Fight, Flight, or Freeze: The Healer's Story -
Chapter 230: We Owe Her
Chapter 230: We Owe Her
I felt my knees give out as I brought both Cheng Bo Jing and me out of Wu Ying Tai’s body.
We had managed to remove all residue of the toxins inside of her completely and healed her completely. There wouldn’t be any recovery time or anything like that. She didn’t have to worry about any sequelae from having been poisoned since the womb.
Nothing.
She could get out of bed right now and dance a jig if she wanted to.
Oh, how I wished I had this power as a doctor. I would have never lost a patient or had to watch someone slowly being eaten away by a disease we had no cure for.
I smirked at that thought. Even if I had that type of power before the end of the world, I would have had to hide it, just in case someone noticed it. I would have had to watch those same people dying, knowing that I could save them, but chose not to.
Yeah, I was glad that I didn’t have this ability back then.
"Another one!" grunted Rip as Cheng Bo Jing, his arms still around me, guided me down to the floor.
There was the sound of a door opening and a struggle, but I was too tired to process it. I felt like I had been completely wrung out. I hadn’t even used this much power to save Li Dai Lu’s babies, let alone any of the other times I was forced to heal.
"Open your eyes, Little Bird," grunted Rip, and I could feel him crouching over me as I curled up in Cheng Bo Jing’s lap.
Slowly, as if they weighed a hundred pounds, I opened my eyes to see the mutilated face of a Reaver in front of me.
His yellow teeth were inches away from my face, so close that I could smell the rot and decay on his breath and even saw a chuck of flesh he clearly wasn’t able to floss away.
Huh, I wonder if he managed to get his hands on any of the Princess Teams or if he only ate the zombies after they had gorged themselves.
The creature was wriggling around frantically, trying to get out of Rip’s grasp, but that was never going to happen.
As if he thought the same thing I did, he turned his attention to me and lunged forward, his mouth open and his teeth ready to rip out my flesh.
However, it came down to who was hungrier.
As he lunged forward, I pushed my upper body away from Cheng Bo Jing and to the creature, capturing his face in my hands before he could so much as touch me.
I moaned in delight as his life force poured into me like a tap on full. There was no hesitation as my body revelled in the energy, gorging itself on it.
But it wasn’t enough. I was still so hungry.
"Another," snapped Rip as the Reaver disintegrated into ashes around the three of us.
Even though I was touching Cheng Bo Jing, my body refused to take any of his energy. I was surprised and a bit embarrassed that I hadn’t considered what would happen if I did that while in his arms, but I was glad to know that no matter what, my power wouldn’t hurt my men.
The door opened again, and yet another Reaver was brought in.
"This is the last one," warned a familiar voice. Bai Long Qiang. What was he doing here?
"I’ll be fine," I said, trying to smile at him. I wasn’t sure if he was even able to see me, seeing as I was sitting on the floor on the other side of the bed. Just in case, I lifted my hand up to wave at him.
Hearing his chuckle, I knew that he saw me.
"You won’t be fine," grunted Rip, clearly not impressed as he pulled down the last Reaver to the floor in front of me. "This won’t be nearly enough."
"No," I agreed, my power still desperately hungry as it eyed the creature in front of me. Slowly, I placed a hand on the bleeding cheek of the Reaver and forced my power to slow down. Maybe if I took little bites at a time, I wouldn’t feel so empty. "But it needs to be enough for now."
"Why?" asked Rip, clearly not impressed with my answer.
"We still need to go to City B to get the supplies and complete the mission," I reminded him as my power sipped from the life force of the Reaver. It wouldn’t even fill me up a fraction of the amount that I needed it to, but it should be enough to get my legs under me again.
"Fuck the mission," growled a voice outside the door. Ah, Fan Teng Fei. I smiled as I heard his voice. I wished I could see him, but that was not in the cards for right now.
"No. We have already lost over half of the teams, and they are all the Princess Teams," I answered, shaking my head. We needed to be able to go back to the city, even if it was just to deal with a few things. We couldn’t just run away now.
"Exactly, we are going to be punished anyways; why not just say screw it all?" pipped up Si Dong. He did not sound as carefree and happy as he usually was, and I got that. We were free of City A, and I didn’t want to go back there any more than the rest of them did.
But I could feel it in my gut that that was where we needed to be.
"Okay," nodded Cheng Bo Jing. "We’ll finish the mission, bring back everything, and receive our punishment."
Knowing that he understood, I relaxed back into his body, bringing the Reaver with me.
"If I could interject?" murmured a voice from the bed.
"Yeah?" I asked, closing my eyes as I continued to try and restrain my power. I was sure that I had traumatized the patient enough for one day. I didn’t even know how many people I drained dry in front of her.
"Huang Xiao Wen can give you a free pass through any Black Mountain territory. It should make getting to City B easier," she offered.
There was silence at her statement for a moment.
"We owe her, Xiao Wen. Not only for completely healing me but for having the ability to do what you refused to," continued Wu Ying Tai. Her voice was stronger than I had ever heard her before.
