Chapter 303 The Harmful Male Fox

Chapter 303: Chapter 303 The Harmful Male Fox

Chen Ningxi arrived at work and immediately called Cheng Qiaobei. It must have been him who tattled—this man actually went to the "parents."

Seeing her number, Cheng Qiaobei hesitated for a moment, then strode out of his office and stopped at Wei Lai’s desk with a business-like demeanor, saying:

"Answer this call for me."

Wei Lai thought it was about declining a dinner meeting, but when she took the phone and saw the word "Wife" on the screen, she looked up at him with a puzzled expression that clearly asked, "What’s going on?"

Cheng Qiaobei cleared his throat. There was no way he could admit that he’d tattled to his mother-in-law and angered his wife, so he made up a serious-sounding excuse and said:

"I broke her new lipstick this morning. Tell her I’m in a meeting."

Lipstick is indeed quite significant to some women, especially a new one that hasn’t been used much.

Adhering to the spirit of "understanding is everything," Wei Lai decided to help him out this once.

As soon as the phone was up to her ear, she heard Chen Ningxi’s raspy voice firing off three soul-searching questions:

"Did you complain to my mom? What did you say? Did you call my dad too?"

The fast pace combined with her raspy voice made it a bit hard for Wei Lai to follow.

"Sis-in-law, it’s me, Wei Lai."

"Wei Lai?" Chen Ningxi paused briefly. Slightly embarrassed, she said, "Um... where’s he?"

Wei Lai looked at the man in front of her. Cheng Qiaobei threw her a pointed look towards the conference room.

She said, "Chairman Cheng is in a meeting."

"How convenient." Chen Ningxi clearly wasn’t buying it.

Wei Lai said, "He really is in a meeting."

Chen Ningxi knew that even if it was a lie, Wei Lai would follow his instructions.

"Wei Lai, could I trouble you to pass on a message?"

Wei Lai: "Sure, please go ahead."

Chen Ningxi said, "Tell him to call me back immediately after the meeting. Thank you."

Wei Lai said, "You’re welcome."

After hanging up, Wei Lai saw Cheng Qiaobei exhale in relief and asked, "This doesn’t seem like something as simple as lipstick-breaking?"

Cheng Qiaobei was still pretending to be composed: "It’s just about the lipstick."

But his reaction amused Wei Lai; who would’ve thought that the office’s "tough boss" was afraid to answer his wife’s calls. Noticing Wei Lai’s barely-contained smirk, Cheng Qiaobei, determined to salvage his image in front of an employee, said in an overly grave manner:

"I’m not afraid of her."

Wei Lai: "..."

There are some doubts that don’t need explanations, but once you explain them, you’re asking for trouble. Sure enough, the more you listen, the less you want to speak.

Throughout the morning, Chen Ningxi stayed busy. As lunch approached, the office finally quieted down.

Only then did she notice a bag of medicine placed on her desk. The packaging had the logo of a nearby pharmacy. She opened it to find cold medicine and anti-inflammatory cough tablets but couldn’t remember who had sent it.

Besides the corporate representatives who came to sign documents in the morning, there were only Lei Dechang and Dai Liang, both coworkers. Perhaps someone found out she was sick and bought it for her. She tossed the bag into the drawer without much thought.

Ye Yujun asked her to come home at noon, so Chen Ningxi grabbed her car keys and headed downstairs. At the corner of the staircase on the second floor, she crossed paths with Lu Xingyan, who looked like he had just finished his work and was heading to lunch.

"Manager Chen," Lu Xingyan greeted her first.

Chen Ningxi said, "Heading to lunch just now?"

Noticing her raspy voice, Lu Xingyan sounded surprised: "You got this bad overnight?"

Chen Ningxi chuckled, "It’s nothing, I’ll be fine soon."

She headed towards the parking lot. Lu Xingyan asked, "Manager Chen, aren’t you having lunch?"

Chen Ningxi: "No, I’ve got something to take care of."

Watching her leave, Lu Xingyan suddenly changed direction and headed out of the office compound.

He quickly entered a pharmacy and came back out within moments, his pockets visibly bulging. Just as Wang Qing finished lunch and bumped into Lu Xingyan.

"Hey, why are you just now going to eat?" Wang Qing asked.

Lu Xingyan said, "I had something to do, busy all morning."

