Chapter 234: The Silly Child
Chapter 234: Chapter 234: The Silly Child
Cheng Qiaobei went to handle the discharge procedures. Chen Ningxi received a call from the institute. Everyone wanted to visit her in the hospital, but Chen Ningxi flatly refused.
Last night, when she was admitted, Chen Ningxi had instructed Cheng Qiaobei not to disclose her hospitalization to outsiders, nor to accept any visits or gifts.
Ye Yujun packed up Chen Ningxi’s hospital belongings, filling just one bag.
"You truly didn’t plan to stay long. Look at you with just this little stuff, like you’re playing house."
Chen Ningxi changed clothes, putting down the hospital gown, "If it were up to me, I wouldn’t have come last night. He insisted I get hospitalized for checks."
Ye Yujun praised Cheng Qiaobei, "Only Cheng could handle things so steadily."
Chen Ningxi said, "Mom, I need to criticize you. Mother-in-law, you love him very much, but dial it back a bit, and leave some love for me."
Ye Yujun replied helplessly, "Almost thirty, and you’re still acting like a kid who never grew up."
Chen Ningxi propped her chin up with her hands, saying childishly, "No matter how old, I’m always Mom’s baby."
Ye Yujun looked away in disdain, "Ugh..."
Chen Ningxi chuckled.
Cheng Qiaobei finished the paperwork and came in just in time to see Chen Ningxi’s silly expression. It reminded him of the little girl in pictures who used to chase chickens all over the yard.
Seeing him, Chen Ningxi quickly put her hands down, and her expression returned to normal.
When she wasn’t smiling, she seemed a bit like an unapproachable flower, but thinking about earlier, her smile deepened.
The three of them left the hospital room. Chen Ningxi tugged on his sleeve, making Cheng Qiaobei slow his steps, "What’s up?"
Chen Ningxi lowered her voice, "Forget what just happened."
Cheng Qiaobei feigned ignorance, "What happened just now?"
"Just..." She started to say but stopped, "You sly businessman."
Cheng Qiaobei whispered close to her ear, "Silly little kid."
Chen Ningxi’s eyelashes fluttered, and she pursed her lips, "Hmmph."
Cheng Qiaobei held her waist, "Love to hum, huh? Tonight I’ll let you hum all you want."
Chen Ningxi widened her eyes, "My mom’s in front. She’ll hear you."
Cheng Qiaobei grinned wickedly, "She can’t hear."
Lei Dechang and Dai Chi wouldn’t let her return to work, giving her two days off to rest at home.
There was more good news: Northeast Power published her heroic deeds on the national grid’s honor wall and nominated her for the Northeast Power’s Most Beautiful Power Worker award and other honors.
Chen Ningxi was completely taken aback by the impact her actions had made. Compared to the senior power workers, what she did seemed insignificant.
She graciously declined the honor from her superiors, but Secretary Lei gave her a talking-to. This honor didn’t just belong to her but also to the four other power workers who ensured the city’s power supply and the team that repaired the damaged power tower that night. The Danjiang Institute was awarded the Advanced Collective title, a prestigious accolade Danjiang Power hadn’t received in five years.
Chen Ningxi lay in bed, staring at the ceiling, unable to sleep in broad daylight.
Not working during work hours, lying at home, made her inexplicably anxious and hollow.
Cheng Qiaobei came in with a plate of fruit, seeing her wide-eyed, "It’s just two days off. Your eyes are so wide, even light bulbs would bow to you."
Chen Ningxi shifted her gaze, "Who wants time off when work gives life meaning?"
Cheng Qiaobei speared a piece of dragon fruit and brought it to her lips, "I don’t feel that way."
Chen Ningxi chewed forcefully, "Hmmph."
"Humming again?" Cheng Qiaobei raised an eyebrow.
Recalling his words — let you hum all you want tonight.
She immediately relented with a smile, "Hee hee... Don’t just feed me, you eat too."
Cheng Qiaobei speared a piece of mango, and as he brought it to her lips, Cheng Qiaobei said, "I like mangoes with a milky scent."
"There’s no such thing as milky mangoes." Chen Ningxi just bit down when he lifted her chin, retrieving the mango with his tongue. As he chewed, he said, "Hmm... Milky."
Watching him chew and swallow, her gaze traveled down his throat, where his slightly open collar revealed well-defined pectorals.
She strongly suspected he was intentionally seducing her.
Chen Ningxi slipped her hand into his collar, her fingertips brushing over his chest muscle, smiling alluringly. "Slept a night, what if I’m not tired?"
Cheng Qiaobei looked down at her and gave a roguish grin, "Why don’t you hum for me?"
Chen Ningxi started unbuttoning her nightgown. A handsome husband was like a perfect dessert, biting anytime was sweet.
Not just eye candy but also a treat, most importantly... completely satisfying.
His long fingers slid up her arm, interlocking their fingers above her head.
She had just eaten fruit, her lips carrying a fruity scent.
Mature bodies, especially sensitive after a brush with death the previous night.
Silky nightgown tight around her waist.
The room, in moments, was filled with spring romance.
Cheng Qiaobei cupped her face, kissing greedily, arms wrapped tightly around her as if to merge her completely into himself.
Suddenly, the memory of her falling into the water came to his mind, as if to tear her to pieces.
Cheng Qiaobei knelt, pulling his shirt forward to reveal his muscular torso.
A perfect V-shape, each bit of skin emphasizing his chiseled lines.
His lower abdomen’s hair was dense, and they said virile men are strong, something she definitively tested on Cheng Qiaobei.
They were like a little boat on the sea, tossed by waves until they reached calm waters, under an emerging moon.
Her petite form lay on his mountainous frame, hearing his powerful heartbeat as Cheng Qiaobei breathed heavily, saying, "Enough humming yet? If not, we’ll continue tonight."
Chen Ningxi was exhausted, her body limp, eyes shut, "Enough."
"Thirsty?"
Chen Ningxi murmured affirmatively.
Cheng Qiaobei rolled over to let her rest, then reached for the water glass on the nightstand, took a sip, and passed it to her lips.
She swallowed eagerly, water trickling from the corners of her mouth, drops gliding down her swan-like neck.
Chen Ningxi opened her eyes, her lashes wet and confused, her face radiant from recent affection. He leaned down to kiss her lips again.
If it weren’t for Lin Hanrui’s call, Cheng Qiaobei would have gone for another round.
Bringing the phone to his ear, his voice was raspy and restrained as he asked, "You have impeccable timing with this call, what’s up?"
