Chapter 302: Chapter 302: Gagaga

Chen Ningxi turned to look at the person on the bed. Cheng Qiaobei’s eyes had faint dark circles, probably because he stayed up late helping her with physical cooling.

Although her head wasn’t as hot anymore, she still felt weak.

She planned to make breakfast, but when she entered the kitchen, she saw a pot of porridge on the stove.

Cheng Qiaobei worked overtime last night and came back very late. He made porridge and helped her wipe her body to reduce the fever. No wonder he’s still exhausted and hasn’t woken up.

The fever had subsided a bit, but her throat was hoarse, and swallowing still hurt.

After preparing breakfast, Chen Ningxi went to the bedroom to call him. Cheng Qiaobei, groggy with sleep, felt like he was hearing ducks quacking beside his ear—quack, quack.

He opened his eyes and saw Chen Ningxi but thought it must’ve been an illusion.

Coming out of the bedroom, he yawned and said, "Who told you to make breakfast? Why didn’t you wake me?"

Cheng Qiaobei always maintained a warm and clean appearance in front of her, but today he sat at the dining chair with messy hair and a disheveled look.

Chen Ningxi handed him chopsticks and said hoarsely, "You were so tired you could barely keep your eyes open. Just how ruthless do you think I am that I’d wake you up to make breakfast?"

"Your throat’s hoarse?"

"Quack." Yep.

"Haha..." Cheng Qiaobei couldn’t help laughing. "With my eyes closed, I feel like I’m talking to Donald Duck right now."

Chen Ningxi puffed her cheeks, "Annoying."

Her hoarse voice occasionally cracked, making it sound even funnier.

Cheng Qiaobei slowly chewed with his eyes closed and suddenly reached out his hand to her, saying, "Daisy, come here. Let me check if you’ve turned into roast duck yet."

Daisy is Donald Duck’s girlfriend.

Chen Ningxi leaned forward slightly. He pressed the back of his hand to her forehead, "You’re still a bit feverish. Take the day off and don’t go to work."

"I can’t today. The office invited an expert on submarine cable technology—a rare opportunity to meet an industry genius. I have so many questions I want to ask him."

Cheng Qiaobei kept his eyes closed and scooped a spoonful of porridge into his mouth. "...Why don’t you hire me as a translator? With your current voice, I’m worried the expert won’t understand anything and you’ll just keep quacking non-stop."

"It’s not that bad." Chen Ningxi said.

Cheng Qiaobei yawned again, "Can’t you rest?"

Chen Ningxi: "Nope."

Cheng Qiaobei: "If not, I’ll report you to Mom."

Chen Ningxi panicked, "You quack (dare)?"

"Don’t get worked up. When you’re anxious, you quack even more—now you’re exactly like Daisy." Cheng Qiaobei took a sip of porridge.

Chen Ningxi cleared her throat, "Cough, cough... does it sound better now?"

Cheng Qiaobei leaned his head to the side, lazily picked up a bite of side dish with his chopsticks. Under Chen Ningxi’s slightly surprised gaze, he guided it precisely into his mouth.

She waved her hand in front of his eyes, and Cheng Qiaobei opened them briefly, "So, still planning to have me report you or are you staying home to rest?"

Chen Ningxi clasped her hands together and pleaded with an adorable expression, "Today’s opportunity is truly once in a lifetime, Mr. Cheng..."

"Stop right there, with your voice rough like Lu Zhishen’s and trying to coax me?" Cheng Qiaobei opened his eyes briefly before closing them again. "No negotiations. My physical and mental state can’t handle it today. Seduction won’t work—try another day."

Chen Ningxi clicked her tongue, "I’m fine now."

Breakfast ended without Cheng Qiaobei allowing her to go to work.

Taking advantage of the moment Cheng Qiaobei went to the bathroom, Chen Ningxi stealthily changed her clothes, grabbed her bag, and dashed out the door.