When his phone rang, he reached into his pocket but accidentally pulled out the medicine bag, which fell to the ground.

Wang Qing picked it up, "You’re sick?"

"No." Lu Xingyan retrieved the medicine from her hand while answering the call and walked away.

Wang Qing muttered to herself, "Not sick, then why buy medicine?"

The medicine bag contained throat lozenges for a sore throat, but Lu Xingyan didn’t sound like he had any issues.

When Chen Ningxi arrived downstairs at her parents’ place, she didn’t rush to go up. She dialed Cheng Qiaobei’s phone again.

The ringing went on for a long time before it was answered. Chen Ningxi angrily said, "Oh, so you want a lesson, huh? How dare you," but before she could finish, the voice on the other end wasn’t Cheng Qiaobei—it was Ye Yujun.

The biological suppression her mother exerted stopped her in her tracks for two seconds.

"A lesson? You’re the one who needs a lesson! Didn’t I tell you not to bully Little Cheng?"

"Ma..."

Ye Yujun moved the phone slightly away from her ear, frowning with disdain: "Don’t ’ma’ me. When will you arrive?"

Chen Ningxi said meekly, "I’m already downstairs."

Ye Yujun: "Hurry up."

Chen Ningxi: "...Okay."

She put down her phone and let out a long sigh, "Ughhhh—"

Walking in, she saw Cheng Qiaobei on the balcony helping Ye Yujun water her plants. As she entered, she glared at him, but Cheng Qiaobei had on a perfectly clueless, "it has nothing to do with me" face.

Chen Ningxi pointed at him and mouthed: Wait and see!

Cheng Qiaobei slowly turned his head back, then smiled at Ye Yujun: "Ma, am I watering this correctly?"

Ye Yujun nodded, "Yes, add more water to the next pot."

Cheng Qiaobei: "Got it, Ma."

Every time she saw his sycophantic behavior, Chen Ningxi would get goosebumps all over and purse her lips in disdain, but Cheng Qiaobei was entirely unfazed. In fact, he seemed to enjoy himself thoroughly. She could never understand what kind of benefit came from immersing oneself in the "pleasing the mother-in-law" script.

That is until Ye Yujun poked her forehead with a feather duster, and Chen Ningxi finally understood the perks of his little "script."

"Is this how you treat people?"

Ye Yujun gripped the feather duster, her stance reminding Chen Ningxi of the time she was forced out of the chicken coop as a child.

Chen Ningxi said, "Ma, I didn’t..."

"Didn’t? Stubborn, huh?" Ye Yujun pointed at the phone on the table with the duster, "I heard everything just now. Still not admitting it?"

Chen Ningxi was at a loss for words. "Ma, I..."

Before she could respond, Ye Yujun interjected: "Alright, stop with the ’ma-ing,’ my ears can’t take it. I’m formally telling you today: you’re not allowed to bully Little Cheng. And also, go to the hospital later. Little Cheng cares about you—is that wrong? He wants you to rest—is that wrong?"

Chen Ningxi glanced slightly towards the balcony where Cheng Qiaobei stood, looking at her with a heartbroken expression.

So infuriating!!!!!!

This conniving fox of a man!!!

Noticing that she was distracted, Ye Yujun knocked on the table, "Listen carefully when I’m speaking."

Startled, Chen Ningxi straightened up: "Ma, I’m almost thirty years old. Why are you doing this?"

The man on the balcony rushed out in a hurry and snatched the feather duster from Ye Yujun’s hand: "Ma, don’t get mad. Ning Xi didn’t mean it; she just didn’t want me to worry."

Sometimes intervening makes things worse. Sure enough, his words only fanned the flames.

Cheng Qiaobei successfully ignited Ye Yujun’s long-concealed frustrations.

"That’s right! Chen Ningxi, you just go ahead and act up! Stir up drama over and over! You’re just like your father—never listen to reason. You and your dad are two peas in a pod! Everyone in the Chen Family is as stubborn as can be—a whole nest of them. If it’s not one thing, it’s another. I and Little Cheng must have some debt to your family in this lifetime; we’re here to repay it!"

Northeastern moms scolding people always come equipped with a formula and double buffs—first they scold you, then your dad, and finally everyone with the same surname.

Cheng Qiaobei: "..."

This could turn ugly! The scope has widened.
