Chapter 1012: Chapter 604: Human Acts

The Lizard Queen was not only different in body type from a regular Black Dragon, but her abilities also differed greatly from those of a typical Giant Dragon. She possessed a special ability to dominate other creatures, making them submit to her will, including leaping into her mouth and becoming her food without any resistance.

She was not merely satisfying her greedy appetite, but also waiting for her army to assemble. As the army grew with the Blackscaled Lizardfolk, the Evil Fang Lizardfolk, and the Half-Dragon Lizardfolk gathering behind her, the waters of the Wild Border River unnaturally ceased to flow, instead converging and swirling around them, forming a colossal wave over ten meters high that wrapped around the Lizard Queen. This wave, mirroring the Lizard Queen’s appearance, disobeyed the laws of physics as it surged upstream, carrying the Lizard Queen and her Lizardfolk Army towards the upper stretches of the Wild Border River.

This was the third kind of extraordinary special ability that the Lizard Queen had displayed, a power that clearly belonged not to her alone but to the group. She needed the collective strength of the Lizardfolk Army to exhibit it.

However, it must be said that this was an excellent ability for marching through water. It preserved the army’s formation while conserving the energy of the Lizardfolk soldiers, allowing them to move upstream with minimal effort.

Though this manipulation of water currents did not allow for especially fast travel, it was nonetheless spectacular. The grandeur stemmed not only from the reverse current created by the giant wave but also from the numerous, massive monsters lurking within it.

The unknown is always the most frightening. Outsiders were unaware of either the size of the Lizard Queen and her soldiers or the exact number of her troops.

If it had been a regular army receiving reports of the Monster Army from Tun Marsh, they would probably be scared stiff.

But the Conqueror Army was not; they were moving forward towards the Wild Border River in ordered chaos. Unlike their usual single-file travel, this time they moved three Tower War Chariots abreast, interlocking as they went. This formation effectively reduced the length of their convoy by two-thirds, from ten kilometers to three, allowing them to quickly deploy into a massive war camp should they face an attack.

Even loaded with cumbersome stones, the speed of the Conqueror Army was not slow, maintaining a pace of about eight kilometers per hour. Departing in the morning, they would reach the Wild Border River by noon.

However, when the Conqueror Army was about twenty kilometers from their originally planned location along the Wild Border River, they unexpectedly changed course, no longer advancing towards the northwest but switching to the southwest, towards Tun Marsh.

Just as the Lizard Queen was leading her troops across the midsection of the Wild Border River, she received this news. Her troops were about twenty kilometers from where the Conqueror Army planned to build their bridge.

Unable to contain herself, the bulky Black Dragon lifted her head from the water and bellowed, "I hate liars, I hate all liars! These bastards are playing tricks on me again. I will tear you to pieces and devour every one of you."

She needed no analysis from her strategists to understand what was happening.

The prior bridge-building location and paved paths that were shown to her were merely a performance, meant to lure her out of Tun Marsh and towards the upper-middle reaches of the Wild Border River.

Then they redirected to a real river-crossing site further downstream to build the bridge.

The benefits of this tactic were obvious. They would avoid being trapped between the forces of Tun Marsh and Far Sea Marsh.

Furthermore, the Lizard Queen and her army would be flanked—by the Conqueror Army on one side and by the forces of the Ghost Witch from Far Sea Marsh on the other.

This fully exploited the discord among the three primary indigenous forces of the Goblin Margins. Even with all her cunning, the Lizard Queen wouldn’t dare expose her rear to the malicious, profit-driven Ghost Witches. Thus, the Conqueror Army wouldn’t face three forces but rather one and a half.

"I will not let you have your way! Let’s see whether you run faster on roads or I swim faster in water," roared the Lizard Queen. She wobbled aloft from the front to the rear of her army and shouted, "Let the rear guard become the vanguard, and vice versa! We’re charging back."

The giant wave that was flowing upstream reversed direction, surging back the way it had come, its speed doubling—since going with the current didn’t require overcoming the river’s natural flow anymore.

The Conqueror Army was only about twenty kilometers from the Wild Border River, but due to the winding river, the Lizard Queen had nearly sixty kilometers to cover—three times farther.

Yet, the Lizard Queen was still confident she would reach the Wild Border River ahead of the Conqueror Army.

Firstly, they had the current as a boosting force.

Secondly, to mislead her forces, the Conqueror Army hadn’t paved the upcoming stretch of road; even with their extraordinary road-building speed, they could only manage a two-lane path for two Tower War Chariots to advance abreast, not the specially widened four-lane road that existed now.

Thirdly, and most crucially, even if they reached the Wild Border River before her, without a bridge, they couldn’t cross.
