Chapter 233: Chapter 233: The Dutiful Son-in-law is Online

The conversation between the two woke the person on the hospital bed. Chen Ningxi saw her father’s back and called out, "Dad..."

"Ning Xi," Chen Weichuan turned around in a hurry and walked to the bedside, bending down as he looked at her with concern, "Is there anywhere you feel uncomfortable?"

Chen Ningxi said, "No, I’m fine. You sit, Dad."

Chen Weichuan said, "I still have to report on the disaster situation, so I came by quickly to check on you. Cheng just told me that the CT scan taken last night was looked over by the doctor, and they said everything’s fine. Knowing you’re okay puts my mind at ease. Your mom will be able to come over in a while. We didn’t tell her last night because we were afraid her high blood pressure would get aggravated from worrying at home alone."

"Why tell her? I’m fine. Hurry and call her, don’t let her come."

Just as she finished speaking, the door to the hospital room opened, and Ye Yujun rushed in. Chen Weichuan straightened up and said, "She’s fine, don’t worry."

"How can I not worry?" Ye Yujun circled around Chen Weichuan and came to the bedside, as Cheng Qiaobei said, "Mom, Ning Xi is really fine. The test results from last night are all out, and everything’s normal."

"Really," Ye Yujun could finally breathe a little easier after hearing Cheng’s words, "It’s good as long as she’s okay."

"Mom, sit here." Cheng Qiaobei pulled up a chair by the bed, and Ye Yujun sat down and gently caressed her forehead with eyes full of concern, "How are you? Are you hurting anywhere?"

Chen Ningxi gave a faint smile, "Mom, nowhere hurts. I’m fine, see? I’m doing well."

"If you were fine, you’d not be lying in the hospital." Ye Yujun took out a thermos from her bag, "I made some sea cucumber porridge for you this morning, you haven’t eaten yet, have you?"

Chen Ningxi said, "Mom, I just woke up; I can’t eat right now."

"Eat later when you get up," Ye Yujun said, carefully putting the lid back on and placing it on the bedside table, "How did you end up in the water?"

"Mom, it’s a long story. I don’t want to talk about it. I feel a bit tired and want to sleep a bit more." Chen Ningxi refrained from saying anything to avoid causing her worry. Cheng also understood and handed over a peeled apple, "Mom, have an apple."

Ye Yujun took it, "You’ve been up all night; it must’ve been hard. I’ll stay here during the day so you can go back and change clothes and rest for a bit."

Cheng Qiaobei said, "I don’t need to go to the office today. I’ll stay here and look after Ning Xi."

Chen Weichuan glanced at his watch again, "Yujun, I still have to report on work. You stay here with the child."

Ye Yujun looked at Chen Weichuan, wanting to say something but stopping, "...Go about your work."

Chen Weichuan said, "Ning Xi, Dad is leaving."

Chen Ningxi looked at him, "Mm, go ahead. I’m okay. Don’t worry about me."

Cheng Qiaobei went out with him to see him off. As soon as the door closed, the people inside the hospital room started to complain, "His daughter’s life almost ended, yet he’s still going to report. This job of his is more important than us, mother and daughter. Let him be with his work then."

"Mom," Chen Ningxi nudged her hand, "My dad is exhausted enough. Why are you blaming him? The village he was rescuing had over three hundred households all swept by the flood. They used speedboats to transport them household by household. Look at his soaked pants and shoes; he came to see me as soon as he was done without even changing his clothes."

Ye Yujun sighed, and her tone softened too, "Ah... Can I really blame him? At his age, he’s still at the frontline rescuing people. What if something happened to him? What would we do? I worry over him too, you know?"

Chen Ningxi laughed, "If you’re worried, just go home and get him a clean set of clothes and shoes, deliver them to his workplace."

"Like you need to remind me. I’ve already sent them." Ye Yujun said, "Before coming to you, I first detoured to his office. I had the clothes and shoes delivered to his lounge by the little errand boy."

Chen Ningxi said, "Mom, you are absolutely clever among women."

