Chapter 316: Chapter 316: Why Do You Always Ask About Him?
Cheng Qiaobei gestured for Wei Lai to leave. Seeing his grim expression, Wei Lai exited the office and closed the door.
The ringtone on the phone went off one time after another, but Cheng Xiangheng still didn’t pick up, until the call ended automatically.
Cheng Qiaobei began to grow agitated. His persistent avoidance—did it mean he was somehow involved in this entire affair?
On the third attempt to dial Cheng Xiangheng’s number, the call finally connected.
"Mr. Cheng, where are you?"
The receiver was silent, Cheng Xiangheng seemed to be in a cramped space.
"What’s the matter?" Cheng Xiangheng countered.
Cheng Qiaobei said, "I need to discuss something important with you in person."
Although Cheng Xiangheng couldn’t see him, just a few brief words were enough to sense the anger radiating from Cheng Qiaobei.
"Whatever it is, just say it over the phone."
Cheng Qiaobei lashed out angrily, "Did you get someone to report Ning Xi’s father?"
"..."
The receiver was quiet for a few seconds, and then, in disbelief, Cheng Xiangheng asked, "Are you saying Ning Xi’s father got into trouble?"
Cheng Qiaobei’s gaze darkened. "Was it you?"
Footsteps in the receiver gradually echoed. It seemed Cheng Xiangheng had moved to a more open area.
The surroundings grew noisy, with honking cars and bustling street activity.
Cheng Qiaobei asked, "Where are you going?"
Cheng Xiangheng responded, "Meeting a client. Are you saying Ning Xi’s father really got in trouble?"
Through probing, Cheng Qiaobei had already ruled out his suspicion of him.
"Heh," Cheng Xiangheng laughed with a schadenfreude tone. "I always knew he’d get into trouble sooner or later. And you, Cheng Qiaobei, this is what happens when you don’t listen to me. Out of the three, no matter who you picked, your life would’ve been better than it is now. But look at you now—if your father-in-law really did get into trouble, don’t tell me you’re not regretting it."
Cheng Qiaobei’s pupils turned dark, emanating icy hostility. "How do you know for sure he’d get into trouble? Should I remind you, back then you went to him full of sincere intentions, only to be shoved out the door along with your things? Ha..."
In his life, Cheng Xiangheng had rarely been rejected. He could count the instances on one hand, and Chen Weichuan was one of them.
Recalling how Chen Weichuan had called security to throw him out, the man who once looked down on him was now his relative by marriage—wasn’t it just ironic?
"If you really had someone report him, aren’t you worried about implicating yourself?" Cheng Qiaobei asked.
Cheng Xiangheng mocked, "No need to state the obvious—why would I do something so reckless that hurts others while harming myself just as much? Instead of wasting time arguing with me, maybe you should focus on figuring out a solution for your father-in-law."
Cheng Qiaobei pressed again, "Back when you approached Ning Xi’s father, who else knew about it?"
Cheng Xiangheng replied, "No one, just me and your mom."
After he finished speaking, Cheng Xiangheng suddenly froze. Cheng Qiaobei hated more than anything else being forced as a child to call Zheng Rongxi ’mom.’
Cheng Qiaobei’s whole being radiated hostility, but in order to quickly determine who was pulling the strings in secret, he forced down his urge to explode and said:
"How many times do I have to say it? She’s not my mom. My mom is Ding Yuan."
"Alright, alright," Cheng Xiangheng replied, annoyed, "Nobody else knows about it."
Cheng Qiaobei asked, "Would Chairman Zheng have told anyone else?"
Cheng Xiangheng, eager to meet his business partner, said, "Let’s talk about this after I’m done. I’m busy right now."
"Wait," Cheng Qiaobei tried to stop him, but Cheng Xiangheng ended up hanging up.
He immediately called again, but the receiver buzzed with a busy tone. He had been blocked.
Although the conversation with Cheng Xiangheng ended on a sour note, he had achieved his objective.
Cheng Qiaobei walked out of the office and told Wei Lai, "I’m heading out for a bit."
