Chapter 317: Chapter 317: I Scorn to Compete with Anyone
Mrs. Sun didn’t have time to react before Sun Dongchen locked the door to the room.
Staring at the tightly shut door, Mrs. Sun sighed helplessly. Her son-in-law certainly had the looks, but he was nothing more than a useless coward who runs away from problems. Even an outsider like her couldn’t help but sneer at him.
Cheng Qiaobei entered the room with a face full of gloom, his brows furrowed tightly and the corners of his mouth drooping downward, every part of him radiating displeasure. Mrs. Sun, knowing well to be wary of him, awkwardly explained:
"Uh... I was busy in the kitchen and didn’t hear the doorbell ring."
Cheng Qiaobei shot a glance toward the stairs, where Sun Dongchen and Cheng Siluo lived upstairs, and asked:
"Where’s Sun Dongchen?"
Mrs. Sun, feeling guilty, instinctively looked toward the door behind him and braced herself to reply:
"Not at home."
Cheng Qiaobei didn’t even bother to expose her lie. Without hesitation, he turned and strode straight toward the tightly closed room.
"Hey... Qiaobei," Mrs. Sun panicked, attempting to block his path, but he didn’t give her the chance. Taking three steps in only two strides, Cheng Qiaobei reached the door and spoke through the wooden panel to the person inside:
"Sun Dongchen, you either come out here yourself, or I’ll come in and beat the hell out of you."
Mrs. Sun, fearing trouble, quickly moved to intervene. "Qiaobei, whatever it is, sit down and talk calmly. Don’t start a fight. There are kids in the house—it wouldn’t be good to scare them."
Upstairs, the nanny, hearing the commotion, had just reached the staircase landing when Mrs. Sun hurriedly stopped her.
"Mrs. Jin, go back to your room and watch the kids. There’s nothing here you need to be involved in."
"...Oh." Mrs. Jin retreated back upstairs.
Despite being separated by just one door, Sun Dongchen could still feel the oppressive tension in the air, as if it were suffocating him.
Cheng Qiaobei stood motionless, his presence radiating an overwhelming hostility. Suddenly, he spoke:
"To be a man and fall to the level you have—it’s just a dog that can’t stop eating crap."
Sun Dongchen wanted to retort but didn’t dare confront Cheng Qiaobei head-on.
He’d actually kill him!
"Hah..." Cheng Qiaobei sneered disdainfully, knocking on the door with his hand before continuing to mock him. "I’ve loosened your collar. Don’t sneak off to eat shit anymore."
Calling him a dog! Even with how much Sun Dongchen could tolerate, he couldn’t endure this.
Taking advantage of the door blocking them, he jumped to his feet and pointed at the man outside, shouting:
"Who the hell do you think you are to strut around here acting like a big shot? If Mom catches you coming in, she’ll kick you out like a tail-tucked mutt. Don’t be so full of yourself, Cheng Qiaobei. Let me spell it out for you—this family isn’t yours to rule over. Get lost; you’re not welcome here. And mark my words—keep it up and I’ll call the cops to report you for trespassing."
Cheng Qiaobei’s face turned cold as steel. In the next second, he kicked the door hard.
With a loud bang, the door flew open.
Standing too close, the door slammed into Sun Dongchen’s forehead, eliciting a pained scream as a goose egg-sized bump swelled visibly right in the center of his forehead, making him look both comical and pathetic.
"You—what are you doing?" Sun Dongchen stammered, trembling as he pointed at Cheng Qiaobei. "Let me remind you, last time Dad intervened for you, or I’d have had the police arrest you for real!"
Cheng Qiaobei scoffed. "You idiot. The peak of your life’s glory was getting beaten up by me."
Sun Dongchen, unwilling to back down, snapped, "Don’t act like you’re any better than me. You’re nothing but a bastard child; you’re no more respectable than I am. At least my family background is clean, while yours... You’ll never shake off the fact that your mom was just a mistress and kept woman."
