Chapter 638: Chapter 481 Seeing but Not Touching_1
"My lord, the spatial dimensions are incorrect," a gnoll named Kunte leaned in to inform Gaven.
He was the leader of the gnoll construction crew, a level-five gnoll sorcerer, who not only possessed the Mending Magic Spells but was also an excellent excavator and builder.
"Search, continue the search, wall by wall for me, crevice by crevice, don’t miss any suspicious spots," Gaven waved his hand and commanded.
When the gnolls said the spatial dimensions were off, it was certain that there was a hidden chamber.
Their sense of space was vastly different from that of humans; they didn’t need to measure, as by simply using their eyes, they could distinguish whether there were discrepancies in the structure and layout of two storeys, much like how birds can tell whether a narrow gap is suitable to fly through.
In this respect, these gnolls were professional, swiftly taking out a small pointed hammer from their specialized gnoll tool kits and tapping it down from time to time, crawling on top to listen.
Using their ears, these gnolls could tell how thick the wall was, whether there were other cavities behind it, and roughly how large the space was.
Although this was an innate ability, it was rather specialized; to be truly useful, it took specialized training and a wealth of experience.
Without a doubt, these gnolls were experts in this field, and it wasn’t long before they discovered something. Accompanied by a creaking sound, a secret door was opened.
Without waiting for the gnolls to call him over, Gaven was the first to rush over, "This is..."
He saw a rectangular standard room, but the walls were adorned with rusty shackles and ropes, and in the furthest part was an iron chair fixed in place, with dust-covered leather straps and all manner of tools that clearly weren’t for normal use, filling up an entire shelf.
"This is a torture chamber. Why would there be such a secret room beneath an inn?" Anna, following behind Gaven, asked in disbelief.
Before Gaven could reply, another creaking noise came from nearby, and a new secret door opened. One larger and one smaller mummified bodies tumbled out.
Anna briskly walked over and quickly examined the two bodies, then confidently stated, "Both of the deceased are female, the older one around thirty years of age, the younger around fourteen or fifteen. Both starved to death, dead for about three years, probably after the Laughing Bandit Tavern was abandoned. Sir, do you think, could they be the Weeping Witch? Their cries and wails before their death made the villagers mistake them for ghosts, or perhaps, did they transform into vengeful spirits still full of anger?"
"They’re not them," Gaven shook his head, "Before their deaths, the Weeping Witch had already appeared. And last night, you saw the phantom with your own eyes. Did you sense any odor of death on her? Or negative energy? They’re just two bodies that died unjustly. It seems that the former owner of the Laughing Bandit Inn wasn’t as clean as the villagers of Anfield thought; he was likely engaging in crimes of theft and possibly more sinister deeds."
"There’s another one over here," another gnoll called out.
Just beside this secret detention room, another secret room was opened.
This room was the largest, equivalent to the sum of the previous two secret rooms, with a giant solid wood bed in the center draped with a silk chiffon canopy, and the surrounding walls were covered with various tapestries and paintings.
Anna only peeked into the room before jumping back out as if she was a startled rabbit, her face flush with embarrassment, "How could... how... how could there... be... be... such a shameless room set up? Mr. Gaven, these... these... these indecent things... they... they... they’re tools used by the devil to lead people into depravity, they shouldn’t exist in this world... they... they... they should all be burned."
Due to her embarrassment and nervousness, her stuttering problem kicked in, worse than usual.
The tapestries and paintings all depicted extremely explicit erotic acts. Even Gaven, who had seen much of the world, felt embarrassed all of a sudden, not to mention the Maiden Priestess, who had never seen such a display before. She felt tainted, as if she was about to combust, because the images from the tapestries kept vividly rolling through her mind.
Gaven spoke with conviction, "I share the heavens with neither filth nor evil. Wait outside for me, I’m going to see if there are more evil things hidden inside. I sense Magic Fluctuations in there."
"Sir, you... you... be careful... be... be... if there’s... there’s... any trouble, call us immediately," Anna hesitated at the door, too embarrassed to follow inside.
Gaven then inspected the seductive tapestries and paintings with a critical eye.
One can’t deny that the person who arranged this room had impeccable taste in aesthetics. All the decorative items were not only erotic but also artistically beautiful. They would probably fetch a good price from someone with special proclivities.
Gaven’s gaze finally rested on a painting of a noblewoman. Among all the paintings in the room, it was definitely the most modest, at least she was fully clothed, yet it was the most alluring because its creator had perfectly captured the beauty of obscurity, fully igniting one’s voyeuristic desire, making one wish they could dive into the painting to peer behind the misty veil of the thin gauze.
The longer Gaven stared at the portrait, the stronger his desire to pry became.