Ye Yujun’s face lit up with a smile, "Your father annoys me, but you make me laugh. You really do side with him."

Chen Ningxi said, "Not that I side with him; I’m on the same team as you."

Ye Yujun opened the thermos lid, serving a bowl of sea cucumber porridge, "Oh really? When we’re usually just watching, it seems like that, but you reveal your true self at critical moments."

"Mom, I’m hungry." Chen Ningxi braced herself with her elbows and sat up. Ye Yujun helped prop the pillow behind her back, "I’ll eat by myself."

In the hallway, as Chen Weichuan walked, he said, "You see, after I left, your mom blamed me. I know what she’s thinking, that I’m not taking care of my wife and child and just busy with things outside."

Cheng Qiaobei said, "Dad, if it were before, I definitely wouldn’t understand you, but last night I watched as Ning Xi stood on the electrical tower, giving others the chance of survival over and over. It was incredibly moving. We’re all just ordinary people, but at life-and-death moments, you guys are amazing. Ning Xi and I understand you, and after all these years, Mom understands your hardships even more than we do. But everyone has moments when they want to vent, and she was upset out of worry for Ning Xi. Besides, looking at your wet pants and shoes, Mom will definitely blame you for not taking care of yourself."

Chen Weichuan paused for a moment, looking down, "I came too hurriedly, didn’t have time to change."

The elevator arrived, and Chen Weichuan said, "You go back; no need to see me off."

Cheng Qiaobei waited until the elevator doors shut before turning back to head towards the ward.

As he was halfway through the door, he heard Ye Yujun say, "You better not be so ruthless in the future. Luckily Cheng was there. If he hadn’t rescued you, what would your dad and I have done? No more of this risky stuff; my heart can’t take it."

Chen Ningxi took a sip of porridge and replied vaguely, "Got it. Mom, don’t say anymore; my head’s starting to hurt again."

Ye Yujun’s attitude immediately shifted 180 degrees, quickly leaning in concernedly, "Why, why is it hurting again? Let’s get the doctor to check again; if it’s not okay, let’s get you transferred."

"Mom, I can’t handle listening to people talk too much right now. If I hear a lot, my head hurts." Chen Ningxi couldn’t keep up the act, bursting into laughter.

"Hmph... You, child, are you saying I’m noisy?" Seeing her daughter’s spirit restored, Ye Yujun’s worries relaxed.

Cheng Qiaobei stepped inside, and upon hearing the sound, Ye Yujun turned her head, "Cheng, come and have breakfast too."

She got up and served a bowl for Cheng Qiaobei, "I saw the breakfast you bought; it’s already cold. Don’t eat it. I’ll go home and cook lunch later."

"Mom, no," Chen Ningxi called to stop her, "I’ll be discharged in a while, so no need to cook."

"Leaving after just one night? Do you take this for a hotel?" Ye Yujun stopped her, "You need to stay for further observation."

Chen Ningxi sat up, "Look, I’m lively and energetic. No need for observation. If I’m cooped up here any longer, they’ll send me to the Sixth Hospital."

The Sixth Hospital, also known as Danjiang City Sixth Mental Hospital.

"Aiya... I can’t even get mad at you anymore." Ye Yujun saw Cheng Qiaobei, "Cheng, in this family, you’re the most obedient."

Cheng Qiaobei smiled, the most dutiful son-in-law was online.

"Come, Cheng, have another bowl."

The obedient son-in-law offered up the bowl with both hands, "Mom, your porridge is just too delicious."

Chen Ningxi watched from the side, her face full of disdain, "Bootlicker!"

Ye Yujun turned back to glance at her, "What did you say? Don’t bully him."

Chen Ningxi widened her eyes, "Mom, I am your own daughter, and I’m still a patient. How could you speak for him?"

Ye Yujun placed the filled bowl of porridge on the table, "You’re about to be discharged, so how are you still a patient?"

Chen Ningxi: "..."

Cheng Qiaobei, holding the bowl, turned back and gave Ningxi a cheeky eyebrow raise.
