Chapter 922: Chapter 574 Black Prison

Such a large proportion of Half-Elves and Elves, alongside their much longer lifespans than Humans, meant that Deep Forest Valley’s customs and most political decisions were in the hands of Elves and Half-Elves rather than Humans.

Thus, the residents here, be they Elves, Half-Elves, or Humans, all resided in tree towers and houses with an Elven style, most of which were far off the ground. When the area was flooded with lake and river waters, they naturally remained unaffected. Instead, the scene became one where people lived above the water and fish swam below their feet—a spectacle unique to Deep Forest Valley that individuals, particularly leisurely Half-Elves and Humans, could enjoy. They would casually cast their fishing rods from their doorsteps, simply for pleasure and not out of hunger, since they mostly used barbless hooks. For them, fishing wasn’t the goal; rather, nurturing their temperament and playfulness with nature’s creatures was their true joy—an approach to life misunderstood by those not from Deep Forest Valley.

It was only the ordinary citizens of Deep Forest Valley who could afford such tranquility; every time the floods came, the extraordinary residents would brace for battle.

The Valley Lord, Serlemon Ulas, would inevitably join forces with his brain trust, the Magic Master, the renowned Oracle of Deep Forest Valley, Master Laurantice. Together, with the elite warriors, the Sword of the Deep Forest, they would head deep into the forest to the north of Glaemrei River, to a place seldom reached by ordinary valley denizens—Black Prison.

Carved directly into the dense forest was a long, black chasm, its twisted, char-black trees serving as its signature. According to detections by the Elf Royal Court and Valley Mages, this rift was once a prison, confining a powerful Evil Deity that governed Withering and Decay.

However, to this day, it remained unclear whether the rift was an earlier form of the dead God of Degeneration and Corruption, or another evil entity altogether.

Nor was it clear whether that evil was still imprisoned, because the Elf Royal Court had, over time, dispatched numerous powerful Exploration Teams into this seemingly bottomless fissure, all led by strong Quasi-Legendary and Legendary leaders.

These Exploration Teams either vanished without a trace—neither living nor dead, and even the Complete Resurrection Spell and Wish Spell proved useless—or a mere few strong individuals emerged, all without exception in a state of madness, lashing out in slaughter against everything around them, including their own kin.

What could now be confirmed was that Black Prison was much deeper than it appeared and was connected to an Evil Deity or Dark Spirit, contaminating the minds of those who entered.

Creatures that wandered near this part of the forest and stayed too long often fell into the same frenzied state of slaughter.

For this reason, Deep Forest Valley had established a quarantine zone here, sending people to drive those forest creatures away and prevent them from entering.

Over time, those creatures naturally began to avoid the area.

But during rainy seasons, their method was rendered ineffective, as the spreading river waters would follow the terrain all the way here, forming a massive, temporary river channel, pouring the river water into Black Prison, and with it, an abundance of aquatic creatures.

This black rift resembled the cavernous maw of a greedy monster that could never be satisfied by the water and life it devoured, never showing signs of being sated, causing one to wonder if it led directly to Hell.

Connection to Hell was, of course, unlikely, but to a vast, unimaginable Dark Domain, it was possible.

The Elite of Deep Forest Valley stood guard, not to stop the inundating waters but to prevent an indescribable terror from emerging from within.

Fortunately, true to its name, this place was a great prison that always only allowed entrance and not exit.

If it were left to Humans, a species with brief lives and short memories, they might have long ignored it.

But the Elves and Half-Elves, with their lengthy memories, were different. Many of the warriors in the Sword of the Deep Forest had witnessed the madness of those who returned from within, and their years of standing guard near Black Prison had made them acutely aware of the strangeness of the place and how it insidiously eroded the mind.

Staying too long invariably led to irritability, paranoia, suspicion, anxiety, and more.

Thus, they operated a rotating guard schedule—no warrior could serve here for more than three months in a year, and every ten days, they underwent a mental health assessment. If any change in mental state was noted, they were immediately transferred away, never to serve here again.

It was because of all these reasons that Deep Forest Valley, despite years of calm, maintained a vigilant posture from top to bottom, daring not to slacken for even a moment.

This vigilant spirit allowed them to detect, at the first instance, something unusual coursing toward Black Prison.

"What is that?"

"That’s a dark area created by magic."

"Something’s not right, very not right. There is a strong dark presence within the darkness, some evil entity attempting to enter Black Prison. Quickly, go and inform the Lord and the Oracle."

"Mages, prepare the Daylight Spell, tear through the darkness, and see what’s hidden inside that has covered itself in the Dark Arts in the middle of the night."

Elves and Half-Elves both have a faint glow and Dark Vision, allowing them to see great distances even on moonless nights, not to mention now, when the moonlight was strong.
