Fight, Flight, or Freeze: The Healer's Story
Chapter 229: Survival Of The Fittest

Chapter 229: Survival Of The Fittest

I started to panic a bit as I felt more power flowing through me. Bin An Sha must have given me someone else, but, just as it had before, the power was going into the poison and not into the patient.

I needed to find a way to remove the deadly toxin, but I didn’t know how.

A dialysis machine would have helped if I had one, and the poison was limited to her blood, but it covered everything. I seriously had to wonder just how she was able to stay alive for so long with so much of her body destroyed.

I shook my head; I needed to find a way to get the poison out of her entirely before I could then heal everything.

"Do we have a toxic user here?" I asked, pulling myself out of her body. I looked down at the side of my leg where yet another man rested against me, my hand in his hair.

"I’m one," said Cheng Bo Jing, entering the room. His brows furrowed for a moment as he saw the man touching me but didn’t otherwise say anything. "What do you need?"

"She has been poisoned for a very long time," I started to explain. I knew what I wanted to do, but I didn’t know if it was possible. "Never mind, come here."

I held out my hand to him, half expecting him to pull away from me. However, without hesitation, he gripped my hand and came to stand beside me, wrapping my body in his.

"Please let this work," I whispered under my breath. Closing my eyes, I pulled both myself and Chang Bo Jing inside of Wu Ying Tai.

"What?" asked Cheng Bo Jing, confused as he looked around. I was in the same place as before, but this time, I had a strong pair of arms wrapped around me.

"This is what I see when I heal," I explained with a shrug. I didn’t know how I actually did anything; I just did it. It was like breathing; my body knew what needed to happen and just did it.

"So, we are inside of the woman?" clarified Chang Bo Jing, and I nodded.

"Do you see that blackness?" I asked, waving my hand around.

"It’s somewhat hard to miss," grunted my man, causing me to smile. I had honestly expected him to freak out, run away, or swear that he never wanted anything to do with me again.

Instead, he stood firmly by my side, my rock in the storm.

"It’s poison," I explained. "What you should see is nothing but bright red, healthy tissues, but instead, the toxin is acting like a barrier between my healing and the cells that need it."

"Okay," nodded Chang Bo Jing, pulling me tighter into his chest. "And that is why it seems to be eating up the green stuff?"

"That green stuff is me," I replied, sticking out my tongue. "It’s my power. But I am doing nothing but feeding it. If I stop, Wu Ying Tai will die. If I keep going, I will eventually die if I run out of people to siphon power from."

"Which explains the unknown guy touching you," grunted Cheng Bo Jing, and I realized that it bothered him more than he let on to see that. "How can I help?"

That was always his thing; how could he help me. And I depended on that more than I initially thought.

"I want to see if you can call the poison to you, like I can call the life force of someone to me," I explained. However, I had no idea how it would work.

If the poison was too strong, Cheng Bo Jing would just be poisoning himself instead. And if that was the case, then I would use one of the Reavers or humans and transfer the toxins to them instead.

"Understood," smiled Cheng Bo Jing as he tilted my head back and gave me a light kiss on my lips. "For good luck," he smirked, rubbing my lip with his thumb.

My brain refused to function for a whole minute as it processed that kiss. It was the first one of that kind he had ever given me, and it made my knees weak.

By the time I had snapped out of it, I saw Cheng Bo Jing pulling the black shadows out of Wu Ying Tai’s body and bringing it into his.

"Are you okay?" I asked, more than a bit worried. I couldn’t check his body right now since all of my power was going into the woman on the bed, and that was just upping my anxiety.

"Honestly?" he said, sounding different somehow. "I have never felt better. It is adding to my powers, so instead of feeling weaker, I am getting stronger."

I nodded. I understood that since it was how I felt when I was taking the life force from someone else. But did that mean anyone could do that? Could someone just approach another with the same power and draw it away from them?

If that was the case, then the world was going to go to shit. Even more than it currently was. Might would make right, and only the most powerful would survive.

I scoffed at that thought. It brought Darwin’s theory of ’Survival of the fittest’ to a whole new level.

"We can’t tell anyone," I whispered as soon as I could see the grey tissue under where the toxins were. I directed my power to it, and in less than a second, it was back to being bright red.

Perfect. The experiment was a success.

"Focus on the toxins there," I said as I pointed to the heart. It wasn’t as damaged as the rest of the body was, but it was crucial that it did its job correctly as I continued to heal.

Cheng Bo Jing nodded his head and reached his hand out toward the heart. Now he was double fisting it, bringing the toxins in from two different sides into his body at the same time.

Hoping that it would not overload him, I focused my energy on the heart, turning it back to a healthy color as soon as all of the toxins had been removed.
