Chapter 1021: Chapter 607: The Formidable Lizard Queen

Croak! Croak, croak!

This time, the frog calls were shrill and urgent.

One by one, tall, red-skinned goblin warriors with hooked noses and pointed ears, armed to the teeth, rose from behind the walls of the tower war chariots, revealing a fierce grin as their swords heavily cleaved down.

The mad frogmen in the air had no ability to dodge and each took at least two or three hits.

Less than one in ten lived; most were killed on the spot, and already stiff when they hit the ground, many even chopped into several pieces.

In the water or swamps, these mad frogmen might have had a slight chance against the hobgoblin soldiers, but on land, they were fated for slaughter.

How could the ballista carts, vital battle tools of the Conqueror Army, have no defenses prepared?

Indeed, the Conqueror Army had dispatched both its vanguards, but hidden within their tower war chariots was another force.

Before they left Efanso, the Blood Claw General from Blood Gorge City allocated a hobgoblin infantry legion to Gaven, who joined the Conqueror Army secretly en route. Once part of the army, they hid inside the tower war chariots, living their entire lives on them; 2,000 soldiers spread across 300 carts, averaging fewer than seven per vehicle.

With the Conqueror Army so large, even an unexpected increase of 2,000 mouths went unnoticed – not just by outsiders, but many within the Conqueror Army itself.

These hobgoblin soldiers had but one mission: to guard the tower war chariots and slay anyone who tried to approach. Hand-picked elites from Blood Gorge City, each had at least three professional levels, plus the two life dice inherent to their kind, giving them an edge in combat against human warriors with four or five professional levels and comparable equipment. Their natural advantage lay in their size, with superior strength and constitution.

Bang!

The reverse surge of the floodwaters hit again, landing heavily on the Bridge of Human God.

Yet this time, there was hardly any movement from the Conqueror Army on the bridge to evade it, as it was clear to the discerning eye that it no longer posed a threat.

The water’s rise mainly served to send more troops over – how else to pose a threat to the Conqueror Army?

Even the Lizard Queen herself dared not launch a rash attack, as self-assured as she was, facing the potential volley from dozens, perhaps hundreds of heavy crossbow vehicles.

Croak, croak, croak!

Leading the charge again were the mad frogmen, amidst noticeably more blackscaled lizardfolk, and even dozens of evil fang lizardfolk mixed in. Fierce and massive, they were a terror to the Conqueror Army’s armed settlers, who all fell back behind the tower war chariots.

These imposing adversaries must possess brutal attack power; to combat them was to allow for little mistake, with either their heavy stone warhammers or javelins akin to attacking siege crossbows promising devastating harm. The armed settlers would surely not withstand a single blow.

However, they did not seem overly panicked, for they were not the only ones with giant-sized warriors in their ranks.

One by one, armed to the teeth hobgoblin giants emerged from behind the tower war chariots.

Given that all living beings’ energies are finite, in a standoff between armies, it’s never about displaying all one’s fighting force in one go, but about countering the opposing force’s strength and tactics. There’s no need to overpower the enemy by much; it’s enough to suppress and neutralize them, disrupting their military objectives.

And the Conqueror Army faithfully executed this principle. After several exchanges, they still adhered to conventional combat methods, not only keeping many unique troops in reserve but scarcely using offensive magic.

Apart from the ineffectiveness of common magic against the enemy’s unusual tactics, they needed to conserve strength for the long battle ahead, with the sound of howling wolves signifying more enemies rushing toward the Bridge of Human God.

Seeing the hobgoblin giants set against them, the evil fang lizardfolk couldn’t help but halt their advance, retreating behind the mad frogmen and blackscaled lizardfolk.

Outnumbered and outmatched in equipment, they knew better than to engage recklessly. It was wiser to hold positions and wait for reinforcements, for their strongest forces hadn’t yet been deployed.

Among them, the Lizard Queen was their trump card.

This time, the rising flood didn’t recede far but wrapped around the Bridge of Human God. It sent a steady stream of the Lizardfolk Army onto the bridge while also unleashing a mist from the water’s surface that drifted toward the bridge.

Though it seemed slow, the mist was fast, quickly enveloping a dozen meters of the bridge area. The Lizard Queen’s roar echoed directly into the minds of every creature shrouded within it, carrying an irresistible will: "From now on, you are my Kurgor’s slaves, submit to me, fight for me, and exterminate my enemies."
