Chapter 330 Moving House
Chapter 330: Chapter 330 Moving House
On the last day of the year, a sum of money appeared in Cheng Qiaobei’s account. The homepage of Jade Jiali’s official website featured an announcement of Cheng Qiaobei’s resignation from the board and all his positions within the group, signaling his official departure from Jade Jiali Group.
In the northern winter, the mornings came late. Cheng Qiaobei, in his pajama pants, went to the kitchen out of habit to make a cup of black coffee and opened the floor-to-ceiling curtains of the balcony. The sky looked gloomy, shrouded in a layer of mist.
Standing tall in front of the window, his silhouette was striking as he sipped his black coffee to wake up.
The faint light floated on his sharply defined features. His deep gaze overlooked the city at his feet. From today onward, he was embarking on a different path.
The road ahead was long and filled with obstacles. But if he pressed on, he would get there. If he acted, he would succeed.
Suddenly, he felt a tight grip around his waist as she embraced him from behind.
"Mmm..." Chen Ningxi’s sleep-laden voice murmured, "Why are you up so early?"
Cheng Qiaobei caressed the hands around his waist, took a sip of coffee, and said intentionally pitifully, "Wife, I’m unemployed now. From now on, I’ll just moan..."
Before he could finish, she bit his back, leaving a row of neat teeth marks like a stamped seal.
"Alright, alright, I’ll stop teasing," Cheng Qiaobei chuckled. Raising his coffee cup, he pulled the person behind him to the front and held her in his arms. Resting his chin against her head, he said, "No reason, I just woke up suddenly."
Chen Ningxi tried to understand him. Perhaps he had been busy for so long that suddenly stopping required a physical and mental adjustment period.
Cheng Qiaobei took another sip of his black coffee. "You should sleep a bit more."
Chen Ningxi held onto his arm, leaning her head on his shoulder. "How can I sleep if you’re not with me?"
"Haha..." Cheng Qiaobei laughed softly. "Alright, I’ll keep you company."
After Chen Ningxi left for work, Cheng Qiaobei stayed at home alone, starting to tidy up the house. The phone on the coffee table rang every few minutes. Annoyed, Cheng Qiaobei muted it. Just as he put it down, he saw a call from Wei Lai.
He sat on the sofa and answered, "What’s up?"
Wei Lai said, "We’re almost done over here. Aren’t you coming to take a look?"
Cheng Qiaobei said, "Just handle it yourself."
Wei Lai rubbed his temples and asked again, "When are you planning to gather everyone?"
Cheng Qiaobei paused for a moment. "Let’s wait a bit longer."
Wei Lai looked at the nearly completed office. "Alright, your desk is arriving today. This afternoon, I have a bunch of deliveries to sign for. Just thinking about it is giving me a headache."
Cheng Qiaobei said, "I’m supporting you in spirit."
After hanging up the phone, Cheng Qiaobei continued cleaning. It wasn’t until close to noon that he finished tidying up.
Seeing that the fridge was empty, he grabbed his car keys and a reusable shopping bag, heading out to the nearby supermarket.
Usually dressed in suits, today he opted for casual home clothes: an off-white loungewear set under a gray long down jacket. With the hood on, no one on the streets could recognize him.
At the supermarket entrance, Cheng Qiaobei pushed a shopping cart and walked in. While selecting vegetables, a middle-aged man in a sharp suit approached him and addressed him:
"Chairman Cheng?"
Cheng Qiaobei disliked this title. Turning his face with displeasure towards the stranger, he asked, "Who are you?"
Noticing the cold look on Cheng Qiaobei’s face, the man offered a business card with both hands and introduced himself. "Hello, Mr. Cheng," he swiftly adjusted his address, "I’m Manager Zhan from Falcon Company. I couldn’t reach you by phone, so I had no choice but to meet you here at the supermarket."
To be honest, Cheng Qiaobei detested being followed.
Glancing at the information on the card, he realized the man was from a headhunting company. Given the type of company, he naturally understood the purpose of the visit.
He stuffed the business card back into Manager Zhan’s suit pocket and said, "Not interested."