Wei Lai quickly asked, "Have you finished signing all the documents?"
As he walked away, Cheng Qiaobei replied, "No."
Wei Lai grew anxious, "There are two urgent projects pending!"
But Cheng Qiaobei had already turned the corner, leaving behind only his voice, "I’ll handle them when I get back."
Wei Lai sighed and went back to his seat.
With a ding, the elevator arrived on the first floor.
Cheng Qiaobei strode across the lobby, dialing on his phone as he walked. The first number he tried was powered off, so he dialed a second.
When the call was answered, Cheng Qiaobei came straight to the point: "Manager Cheng, where’s Sun Dongchen?"
Cheng Siluo had always disliked Cheng Qiaobei. Not even addressing her properly on the call, she intentionally replied in a snide tone, "What manners you have—calling me without even addressing me as ’sis’?"
Sitting in his car with one hand on the steering wheel, a cold expression on his face, Cheng Qiaobei replied, "Between you and me, it’s best to keep things strictly professional as superior and subordinate. Any closer will only make me uncomfortable, and I know you find me insufferable too. Now, I just want to know—is Sun Dongchen home?"
Cheng Siluo furrowed her brows suspiciously, "Why do you keep asking about him?"
Cheng Qiaobei’s patience was wearing thin. He repeated once more, "Is he at home or not?"
Turning to glance at the man in the nursery, Cheng Siluo said, "Yes, he’s home. What’s the matter?"
Without saying another word, Cheng Qiaobei hung up.
Cheng Siluo stared at her phone screen, speechless. "Crazy, huh?"
Sun Dongchen was sitting beside the crib, his back turned to others in the room, furtively texting on his phone.
Sun Dongchen: What’s the update on the situation?
The prompt on the other end of the chat read "Typing..."
Grabbing her handbag, Cheng Siluo got up and prepared to leave. Hearing her move, Sun Dongchen immediately came out to see her off. "Honey, off to work? Bye bye."
Cheng Siluo said, "Oh, by the way, check whether it’s time for the baby’s vaccinations today."
Sun Dongchen grinned and cupped her face for a kiss. "These small tasks, leave them to me. You’re responsible for being beautiful like a flower and earning money to support the family—I’ll handle raising the child."
Cheng Siluo let out a light laugh. "Lip service is your talent. If only you worked at the company, I wouldn’t have to carry so much weight."
"I’m sorry, honey—my fault," Sun Dongchen said, putting his hands on her shoulders. "Go to work now."
It was only after watching her car disappear into the distance that Sun Dongchen picked up his phone again.
Cheng Qiaobei’s car stopped in front of a standalone villa—one of the places he least wished to step foot in.
Getting out of the car, he stood at the door and pressed the buzzer.
The housekeeper came out of the kitchen, spotted him on the security monitor, and hurried to inform Sun Dongchen.
"Sir, sir..."
Sitting on the sofa in the living room, phone in hand, Sun Dongchen put it down immediately. "What’s up?"
The housekeeper said, "Qiaobei is here—he’s standing outside. Should we let him in?"
Zheng Rongxi had made it clear that no one was to let Cheng Qiaobei in without her express permission.
When Sun Dongchen heard Cheng Qiaobei’s name, his teeth clenched in frustration. He snapped, "Don’t open the door for him."
The housekeeper nodded. "Got it."
Suddenly, feeling an urge to enjoy the sight of Cheng Qiaobei humbled, Sun Dongchen walked over to the monitor and watched the man on the screen. A smug, disdainful smile tugged at the corners of his lips.
"Look who’s finally fallen from grace."
But in the next second, Sun Dongchen’s eyes widened in shock. He watched as Cheng Qiaobei backed up a few steps, sprinted forward, and leapt, scaling the courtyard wall to enter.
"..."
Cheng Qiaobei knew someone was home—they simply wouldn’t open the door because it was him.
This wasn’t his home, nor was he welcome here.
Sun Dongchen instinctively retreated into the room. "Sun, Sun, he’s inside now! Tell him I’m not here."
