Chapter 479: Chapter 417 Knight Charge Divine Artifact_1
"That’s good, I’ll give you a ten-day buffer period to reorganize the situation in your territory," said Lord Virginia understandingly, "By then, the curtains in Dragon Oak Territory and the Dragon Oak Portal might be affected. Hmm, the former has little to do with the Dragon Oak Mother Tree, so the likelihood of influence is smaller, but the latter relies on the Dragon Oak Mother Tree and will definitely be affected, resulting in a temporary shutdown."
"You have considered everything thoroughly. I’ll return to Dragon Oak Territory as soon as possible."
Connection between Weizemay Manor and the Dragon Oak Mother Tree wasn’t that close yet.
But Dragon Oak Territory was almost fused with the Dragon Oak Mother Tree; there was much to separate.
This was actually good, at least it presented an opportunity for Dragon Oak Territory to exercise its independence. After all, a plane separated the two, and there was too great a likelihood of accidents happening.
Now, taking the initiative to separate for a while was certainly better than being isolated by an enemy unprepared, facing even more complicated predicaments.
"Is there anything else? If there aren’t any more issues, I’ll begin," said Lord Virginia.
"No more for now, go ahead!" Everything had come too suddenly, Gaven hadn’t yet weighed and pondered the matter seriously. Nevertheless, there was still a ten-day buffer, so everything could be dealt with one by one.
Boom boom boom!
With a loud rumble, the Dragon Oak Giant Claw started moving again.
When it was still, the plane barrier was hidden, as if it had fully entered the material plane.
Once it moved, the plane barrier immediately became visible, the two showed a distinct refraction effect, misaligned and distorted—just like a hand submerged in water.
The Divine Root under the Dragon Oak Giant Claw had completely become a dead snake, with no need to consider its reaction. What she needed to confront was still the force of the plane barrier.
Plane barriers were intangible yet existed in reality.
They maintained the distances between planes and their independence.
It’s a very arcane concept. It could be infinitely far, so distant that both sides were separated by endless space, endless universes.
Yet both could also be infinitely close, close to the thickness of a piece of paper, a membrane—close enough to see each other.
This distance, near or far, depended only on one thing—energy.
Energy strong enough could often penetrate plane barriers, linking two places together.
The simplest was actually the energy to transport, like a key, easily opening a door on the plane barrier.
The Dragon Oak Mother Tree couldn’t use transportation energy, and the transportation energy conjured by Lord Virginia wasn’t sufficient to support the ingress and egress of something as massive as the Dragon Oak Mother Tree, not even a single giant claw.
So the only option was the simplest, most brute-force method.
A massive amount of energy concentrated at a single point, to pierce through it.
Coming in required energy, and retreating, especially with such a colossal object, also needed energy—the plane itself had a certain adhesiveness.
Under the pressure of the plane barrier, a rain of corruption began to fall from the sky, a pelting down of all manner of defiled substances.
Without control, the very structure of the Divine Root became somewhat flaccid. At the slightest external pull, it immediately began to come apart.
Left with no choice, Gaven and Lord Virginia joined forces to drive the power of the Dragon Oak Mother Tree, forcing some of the Corruption Divinity back into the Divine Root, making it a complete entity once more, with significantly increased firmness and resilience, allowing most of its body to endure crossing the plane barrier, dragging it into the Fairy Wilderness.
Then the Dragon Oak Mother Tree stamped it down with one claw into the hollow that accommodated its claw, with the claw itself slightly bent and pressing on the Divine Root.
It looked very much like a Giant Dragon stepping on its prey.
Before the Dragon Oak Giant Claw retracted the Divine Root back into the Fairy Wilderness, Gaven emerged from within and returned to the material plane.
The main disaster was removed, but there was still a pile of follow-up work he needed to do.
As the Dragon Oak Giant Claw pulled back the Divine Root, the plane barrier healed itself, undifferentiated and seamless, with no sign of damage, and the silhouette of the Dragon Oak Mother Tree gradually faded until it disappeared completely.
Both planes returned to their normal separation.
If not for the huge pit left on the ground where the Dragon Oak Mother Tree had struck the Divine Root, as well as the abundance of leftover corruption, one could almost wonder if everything that had happened was just an illusion.
The knights summoned by Lady Strategy were still roaming and fighting at will on the battlefield, but she herself had already halted, her gaze resting on Gaven.
The next moment, she appeared, man and horse together, at Gaven’s side, a dreadful oppressive force bearing down on him.
Last time they met, it was only a piece of her soul that possessed Zalanda.
This time, she had directly infused a vast amount of Divine Nature into Zalanda’s body, transforming him into a vessel capable of housing a great deal of Divine Power, a Saint in form.
Especially the immense faith gathered from Darama was directly pouring into Zalanda’s body, not yet having the opportunity to be delivered back to her true form.
Gaven believed that even if she left, taking most of the Divinity and Divine Power with her, she would still bestow immense benefits to Zalanda—not just anyone can serve as the vessel for a True God’s soul.
"Offer your faith, and I will grant you the complete status of the Chosen," said Lady Strategy, looking down from above at Gaven.
She felt much larger up close than she did from afar, sitting astride her warhorse, overt four meters tall.