Manager Zhan was rejected outright but didn’t give up, maintaining his polite smile. "Mr. Cheng, aren’t you interested in knowing who arranged for me to meet with you?"
Cheng Qiaobei said disdainfully, "No."
Just as Manager Zhan was about to introduce the other company, Cheng Qiaobei picked up a vegetable, tossed it in the cart, and pushed it away.
He focused on selecting ingredients, with Manager Zhan silently trailing behind him.
Seeing Cheng Qiaobei’s obvious reluctance, Manager Zhan refrained from forcing the conversation or discussing his company further.
At the cashier, where Cheng Qiaobei checked out, his items overflowed. Manager Zhan eagerly offered to help carry the bags.
"I’ll do it," Cheng Qiaobei said, taking the bags from him immediately. "No need. Thank you."
Striding toward the exit, Cheng Qiaobei walked quickly while Manager Zhan trotted behind him. "Mr. Cheng, the company that wants to meet you has a background in international five-star hotel chains. They are very sincere and willing to let you name your terms."
Reaching his car, Cheng Qiaobei tossed the groceries into the trunk all at once. Manager Zhan continued pitching the other company as he closed the trunk and looked at the man with a steady gaze. "Don’t bother. Step aside."
Walking around the man, he got into the car and drove out of the parking lot without hesitation.
The phone on the passenger seat lit up again, displaying another unfamiliar number. For the next few days, it seemed the phone wouldn’t stay quiet.
Before Cheng Qiaobei could enter his gated community, a call from Cheng Siluo came in.
He answered on speakerphone. "What is it?"
Cheng Siluo said, "Since you’re no longer with the company, the house you’re living in, which is under the company’s name, needs to be vacated within three days."
Cheng Qiaobei narrowed his eyes. The property had not been put under his name due to various reasons, though he had paid for it himself.
Even if a lawsuit was filed, it would take time to gather evidence. For now, he had no choice but to move out.
"Fine, fine, fine," Cheng Qiaobei sneered.
Cheng Siluo taunted smugly, "Not so high and mighty now, are you?"
Cheng Qiaobei let out a cold laugh. "You’ve really left yourself no way out."
Just as he was about to hang up, Cheng Siluo sneered, "Now tell me, whose life is harder?"
Without another word, Cheng Qiaobei ended the call.
At the same moment, Chen Ningxi was in a meeting and didn’t see Cheng Qiaobei’s WeChat message.
Meanwhile, Cheng Qiaobei stood in the center of the living room, calling a moving company.
Since their new home’s renovations weren’t complete, he had to discuss with Chen Ningxi about temporarily moving into her place.
Half an hour later, when Chen Ningxi walked out of the meeting room, she reached a quiet corner and called Cheng Qiaobei back.
"Qiaobei, what’s up?"
Frustration was evident in Cheng Qiaobei’s tone, but he admitted his lapse. "Wife, the house we’re currently living in belongs to the company, so we have to move."
Chen Ningxi said, "No problem. My place is empty. Just move everything there. You remember the password, right?"
Cheng Qiaobei replied, "I remember."
Hearing a voice prompt her to hurry, Cheng Qiaobei said, "Wife, go ahead and focus on your work. I’ll handle the move."
Despite the rush, Chen Ningxi added before hanging up, "I’ll take some time during lunch to come back and help."
Standing in the center of the living room, Cheng Qiaobei glanced around. The decor and furnishings were all personally arranged by Chen Ningxi. Every item held a memory of theirs.
The movers soon knocked on the door. The belongings were systematically packed and organized, but Cheng Qiaobei personally handled Chen Ningxi’s clothes.
While in the study, he picked up Lu Xingyan’s notebook and was about to set it down when he noticed what seemed to be an indentation of a single "Chen" character left by the pen cap. Curiously, he held it up to the light and vaguely discerned the name "Chen Ningxi."
Elsewhere, during lunch break, Chen Ningxi hurried downstairs and bumped into Lu Xingyan in the hallway.
"Manager Chen, have you finished reading my notes?"
