Chapter 1017: Chapter 605 God Responds_3
She saw only the negative side, but the positive side was that it greatly enhanced the safety coefficients of Legendary Spellcasters researching Legendary Spells. They could estimate the probability of success through some magic coefficients, basic experiments, and predictions made using the Magic Network before making a decision.
Even if the research failed, most of the uncontrollable forces would be absorbed by the Magic Network, keeping the backlash damage within a controllable range, instead of a complete magical explosion that would blast the researchers to pieces.
Nevertheless, every year, there were still one or two rumors of Legendary Spellcasters killing themselves while researching Legendary Spells — they usually prepared various means of resurrection for themselves.
However, compared to the era of the Nesserel Empire, such magical accidents have become much less frequent. Back then, it was common for the Mage Tower or the lands of a Legendary Arcanist to be blown into the sky.
It was precisely that kind of unrestricted, rampant growth that gave birth to a large variety of Legendary Spells. Now, on the Felen Continent, eighty percent of the popular Legendary Spells originated from that era, whether as direct teachings or variants.
In short, Legendary Spells were very difficult to master, with eight out of ten Legendary Mages not managing to grasp them. This was not to mention that those who did happened to master only auxiliary Legendary Spells like the Bridge Creation Spell, making the likelihood even smaller.
Compared to Legendary Spells, the Lizard Queen believed more in Divine Arts. Those high and mighty beings loved to meddle excessively.
No, to put it more precisely, they were exploiting the situation to snatch benefits for themselves, yet they did so under the guise of benevolence and kindness. Such behavior was most disgusting.
"No matter whether it is formed by a Legendary Spell or the work of some deity, you are in my way today, and I must destroy you. This is the will of I, the Queen of Tun Marsh, the Scaled Overlord, the god of the Lizardfolk, Kurgor," the Lizard Queen roared angrily.
Her body thrashed wildly in the water, lifting the waves several meters high and slapping them fiercely against the recently formed Bridge of the Human God, not more than ten minutes old.
Felen’s first Bridge of Faith faced its first test of existence, deciding whether it could continue to stand on this world.
"Loose arrows."
The Conqueror Army also adopted a response, sending tens of thousands of arrows into the sky.
These naturally came from the immigrants. The Conqueror Army was now unmistakably an armed group of immigrants, each one of them equipped with at least one ranged weapon. Those within their ranks capable of using bows were given priority, while the old, weak, sick, and disabled held crossbows.
The Conqueror Army was large enough to provide a saturating cover of fire, whose lethality was uncertain, but the formation was definitely impressive. It was unlikely that many armies or creatures with less firm resolve could remain unshaken under such a barrage.
However, their enemies were somewhat special. Wrapped in the colossal waves, only huge silhouettes could be vaguely seen without a clear view of their true faces. The rain of arrows would vanish into the waves one second and become floating debris the next, crashing toward the Bridge of the Human God along with the waves.
The arrows couldn’t breach the water shield stirred up by the Lizard Queen, posing no real threat to the Lizardfolk Army. This further boosted their arrogance as numerous amphibious creatures occasionally surfaced from the waves, appearing to provoke the Conqueror Army. In reality, they were assessing the distance between the forces to find suitable points of attack, with many Lizardfolk readying throwing spears from behind.
Living in the damp, swampy conditions and being amphibious by nature meant they lacked the tools to craft bows and arrows, nor could they preserve them for long. Spears thrown by their own strength were their best means of ranged attack.
"Loose arrows!"
Another round of orders resonated throughout the Conqueror Army.
The Bridge of the Human God vibrated once again with the twang of bowstrings, this time intensely, with a buzzing tremble echoing in the air.
This time, it wasn’t the armed immigrants but the ballistae mounted on the tops of Tower War Chariots.
At least two hundred out of three hundred Tower War Chariots had been pulled onto the Bridge of the Human God, arranged in four staggered rows to form a massive defensive labyrinth. Even if the enemy managed to board the bridge, the defenders of the Conqueror Army could organize a defense using these Tower War Chariots.
Before this, the heavy crossbow vehicles installed on them were the first to come into play. Some of these ballistae came from Ruitawen, some from Efanso, but most were from Mesnoel, self-made by the Sodalite Treants.
These Treants, innately capable of bending and shaping wood, could become the finest carpenters in the world if they wished, for they could easily detect and mend flaws in wood, bringing out the best properties of any timber. Wood processed by them was famously harder and yet more flexible, renowned for its enhanced properties — this ability was limited to strengthening. Forcibly changing the wood’s characteristics, such as turning pine into white poplar, was not impossible, but it was too costly; it was typically more efficient to build upon the existing attributes.
The ballistae replicated by these Sodalite Treants weren’t only more durable but also had their range and power increased by about fifty percent. The operation was even more convenient than those made by humans, needing only three individuals to operate.
The heavy crossbow vehicles mounted on the Tower War Chariots used a windlass to draw the bowstrings, with their bases removed and directly installed on the tops of the chariots, beautifully integrating with the chariot’s double-layer structure.
Though three people were needed to operate it, only one had to stand on the second level of the Tower War Chariot to aim and handle the controls, while the other two crouched on the first level, managing the windlass and other auxiliary tasks like loading the crossbow arrows. Thus, these supportive tasks were not assigned to the able-bodied but were instead assisted by the women and elders hidden within the chariots. With many hands making light work, it was relatively easy to complete these tasks.