"Watch that filthy mouth..." Cheng Qiaobei grabbed Sun Dongchen by the collar, dragging him down and throwing him onto the floor. His fists landed on his face like raindrops, strikes so fierce that Sun Dongchen couldn’t fend off even a fraction of them. He curled into a ball, covering his head and screaming for help: "Mrs. Sun, call—call someone! Call my mom and make her come back now... AH—!"
The punches rained down so relentlessly that the sounds of them landing on flesh were enough to make one’s heart pound with fear.
Mrs. Sun was utterly terrified, her hands trembling as she frantically tried to pull her phone from her pocket. Before she could dial, Cheng Qiaobei snatched it away and tossed it directly into the fish tank. His bloodshot eyes locked onto hers as he growled:
"Stay out of this."
"Uh..."
Mrs. Sun’s chest tightened as she sensed his sheer wrath. Without hesitation, she turned and hurried upstairs.
Cheng Qiaobei walked back into the room, casually shutting the door behind him. Sun Dongchen scrambled backward to the corner, horrified, while Cheng Qiaobei pressed forward, closer and closer, as if ready to devour him whole.
"Did I or did I not tell you that Ning Xi and his family are my absolute bottom line?" Cheng Qiaobei asked darkly.
Sun Dongchen nodded fearfully, "Y-Yes... you said that."
Cheng Qiaobei tightened his grip on his collar. "You knew it and still crossed it. Are you brain-dead or just asking for death?"
Sun Dongchen didn’t dare move, nor did he dare meet his gaze. "I—I... I don’t understand what you mean?"
Cheng Qiaobei’s eyes were full of scorn as he said, "If you could just admit to it, I might actually respect you as a man. But you’re a disappointment—you’ve never let me down in being nothing but a coward. You’re pathetic!"
At this point, nothing Sun Dongchen could say would make a difference. He could only hope Mrs. Sun would bring reinforcements soon, so at least this beating wouldn’t be in vain.
"You were the one who reported my father-in-law, weren’t you?"
Sun Dongchen’s eyes darted anxiously. "What are you talking about? I don’t know anything about that."
Cheng Qiaobei gave his face a condescending pat. "Denying it won’t help—I’ve already investigated everything."
Sun Dongchen protested, "I don’t know anything. Don’t you dare accuse me!"
"You’re stubborn to the end. Fine—don’t cry until you see the coffin." Cheng Qiaobei opened his phone’s call log. "Take a look. Is this number familiar to you? I’ve tracked him down. Got anything else to say?"
Sun Dongchen kept grasping for excuses. "You can’t blame me for that. If you want someone to blame, blame yourself."
"Blame me?" Cheng Qiaobei sneered. "You’re ridiculous. How was it my fault that you decided to report someone else? Did I force your hand?"
Since he’d already been found out, Sun Dongchen decided to stop pretending and confessed, "What gives you the right to act all superior? Kicking me out of the company and treating me like dirt—you think you’re such hot shit because Dad favors you? And because you’ve got a father-in-law who’s an official. Sure, Dad has to give him face, but if your father-in-law gets in trouble, it’ll drag you down too. Even if it doesn’t ruin you, it’ll stir enough chaos to mess up your family life. If it tarnishes the company’s reputation, I bet Dad wouldn’t keep letting you stomp around the workplace like you own it."
Cheng Qiaobei lit a cigarette, taking a slow drag before exhaling a cloud of white smoke. He stared at Sun Dongchen through the haze, listening as he rambled on:
"I just can’t stand you. You stole everything that was meant for Siluo. This family—you have no right to take it."
Cheng Qiaobei narrowed his long, sharp eyes. The cigarette between his fingers was slightly crumpled from the intensity of his grip. He’d seen through Sun Dongchen’s petty schemes before, but today he saw the depths of his vile nature. This man—he simply couldn’t stand anyone being better off than him.
"Sun Dongchen," Cheng Qiaobei said with a cold chuckle, "after all these years in the Cheng Family, there are some things you still don’t understand. Then again, maybe your IQ is only capable of grasping so much. Let me put it plain for you today—the Cheng Family’s legacy is meaningless to me. I don’t compete with anyone, but if I ever do, it’s never with someone as low as you.
I had originally intended to let you go, but you crossed the line—to the place I’ll never tolerate. Don’t blame me for showing no mercy."
