Chapter 1003: Chapter 601 Help from the God of the Road

"Divert the water? Let those spellcasters join forces to part the waters of the Wild Border River and create a passage crossing the riverbed."

"That won’t work, it’s even more dangerous. The water downstream might be manageable as most of it will flow away, but upstream the water will keep accumulating. Even if the magic used could withstand it, how could we ensure the enemy won’t use counter-magic? Once it’s dispelled, the flood will immediately sweep away the crossing army, not to mention the riverbed will definitely be muddy, making it impossible to pass quickly."

"Any magic effect that can be countered or dispelled carries a safety hazard and thus falls outside the scope of our current considerations."

"Without the use of magic, where would a miracle come from?"

"Could we use a Wish Spell and wish for a real bridge to span the river directly?"

"Even a Wish Spell has its limits and is not all-powerful. It determines the success of the casting based on the magnitude of the engineering work. If the Wild Border River were just a small stream a dozen meters wide, there would be no problem at all. However, for a bridge spanning over half a kilometer, that’s far beyond the Wish Spell’s capability. Even if it were successful, the result might not be what we had in mind; a log bridge is still considered a bridge, after all."

"Indeed, creation is always more challenging than destruction. A Wish Spell can easily shatter the Mist Barrier of a city, yet it cannot form a bridge across a river."

"Even if it did create one, it wouldn’t be secure, meaning the enemy’s Wish Spell could counter it. The Lord of Dark Castle, Simmon, has been a Quasi-Legendary Mage for many years, and his current strength is still unknown."

"We’ve come full circle with the issue. Any method that can be targeted and countered by magic is ineffective, but the problem is, not just magic is impractical, conventional methods don’t work either. The enemy needs only to concentrate fire and bombard us with magic, destroying any bridge we’ve painstakingly built."

"Is there really no way to detour? To not cross the river but to cut through the Rocklands directly, avoiding their forces?"

"There’s no way. Far Sea Marsh and Stormhorn Mountains are merged together, with some of their offshoots even penetrating deep into the marshes, indistinguishable from one another. We would have to cross the marshes or carve a path through the Stormhorn Mountains. Neither task is possible."

"That’s right. Our rapid road-building method is only suited for open plains and wildernesses. It’s not suitable for marshes or mountains. Our efforts on the Wasteland Path proved this. Our vanguard army, based on the original route, barely managed to widen it enough for Tower War Chariots to pass. To open nearly a hundred kilometers of high mountain terrain would likely take us years, and even with abundant resources, we can’t afford to spend that long."

"What about striking first? If we lure them to this side of the river and destroy their main force, we can cross the river at leisure."

"That’s even more fanciful. Among the powers, we face now, which one is low intelligence? The followers of the God of Conspiracy? Or those Legendary Ghost Witches? The only one not infamous for cunning is the Lizard Queen, and even if we managed to break one group, there are still two more to contend with."

"Looking back, we should never have crossed the Wild Border River. If we had headed north along the Sunset Mountain Range from the start, blazing our own trail to High Road, we wouldn’t be in such a predicament now."

"If we had done that, our concerns wouldn’t be limited to just the Wild Border River. Instead, it would be the entire stretch of journey. The size of Tun Marsh isn’t fixed; it swells and recedes with the rainfall. This area is also affected by the rainy season in Comanso. It’s at its largest now, and many places are submerged. From afar, these areas look like grassland, but they’re actually mud pits. Add frequent monster attacks, and we wouldn’t even get halfway before suffering significant losses, unlike now with no casualties."

"I know. I attended that military council myself. It was just a casual complaint, no need to take it seriously."

"I’m not taking it out on you. I’m concerned whether the conditions between Tun Marsh and Far Sea Marsh are also like this?"

"You’re overthinking it. This region hasn’t been submerged into the marshes because it’s part of the Stormhorn’s underground offshoots, which are relatively high in elevation. On the other side is supported by the offshoots of Grey Watcher Mountains. The Wild Border River has indeed been forcibly confined, making it fast-flowing with a low terrain that is difficult to cross."

"This reassures me, but the matter of crossing the river is still at an impasse."

The high command of the Conqueror Army, with their grand ideas like freezing to build bridges or parting waters, possessed the combined might of countless individuals and the full utilization of magic.

If it were like before when they were only battling against nature, any method would have been viable, just requiring a bit more time and effort.

But now, surrounded by enemies, they were out of options.

Scheming is merely an auxiliary means and not omnipotent; at least it can’t conjure up a bridge for the Conqueror Army out of thin air.

As everyone was at a loss, a staff member who came in to relay information broke the deadlock, "Lord, outside there are dozens of knights requesting an audience, calling themselves the Shadow Sword Knights Templar, and they are the disciples of the Windslaver."
