Chapter 1235: Chapter 1235: Personally Coming to Ask for Marriage
The rain finally poured down, brewing under the oppressive dark clouds.
Soon, a thin layer of water vapor rose in the air, like clouds ascending.
The Cheney Residence, shrouded in this haze, resembled a celestial realm on a mythical Yau platform.
The plants around were withered, and the rain outside made a loud noise, "pitter-patter."
The damp soil exuded a fresh, earthy fragrance.
Sylvan Cheney finished another cigarette between his fingers.
He closed his tired eyes and tossed the cigarette butt into the ashtray.
The empty Cheney Residence was so quiet that you could hear your own breathing.
The rain outside grew heavier, unusually so for winter, fogging up the windows with a blurry white layer.
Outside the Cheney Residence, a black car stopped.
Charles McIntosh, holding an umbrella, got out and walked toward the living room.
"Sir, the people from the court will be here soon," Charles whispered.
"I know," Sylvan Cheney said, lifting his hand to glance at his watch—right on time.
Charles did not say much more, it must be... saying anything more would be futile. Sylvan’s decisions, he knew, were always well considered.
"Sir, I’m afraid Yacob Harry might arrive before the court officials."
"It seems I wasn’t clear enough with him."
The corners of Sylvan’s lips held a detached curve, his face void of warmth, his eyes cold and bleak.
"Mr. Cheney, I am here with you," Charles stood respectfully at attention.
No matter what, he would stand by Sylvan, loyal as ever for over twenty years.
The vast living room was silent, no longer vibrant with people.
A few months ago, Sylvan had dismissed everyone, only Butler Santana refused to leave and insisted on staying.
The living room’s murals and vases remained, but it was no longer the bustling Cheney Residence.
Charles thought this might be the quietest the Cheney Residence had ever been, possibly... forever.
Over the years, Charles frequented the Cheney Residence, but this was his first encounter with such a lifeless mansion.
Only endless trees, flowers, and rockeries. No people.
When the cause of this disaster started, Charles couldn’t figure out.
"Mr. Cheney, when Yacob Harry comes later, if you still refuse the marriage alliance, I fear this time he won’t be so amicable and will present the evidence directly to the court."
Joan Harry fancied Sylvan Cheney quite a bit.
Due to her personality, she never confessed her feelings, but loved him silently.
Yacob Harry and Cora Jorney were well aware, and with Sylvan’s immense power in Landon and the flourishing Cheney Group, it made for an ideal union of strong parties.
Last year, they had personally visited to propose this marriage.
Sylvan Cheney refused.
But Yacob Harry wouldn’t let it go and repeatedly brought up the marriage alliance.
Just as Sylvan was preparing to refuse again and take action, Yacob Harry struck first and revealed a significant secret about the Cheney Group from years ago—
It turns out that the Cheney funds were once tight, and Qiana Childe had conducted a shady smuggling deal with a foreigner. Though brief, it had reaped considerable profits.
Moreover, that foreigner had kept depositing money into the Cheney account as per the contract.
Qiana Childe had strived to cover up this illegal past until she succumbed to depression and jumped into a lake.
At first, Sylvan was uninformed until he personally audited the accounts and uncovered the clues.
But having committed illegal acts, the Cheney Group couldn’t cleanse its reputation.
Over the years, Sylvan had already destroyed the evidence and severed the transactions.
