Chapter 341: Chapter 341 Borrowing Your Auspicious Words
Cheng Qiaobei gripped the receipt tightly, but maintained an appropriate smile on his face.
After signing his name, he said, "Thank you, everyone."
Wei Lai walked over to the flower baskets. The baskets were small and ugly, with several bouquets clearly broken and the bases damaged—obviously recycled second-hand flower baskets.
Deng Yan also came closer. Having attended so many opening ceremonies, weddings, and business banquets, he recognized instantly that these flower baskets were meant to humiliate.
Wei Lai gritted her teeth and shouted angrily at several people, "Take these broken flower baskets away! We don’t want them!"
"Wei Lai," Cheng Qiaobei called out to her. Wei Lai turned her face, pale with fury, and said, "This is blatant disrespect."
Deng Yan quickly tugged at her arm, motioning for her to stop speaking.
Chen Ningxi anxiously held Cheng Qiaobei’s hand. Cheng Qiaobei smiled gently and said, "Don’t mind these things. Let’s go inside and have some cake."
"Let’s go," Chen Ningxi also pulled Wei Lai.
Wei Lai felt specially outraged because she held unique emotional ties to this new company. From renting the venue, decorating, purchasing, to handling the later stage decorations, she had been personally involved in every task.
Seeing those second-hand flower baskets felt like someone insulting her child.
Cheng Qiaobei handed Wei Lai the first slice of cake he had cut. "You’ve worked the hardest during this time; the first piece is for you."
Wei Lai shook her head, "Cheng, the first piece should be yours."
From the bottom of her heart, Wei Lai respected Cheng Qiaobei. Their relationship was one of both mentorship and friendship. Ever since she learned he planned to start his own company, Wei Lai had been ready to follow him.
Holding the cake, Cheng Qiaobei said, "Everyone in this company, every screw and detail, has your contribution. You’ve worked the hardest; don’t refuse, eat up."
Chen Ningxi and Deng Yan echoed, "Go ahead, eat."
Wei Lai accepted it with both hands, scooped up a bite, and placed it in her mouth. The cream was clearly sweet, but for some reason, an aching sourness filled her nose, and something welled up from her eyes.
Quickly turning her back, she sniffled and said, "I’ll go make some coffee."
Once she was in the break room, Cheng Qiaobei cut the second slice for Deng Yan. "Welcome, Deng Yan."
Deng Yan took it, nodded with a smile, and said, "Congratulations on your grand opening."
Cheng Qiaobei thanked him and served the third slice to Chen Ningxi. "For you, my wife."
Chen Ningxi scooped a bite and brought it to Cheng Qiaobei’s mouth. "Congratulations, husband. May customers flock to you and wealth flow in."
Cheng Qiaobei’s gaze softened. "I’ll accept your kind wishes."
Chen Ningxi said, "I’m going to check on Wei Lai."
Cheng Qiaobei responded, "Go ahead."
Only Deng Yan remained, and Cheng Qiaobei withdrew his gentle expression. His eyes turned icy and sharp.
"Do you think it was Mr. Cheng who sent them?" he asked Deng Yan.
Based on Deng Yan’s understanding of Cheng Xiangheng, he knew Cheng would never stoop to such petty, degrading tactics.
Deng Yan shook his head, "Mr. Cheng wouldn’t resort to such tricks."
That was Cheng Qiaobei’s thought too. "It won’t be hard to figure out who ordered them."
He tucked the receipt into his pocket. Deng Yan suggested, "It’s better if you don’t handle this personally; I’ll take care of it."
Cheng Qiaobei replied, "I’ll handle it. You have more important matters to attend to."
Deng Yan nodded, "Don’t worry; everything is progressing as planned."
Cheng Qiaobei instructed, "Make sure there’s no leakage."
Deng Yan reassured him, "Understood."
Meanwhile, in the break room.