Both she and her horse seemed to have undergone an Enlarge spell, enlarging an entire size up.
"It is my honor, my lady," said Gaven with a bow, speaking without humility or arrogance, "But please allow me to decline this honor."
The Red Knight’s star-shaped, multicolored eyes visible outside his helm betrayed no emotion, "Reason?"
"To honor you by carrying out strategy and executing plans, whether I have the status of the Chosen or not, will not change this point. But with that status fully bestowed upon me, I would carry your mark, becoming passive in some matters, descending to a lower state," Gaven answered truthfully, "The way of war is, after all, one of feint and reality. Why not let me serve as your hidden piece, to be even more effective?"
Persuading a person starts with their likes.
To persuade a god, their divine office is the best approach.
After listening to Gaven’s explanation, the Goddess of Strategy fell into a brief silence, her starry eyes flickering repeatedly as if weighing the benefits of Gaven’s plan against becoming one of her Chosen. Which offered her greater advantage?
However, the calculation yielded the same result as before.
The young man before her was entangled in a web of fate.
Even she couldn’t see through it or predict events related to him.
Like the battle today, it wasn’t part of her plan.
But the benefits it brought were clear.
A resounding victory over an Evil God was a glorious honor for her.
Not to mention, she could vividly sense an influx of new followers growing before her many worshippers.
She could start preparing to Ascend her Godrealm and formally join the ranks of the gods.
Refusing a deity made Gaven somewhat uneasy.
But that was it.
For one, he had a deep understanding of the Goddess of Strategy, knowing her rationality far outweighed her emotions. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have the opportunity to stand there refusing her.
Secondly, he realized even more profoundly his value to her. To put it nicely, he was a Fate Reshaper, but crudely, a source of turmoil.
Wherever he went, he was bound to cause upheaval and war—because he wanted to make changes in the area, which inevitably conflicted with local forces. Typically, these conflicts were irreconcilable and ultimately led to war.
The benefit he provided to a war-planning True God was self-evident.
She likely grasped this fact too, hence her attempt to grant him full Chosen status.
But this status could offer him short-term benefits, yet from a long-term perspective, it would affect his plans.
Gaven’s aim was the Magic Goddess’s Chosen.
Though dual or even multiple Chosen statuses weren’t unheard of in Felen, they were exceedingly rare, countable on one hand.
Such statuses typically arose from an understanding between the gods, or sharing the same goals and objectives.
Should he gain the Magic Goddess’s Chosen status, the Goddess of Strategy’s offer would be met with different rhetoric and attitude.
"You make some valid points," granted the Goddess of Strategy, acknowledging Gaven’s words, "but for merit to go unrewarded is not the Path of War..."
Her star-shaped eyes, aglow with colorful light, enveloped Gaven as if seeing through him, "You’ve got a mount, shield, armor, and a mid-range weapon. What you lack now is a lance for charging, so I will bestow upon you my spare lance."
With a gesture, the Goddess of Strategy materialized a heavy knight’s lance in her hand and casually tossed it to Gaven.
The Victory Pledge, once the Red Knight’s lance, was imbued with Divine Power—this was a +5 lance.
Fearless Charge (Special Ability)—When you charge, you will create a 20-meter radius Aura of Valor; all creatures within the aura will not be governed by fear, be it natural or magical. Those under the aura’s influence gain a +5 to defense deflection bonus.
Aura of Fear (Special Ability)—When you charge, there is a chance your enemies will be overcome by fear, retreat from battle, with an aura covering a radius of 20 meters.
Aura of Valor (Special Ability)—When you charge, the Aura of Valor will envelop the knights beside you, giving them a heroic boost. Their vitality will be enhanced, and all allies gain 2D10 temporary life force. The effect covers a 20-meter radius and lasts for a number of minutes equal to your Charisma modifier.
This was undoubtedly the holy grail for knightly charges.
What is the biggest fear of a knight’s charge?
It’s not about how strong the enemy is, but rather the knight’s bravery and the presence of a resolute, do-or-die attitude.
The greatest fear comes when approaching the enemy’s lines, and the charging knights face spear formations or enormous opponents and fall into panic, making hasty decisions.
Such as pulling hard on the reins or changing the direction of the charge.
Either action is fatal on the battlefield. Without the enemy lifting a finger, you could end up killing yourself or your comrades first.
With the Aura of Valor, at least those in your vicinity and behind need not worry about that.
And not to mention the +5 defense deflection bonus, a kind of magic interference that causes enemy attacks to deviate. A +5 deflection could turn many potentially fatal strikes into non-lethal ones—like a spear thrust at the throat ending up on the face or shoulder instead.
What’s the main tactical objective of a knight’s charge?
It’s not to kill—that is secondary.
The primary goal is to break the enemy’s strongest point to intimidate, instill fear, and create opportunities for a sweeping attack.
The Aura of Fear undoubtedly enhances this capability.
The Aura of Valor, on the other hand, strengthens a knight’s vitality. It acts as a shield of life—when attacks land, the shield’s power is consumed first before the knight’s.
With the three auras combined, even a farmer atop a nag would immediately transform into a valiant cavalryman—whether they survive the charge is another matter.
He had the holy grail for knightly charges, but he had no knights!
