Chapter 1013: Chapter 604: Human Acts as Two
Building a bridge across a river, a bridge spanning more than five hundred meters, was not an overnight feat, even with the substantial assistance of magic.
Even if it were built, given the sheer size of the Conqueror Army, crossing the river would not be a simple matter, and action was not only being taken by us, but by Dark Castle as well.
They, like us, had clearly fallen victim to the Conqueror Army’s deceit, deploying their main forces toward the Far Sea Marsh.
However, upon further consideration, they also had a scattered deployment of tributary forces in other areas, which should be able to cause some obstruction to the Conqueror Army.
Not only the Lizard Queen was disrupted by this move of the Conqueror Army, but the Ghost Witches of the Far Sea Marsh were caught off guard as well.
After all, the river crossing chosen by the Conqueror Army was closer to them, just a few steps out of the marsh and they would be upon us.
Now, what was a twenty-kilometer march distance became seventy or eighty kilometers, and their forces were a combination of naval and land troops.
While the Jackalwere Army could sprint overland, the marsh forces could only proceed along the Wild Border River, but the problem was, the Lizardfolk Army of the Lizard Queen was still in between, daring only to linger around twenty kilometers away, not daring to approach too closely.
Do not measure those agents of chaos and evil by conventional wisdom; they abandon their established targets to attack potential allies, a behavior typical of them, harming others without benefit to themselves.
Moreover, there is already a fierce competition between Tun Marsh and Far Sea Marsh; if there were a chance to swallow up Far Sea Marsh, it’s uncertain whether they would abandon the Conqueror Army and turn to attack them instead.
The mutual distrust among the three great Dark Forces was their greatest weakness.
...
"This is the feint within the Path of War, isn’t it? Never thought that a simple ruse would have them running in circles, completely disrupting their troop deployment, and in their haste, they are most prone to chaos; with each step they take, there’s the possibility of misstep," Yalusai exclaimed sincerely.
They were not in High Corner Fort at the moment, but amidst a detachment of the Purple Dragon Legion three thousand strong, marching along a new route freshly carved out by the Conqueror Army. The distance was just right, exactly thirty kilometers.
This distance was perfect, neither crossing the line with the Conqueror Army nor too far; should a significant change occur on the Conqueror Army’s side, they could promptly arrive to either take remedial action or seize a share of the spoils.
Komeer Kingdom, a nation dubbed a force of good, would not lightly strike against the Conqueror Army; that did not mean they would forgo an opportunity presented, especially when the Conqueror Army was crumbling under Monster Force attack, their intervention could mean profit and reputation gained.
"Their mastery of strategy and tactics is indeed to an extreme, but Wild Border River is not an obstacle that strategy and tactics can overcome. Could they really be planning to construct a bridge right there and then? Even with magic involved, it’s not possible to do it so fast," Crown Princess tightly clung to the crux of the issue, her beautiful brows nearly knitting into a knot, as they had yet to figure out a more suitable method to cross the river nor analyzed how the Conqueror Army intended to do it, only knowing that they prayed to the God of the Road again and were drawing up blueprints for a large bridge, and mining stone in the Stormhorn Mountains all through the night.
All signs pointed to them preparing to construct a bridge manually.
However, their construction speed would undoubtedly not outpace the enemy’s destruction.
Could it be that their manual bridge construction, like the previous road repair, was another feint, and in reality, they had prepared other ways to cross the river elsewhere?
"Yes, unless there is divine intervention to create a miracle, how could it be possible to build such a large bridge across the river so quickly?" lamented Yalusai, perhaps due to her naïve nature or her time spent within the Conqueror Army, she felt a sense of kinship toward them and was worried about their fate.
"A miracle?! Praying for the Hand of Aid?!"
The speaker was unintentional, but the listener was mindful.
Yalusai’s words struck Crown Princess like lightning, and she felt as if she touched the truth of the matter, "You two, come with me."
Crown Princess called down the Gryphon circling above their heads, mounted it with a leap, and beckoned Yalusai and Carla Denneth to follow.
As for the Purple Dragon Legion, there was obviously a deputy commander in charge.
This situation was not unique to the Purple Dragon Legion; in fact, it was common among most legions for the true battle commands to fall not to the main commander but to the deputy.
This was because the main commanders were often the highest fighting force of the army, and these elite fighters could inflict large-scale casualties if left unchecked. They had to be engaged or attempted to defeat by elite forces from their side.
Many wars’ outcomes were not decided by these armies but by the victories and defeats of such elite forces.
If the elite was defeated, even if the army below won, the war often ended in failure, and vice versa.
Gaven, as the commander of the Conqueror Army, was also primarily responsible for devising military strategies; he seldom directly led the combat. Most of the time he focused on targeting core objectives, executing decapitation tactics.