Chen Ningxi and Wei Lai sat on a long bench, eating cake with freshly brewed coffee at hand.
Wei Lai still felt stifled. "I should have insisted they take all those baskets back or throw them out."
Chen Ningxi said, "Whoever did this probably wanted to see us react like that."
Her words made Wei Lai calm down.
Her gaze suddenly sharpened, and after pondering a bit, she said, "Someone ordering second-hand baskets—I can’t believe it was Mr. Cheng. He does things flawlessly on the surface; this isn’t his style."
To someone obsessed with appearances, reputation is everything.
If it came out that he sent second-hand flower baskets to his son’s company, he would become a laughingstock in the industry.
Chen Ningxi said, "Though I don’t know who did it, the one behind it clearly isn’t clever."
Wei Lai remarked, "Fools show up every year, but this year’s particularly bad."
"Pfft..." Chen Ningxi almost choked on her coffee, hurriedly grabbing a napkin to wipe her lips.
Wei Lai began speculating, "Chairman Zheng and Manager Cheng have already been subdued by Cheng. They wouldn’t dare stir trouble. Sun Dongchen is locked away, struggling to save himself, let alone having time for petty schemes. The others..."
Chen Ningxi studied Wei Lai’s expression. "Do you have someone in mind?"
Wei Lai wasn’t certain and shook her head. "...No."
After the opening celebration, Cheng Qiaobei arranged lunch.
Before everything was cleaned up, someone called out from the company entrance about another delivery. Wei Lai wondered, "Another delivery? What now?"
The courier asked, "Where should we place these flower baskets?"
This batch of flower baskets was undoubtedly high-end. Wei Lai’s eyes widened. "Who sent them? ...Deng Yan, Cheng, come quickly!"
Cheng Qiaobei emerged from the office upon hearing her. Of the four of them, Chen Ningxi was the most composed.
Wei Lai read the text on the baskets and thought she must be mistaken, "Chen... Chen Weichuan? Mayor Chen? Ye Yujun? Who’s this?"
"My mother-in-law," Cheng Qiaobei replied.
Wei Lai looked at Chen Ningxi in surprise. "Finally someone’s standing up for the boss."
Cheng Qiaobei glanced sideways at Chen Ningxi, who raised her chin slightly and leaned in to whisper in his ear, "Don’t blame me for acting without asking. When my parents heard their son-in-law was being disrespected, they insisted on making their support known."
Cheng Qiaobei laughed, "Having parents to back you up is always good."
Actually, when Chen Ningxi saw Cheng Qiaobei being disrespected, she couldn’t stand it. After noticing the baskets, she discreetly messaged Ye Yujun.
The deliveryman asked Cheng Qiaobei, "The new flower baskets are set up. Should we take the old ones away?"
It was clearly something Ye Yujun had arranged.
Cheng Qiaobei said, "Thank you very much."
A group of delivery men quickly hauled away the second-hand flower baskets.
Standing before the new flower baskets, Wei Lai said happily, "Now this is more like it—impressive."
Deng Yan noticed that besides the baskets sent by Chen Ningxi’s parents, there were also contributions from several renowned companies in the city. Surprisingly, even Zou Yong’s company had sent one.
"This basket is from President Zou," Deng Yan said to Wei Lai, implying that Zou Yong and Cheng Qiaobei had a rocky past.
Wei Lai whispered, "You don’t know, do you? Ning Xi calls President Zou her uncle."
Deng Yan understood immediately. So that’s the connection.
Cheng Qiaobei took Chen Ningxi’s hand and led her back to the office, closing the door behind them. He looked at her meaningfully.
"Tell me, did you inform Zou Yong?"
Chen Ningxi responded, "Not me."
Cheng Qiaobei paused, then reconsidered, "Could it be Dad?"
Chen Ningxi guessed, "Probably him."
Cheng Qiaobei pondered for a moment. "We should find an opportunity to invite my parents and Uncle Zou out for a meal."
