Chapter 336: Chapter 277: Luring the Enemy In_1
As always.
Looking out from the observation port, one couldn’t see a thing.
Because what surged forward first was the pitch-black mist.
The deliberately kept large bonfires outside the granary were swallowed up in an instant, as if consumed by the belly of a monster.
This was certainly not an ability of ordinary fog but darkness formed by magic.
The common people, who didn’t know much about vampires, thought that this kind of mist was an ability all vampires had.
But the Holy Warriors knew otherwise.
While vampires did possess the ability to transform into mist, they certainly wouldn’t carry with them such a wide-ranging dark fog wherever they went.
This must be a unique ability of the Dwarves Vampire.
Because adult Dwarves Elves naturally possessed spell-like abilities to perform Dark Arts.
When they turned into dark beings, it was likely that such abilities would be deeply enhanced, giving rise to what lay before their eyes.
Just an ordinary Dwarves Vampire was capable of creating a dark fog that enveloped an entire village.
The legend of the sealed Dwarves Elf Vampire Lord, who could cloak a city or half a country in mist, now seemed believable.
The direction of the dark fog’s advance was resolute, aimed at the granary and completely disregarding the church.
First, the difficulty of breaching such a sacred sanctuary was far greater than that of the granary, especially when the Sanctum’s distinctive sheen flickered above; the dark fog dared not come too close, and the effect of the Sanctum was amplified in such sacred places.
Second, compared to the small church, the granary was obviously several times larger, sheltering more people.
When the dark fog eroded the area outside the granary, a huge impact sound followed.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
With each impact, all strength was exhausted, and even the assailants couldn’t help but howl in pain, but they would unhesitatingly charge again after withdrawing a short distance.
They had no control over their actions.
Spear formation!
With a command from Kopofiel.
A phalanx of long spears thrust diagonally out from the round holes at the bottom row of the granary’s gate.
Even without the experienced Holy Warriors, Kopofiel had anticipated that vampires would likely drive other creatures to storm the granary tonight, thus preparing defensive measures carefully.
While the granary’s gate was further thickened and fortified, cup-sized holes were also drilled out.
Doing so would naturally weaken the gate’s sturdiness, but when dozens of sharpened round wooden sticks protruded from within,
it immediately transformed into an oversized defensive spiked wall.
The attackers who had just completed an assault had not expected this move.
They crashed right into the wall of spears.
The more terrifying their charging force, the greater the damage they received.
Pu pu!
The sound of long spears piercing into flesh, cutting through skin and meat.
Crack! Crack!
The sound of long spears breaking under the enormous force of the collision.
Ahh! Ahh!
The cries of a few militia behind the granary’s door who failed to brace the spears on the ground and were catapulted through the air; one unfortunate lad got struck in the nose by the tail of a bouncing spear, bleeding profusely on the spot.
Shielded by a layer of the door, at the small end of the lever, they were still so challenged.
On the other side, the attackers, facing the big end of the lever, were unimaginably pitiful.
Even the wooden tips pierced through their skin and fur with ease, deeply into their bodies.
Large amounts of blood flowed in through the intact spears.
Two of the most ferocious Comanso Tigers died on the spot.
One with a broken spear limped back, most of the broken shaft still protruding; if it didn’t charge again, well and good, but if it did, the broken spear would likely pierce deeper into its body and take its life.
An Owl Bear hung outside the granary door, wounded but not dead, breathing out more than breathing in, unlikely to survive the night without medical attention.
After this counterattack, the assault outside noticeably halted.
Although these monsters were hastily conscripted, their casualties wouldn’t cause the vampires any grief.
But their numbers were finite, and the battle had just begun; they couldn’t afford to use them all up in front of the granary door.
The vampires were probably circling the granary, looking for a new breakthrough point.
They were bound to be disappointed.
The granary was the most important construction for villages without castles, no exception.
Not only because it stored food crucial to the villagers, but also because it was their last refuge; when faced with attacks from overwhelmingly strong enemies, when the village could not hold, they would often hide in the granary for their final stand.
In Thacel, where warlord conflicts raged for years, this practice was taken to its extreme.
After these refugees fled to the valley, they continued this good practice—building a large granary first as they established their settlement.
This granary was a semi-bunker structure, built relying on a small ridge, with the latter half extending deep into the mountainside.
Compared to other places, hard frontal assault was the only option.
Soon, the granary’s gate was struck again.
But this time, the spear formation was hardly effective.
Because the ones hitting the granary’s gate were no longer Comanso Tigers and Owl Bears, but apes that had disassembled village doors to use as shields.
These apes, resembling albinos with completely pale fur, were astonishingly large; even hunched over, they stood over two and a half meters tall, and most striking were their four arms, two on each side.
The pair on top was considerably thicker than the lower, and when they walked, their slimmer lower arms touched the ground, aiding in balance and making them resemble centaur-apes from a distance.
With the wooden shield door in place, the damaging effect of the long spears was significantly reduced, and after just several rounds of battering, the door was already on the verge of collapse.
