"I guess there is a third option," I said, looking up at the man I actually respected as a boss. "You can all stay here, and we can go get the stuff."
Everyone jerked their heads around to look at me, surprised by my suggestion.
But honestly, this way would be the easiest for all of us. I didn’t have to hide who I was with only the guys around; I could exercise my powers to my heart’s content and not have to worry about how I would look like to others.
And I could stop explaining everything until I was blue in the face.
Chang Guo Zi went back to staring at the fire. "You know, that is going to take a level of trust that I don’t know if the other teams have," he said, once again sighing like the weight of the world was on his shoulders.
"Do you have that level of trust in us?" asked Fan Teng Fei, never one to beat around the bush. He was always the quiet one, the one that blended into the shadows until he needed to strike.
"Honestly? I’m not sure," admitted Chang Guo Zi. "I know that you haven’t steered us wrong once since we’ve been a part of the same team, but I am literally putting my life and the lives of my men in your hands. If we go back to the city without the glassware and sheets, we might as well kill ourselves. It would be less painful that way."
I shook my head, wondering why he was still willing to put up with everything, knowing what he knew. He wasn’t one of the mindless idiots who obeyed Wu Bai Hee’s every word, and still, he acted like he did sometimes.
"Then come," I shrugged. Like I said, I was getting tired of constantly repeating myself and no one listening. "Either way, my men and I will be going into City B."
"I’ll ask the other leaders what they think is best," grunted Chang Guo Zi, coming to his feet.
When the other guys quickly finished off their meal, I realized that the decision was made. And I wasn’t upset about it at all.
Si Dong waited until Chang Guo Zi was out of sight before he turned to me. "You know, we could just leave in the middle of the night. No one would see us, let alone stop us."
I shook my head. "Might as well wait until our fearless leader has come back with a decision, one way or the other," I replied, grabbing a big chuck of meat with my fingers and throwing it into my mouth. Honestly, the only reason why I didn’t automatically agree with Si Dong was because I didn’t want to leave Yuan Bao.
His food was too good, and after spending so much time in Camp Hell, my stomach wasn’t willing to go back to mediocre food.
"Hey! I thought I was your fearless leader," demanded Bai Long Qiang after a moment, his head coming up from where he was eating, and there was even a piece of rabbit hanging down from his mouth as he spoke.
"You are. But I was referring to the other one," I smiled as he grunted and continued to eat.
"Are you going to give us a heads up as to why City B is so important?" asked Ye Yao Zu, looking at me from across the fire.
"I’m hungry," I answered with a shrug. "I am still running on empty. While the rain helped a lot, it just made the empty hole even bigger."
Rip and Bin A Sha sat up straighter. "You’re hungry?" asked Rip, looking around at where he could find something to help me with that problem.
I nodded my head. "And City B is nothing but a city full of zombies. And where there are zombies—" I trailed off, looking at Rip.
"There will be Reavers," he finished. Pressing his bowl to his lips, he finished whatever was left in it. "We will leave tonight. We can get there much faster on our own than if we followed with everyone else."
"But—" I said, realizing just how much I managed to shoot myself in the foot.
"No, Rip is right. If you are hungry, we need to get you fed as soon as possible," agreed Fan Teng Fei, coming to his feet as if we were going to leave right this second. "If the others want to come, they can make it on their own."
