Chapter 106: Time To Make Friends?
Fan Teng Fei leaned back against the wall and watched the guy speaking. He definitely had a way with words, but why was he trying so hard?
If they didn’t want to listen, then they should just all die.
He remembered a time when his cousins and brothers had given up on training, saying that they didn’t know why they needed to do it. Fan Teng Fei was probably 15 years old then, and while he sometimes resented waking up before the sun rose to train, he understood that it was necessary.
However, it seemed that he was the only one of his generation to do so.
When he asked his grandfather why he didn’t insist that the others learn kung fu, his grandfather only shrugged and said: "You can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make it drink."
It had taken him far longer than he would admit before he finally understood his grandfather’s words. But he was right. You can show and tell and do everything possible to lead someone down the right path, but that doesn’t mean that they will take it.
"Nice to see that some things haven’t changed," spoke a woman as she entered the conference room. She had the air of a soldier and a socialite, and that combination made Fan Teng Fei confused. Normally, women from wealthy families did not go into the military, unless they were encouraged to do so for a reason.
"Sorry I am late to the meeting; healing really takes a lot out of me, as I am sure you know." The woman’s voice was piercing. Fan Teng Fei knew how much effort it took to heal someone; he had seen Wang Tian Mu pay that price over and over again every day she worked at the hospital.
But something told him that she was not talking about the same thing.
"I am surprised that they let you out," grunted one of the other men in the group of five. Fan Teng Fei cocked his head to the side, trying to read the undercurrents, but he couldn’t quite grasp what was going on. Why should she have been locked away? Especially if she was a military doctor... they would have been needed even more once the tide arrived.
"Country K’s naval Base thought that it was only fitting for them to offer my services so as to ensure victory," said the woman as she took a seat at the table. With the anger coming from the only other woman in the room, Fan Teng Fei was surprised that the whole room wasn’t engulfed in flames.
"Are you only offering your healing services? I mean, I heard your other... skills... were impressive as well." The third, originally seated at the table, spoke, his sharp tongue leaving cut marks behind as his words hit their target. The expression on her face was funny. Clearly, there was no love lost between the two groups...
So why did she look at that one man? Never mind, it was none of his business.
"How dare you!" snarled one of the men surrounding the new woman. Great, just what they needed, a catfight that ended up in a dog fight. Then again... if they are too concerned about each other, then City Y should sink all that much faster.
"What? I mean, I had heard that her combat skills were second to none. That was why she was made a Captain and given her own team. Right?"
An awkward silence filled the room as everyone looked at one another. No one wanted to trust their backs to people who were fighting like that. They were supposed to have a common enemy. Not go after each other.
"Let’s get on with the meeting now that everyone is here," said the Major General as he tried to get everything back under control. But it was too little too late.
"I think that it is safe to say that, out of all of us, Wang Chao has the most experience fighting the zombies, so I think we would listen to him in this matter," said the new woman, hearts practically forming in her eyes as she spoke to Wang Chao.
Great, one more thing to add to this shit show... a fucking love triangle.
"After all, he was the one who introduced us to our powers at the Naval Base. Not to mention, he was the one to teach us how to harness it."
Those words had Fan Teng Fei stiffening along with his comrades. Powers? This Wang Chao knew not only how to awaken powers but also how to use them?
Fan Teng Fei watched as Bai Long Qiang and Cheng Bo Jing shared a look. They needed more information on these powers. Was that what Bai Long Qiang had? Was that how he was able to burn down his house?
"I think that there is a difference between teaching you how to use your powers and fighting zombies," sneered the guy too stupid to live. Seriously, he really should have given up by now.
If Bai Long Qiang’s powers were enough to burn down a house... would it be enough to burn a zombie? And if it could burn a zombie... could it possibly kill them?
These were all important things to know. And so far, it seemed like only this Wang Chao and those he shared the information with knew the answers.
Maybe it was time for Si Dong to make some friends?
His mind whirling with all of the possibilities, he stopped paying attention to the conversation around him and concentrated on the new information he had been given.
In fact, it wasn’t until the team with Wang Chao had left the room that Fan Teng Fei realized something important.
They had the knowledge and ability to save this base and the entire city... and that couldn’t be tolerated.
The Major General looked around at the remaining five teams with a tight smile on his face. "Honestly, I don’t know what to say," he sighed as he rubbed his forehead, trying to fight off a headache. "You can all be dismissed. We’ll reconvene later and try to figure out where we go from here."
Bai Long Qiang smiled and stood up, nodding to the Major General. "Is there a place we can put up our tents?"
"Don’t be ridiculous. We’ll get a room set up for you, complete with food and amenities," smiled Deng June Hie as he motioned for Liao Gang Bo. "Since you are willing to risk your lives for us, it is the least we can do."