"Retreat!" Kopofiel gave a forceful wave of his hand, commanding his soldiers to abandon the gate and draw back like a receding tide into the depths of the granary.
From the beginning, it was a given that the granary gate couldn’t be held.
Not only did the vampires need it to fall, but so did Gaven and his allies.
The previous standoff had been a ruse, an opportunity to eradicate a wave of the vampires’ living forces.
Crack!
The granary gate issued its final groan and crashed to the ground.
Roar!
Two four-armed gorillas that had rushed in took the chance to throw down their wooden benches and rise excitedly on their hind legs, thunderously pounding their chests with their four arms.
Close on their heels were two more four-armed gorillas, three Comanso Tigers, and three Owl Bears.
"Fire arrows!"
"Throwing spears, throw!"
The two four-armed gorillas were perhaps a little too excited for their own good.
New attacks awaited them.
Arrows and throwing spears rained down like a deluge upon them.
The arrows were fast and accurate, all aimed at weak spots such as their eyes.
Though the throwing spears were slightly less precise, their length and force were undeniable, and taking a hit was surely no pleasant affair.
After just one volley, all were wounded.
The four-armed gorillas either howled frantically, trying to pick up the wooden door again, or attempted to drag the granary gate up to use as a shield.
The limbless Comanso Tigers and Owl Bears curled up as tightly as possible.
They neither rushed forward to attack nor withdrew; it was as if they were guarding something zealously.
Because of the strange mist, no matter how they twisted and flailed, it seemed there was an invisible barrier at the door, keeping them out just as it kept their masters out.
What really impeded the vampires wasn’t the physical gate; it was the Divine Laws bestowed by the gods.
Even if the gate stood wide open, without an invitation from the master, vampires could not set foot inside.
In the depths of the black mist, a shaky, frail figure emerged, revealing a small, pale face.
"Don’t fire arrows, don’t throw spears, don’t harm her, she’s Mandi, the one who vanished a while back. Hurry, go save her and bring her back."
"Stop, have you lost your mind? Do you really think Mandi could have escaped under these circumstances?"
"Fire arrows, keep firing, kill her, quick, kill her, she’s been controlled by those vampires, she’s about to open the door for them."
"Have you all gone mad? How could you possibly bring yourselves to do it?"
Inside the granary, upon the appearance of the little girl, a commotion ensued.
This little girl was one of the villagers who had previously disappeared.
Those militiamen, brimming with a sense of justice, wanted to rush out to rescue the little girl, but were forcefully restrained by those next to them.
When they realized it was the Holy Warriors holding them back, those with hot blood cooled their heads.
When it came to a sense of justice, no one surpassed the Holy Warriors. If they were adamant about firing arrows, it meant there was something wrong with the girl named Mandi.
The arrows and throwing spears once again shot into the sky.
Whether it was the four-armed gorillas, the Comanso Tigers, or the Owl Bears, they all stood in front of the little girl, protecting her safety with their lives.
Laws are rigid, people are flexible.
Even the Divine Laws laid down by the gods could be circumvented by vampires finding the appropriate means of exploitation.
That was through the use of Charm abilities to control people, opening their own doors and inviting them in.
Especially with communal constructions like granaries, opening the gate was easier, as it only required one person from the village to do so.
This girl named Mandi was their key to unlocking the door.
Under the fearless protection of the beasts and monsters, the fragile Mandi made a gesture of opening a door in front of the granary gate.
Clearly, she was acting against thin air.
Yet an invisible shield was forcibly opened by her, and the black mist that had been kept at bay surged in like a monstrous tide, cackling as it flooded into the granary.
The remaining beasts and monsters roared and no longer stood stationary.
They charged fiercely toward the enemies that had inflicted endless pain upon them.
The mist followed closely behind them, and in the blink of an eye, it had reached where Kopofiel and his men were standing at the ready.
"Now is the time," Darnell shouted aloud, and along with the other four Paladins, all ablaze with bright white light, warhammer in one hand and warshield in the other, leaped forward from behind.
Hum!
The sacred light streaked across the sky, descending upon the granary and intertwining with the smoke within to form a pure white mist that instantly enveloped the entire granary.
Sanctum.
All the preparations for this Sanctum were ready long in advance, just awaiting the final moment to materialize.
The reason they’d waited until now was to spring the trap on the vampires.
If the Sanctum had been activated prematurely, the enemy would have been much more cautious in attacking the granary, and they might have not easily stepped foot inside.
The Anti-Evil Array has an external and internal application.
Externally, it forms a protective circle that repels those evil creatures trying to enter, especially those summoned evil beings.
Internally, it also forms a prison that incarcerates those evil creatures within, leaving them unable to escape. When combined with a Dimensional Anchor, it is an excellent trap for dealing with those who Summon Demons and Devils.
As vampires are inherently evil beings, although they cannot be easily imprisoned as summoned creatures are, escaping would still be quite a struggle for them, requiring a few seconds at least — and that’s if they’re solely focused on doing so.
Attempting to breach under the watch of enemies, especially strong ones, would be extremely foolish. A slight misstep could be fatal.