When Cheng Qiaobei came out, he noticed the unusually quiet room and suddenly realized, "Ning Xi?"

The shoes by the door were gone, and Cheng Qiaobei sprinted to the balcony, flung open the window, and looked down just as Chen Ningxi walked out of the building.

He yelled, "Chen Ningxi—"

The person below instinctively looked up and replied, "Quack (What)—"

The snow-covered neighborhood was especially serene, and the sudden duck-call echoed through the air, an abrupt contrast.

Cheng Qiaobei’s mouth twitched, "..."

As her car exited the complex, Cheng Qiaobei immediately dialed Ye Yujun.

At that moment, Ye Yujun was following a video tutorial on the Eight Pieces of Brocade exercises. It was the first time Cheng Qiaobei had called her so early, making her worry they might’ve had a fight.

She answered quickly, "Cheng, calling this early, is something wrong?"

Cheng Qiaobei said, "Mom, Ning Xi is bullying me."

"Huh?" Ye Yujun froze.

Cheng Qiaobei continued, "Ning Xi had a fever last night—high fever. This morning, when her fever subsided slightly, she insisted on going to work. I told her to take the day off and rest at home. Isn’t that the right thing to do? Isn’t this for her own good?"

Ye Yujun nodded, "Yes, that’s for her own good."

"But she didn’t listen to me and waited until I went to the bathroom to sneak out of the house. Mom, Ning Xi is so infuriating." Cheng Qiaobei even pretended to clutch his chest, "I’m so mad it’s giving me chest pain."

Ye Yujun’s expression grew more and more disdainful—toward Chen Ningxi.

Other households had daughters complaining to the husband’s family, but in their case, the son-in-law was the one lodging complaints.

"Cheng," Ye Yujun felt helpless but needed to placate her son-in-law, "This isn’t your fault. It’s Ning Xi’s issue. You’re being considerate of her, caring for her, but she ran off anyway. I’ll call her later. Don’t be upset anymore."

Cheng Qiaobei said, "Mom, she had almost a 40-degree fever last night. I stayed up half the night wiping her down to bring it down. Now, the fever has gone down, but her voice is hoarse. Wouldn’t it be better for her to rest at home and recover before going back to work? It’s just a few days, isn’t that reasonable?"

Ye Yujun closed her eyes briefly. Cheng had done so much—he wasn’t in the wrong at all.

"Cheng, I’ll handle this. Don’t worry, I’ll sort it out."

Cheng Qiaobei hesitated, "Mom... don’t tell her I complained to you, okay?"

Ye Yujun: "Trust Mom. I get it. I’ll hang up now and call her."

Cheng Qiaobei heard the beep of disconnection, stared at the darkened screen, and casually went to the wardrobe to change his clothes.

Meanwhile, on the way to the office.

Chen Ningxi’s car stopped at a red light just as her phone rang.

Seeing Ye Yujun’s name flashing on the screen, Chen Ningxi immediately suspected Cheng Qiaobei had complained but also couldn’t quite believe he’d do something like that.

She pressed the Bluetooth button to answer, "Quack (Mom)..."

Ye Yujun didn’t understand, "Why do I hear ducks quacking?"

Chen Ningxi: "Quack (Mom), it’s not a duck. It’s me..."

Ye Yujun had to focus carefully to understand, "What happened to your throat?"

Chen Ningxi was about to blame the fever but swiftly realized she couldn’t say that, "No idea."

Ye Yujun said, "Come over during lunch break."

Chen Ningxi blinked her eyes, "Quack quack (Why)..."

"Hey, how can people understand you? Your throat sounds so bad. Go to the hospital!" Ye Yujun said.

"Quack (Mom), anything else?"

The light turned green, and Chen Ningxi started the car.

Ye Yujun said, "Don’t forget to come at noon."

Chen Ningxi: "Quack (Alright)."

"I’m hanging up. I can’t understand your quacking." Ye Yujun, annoyed, ended the call.
