Yu Ze laughed, “Good.”
Early the next morning, Muniang hurried to Mei Garden. Zhong Yulang was taken aback, “Why are you here so early? I haven’t sorted everything out yet…”
Muniang waved her hand, “No need to sort it out, we’re changing our route. Our first stop will be Pingyue City. Get ready immediately, ideally, we’ll start touring the day after tomorrow.”
Zhong Yulang was stunned, “But we haven’t finished the old plays in Qinghua City yet, are we leaving just like that?”
Muniang pressed her lips together and asked, “How many are left?”
“About six acts, I guess, which should take six days.”
“Three acts a day! It’ll all be done in two days. We can’t delay any further.”
“But everyone still needs to prepare, and we also have to make arrangements for Pingyue City beforehand, this…”
“There’s no need to prepare. Just make sure the people and props are ready. We can start as soon as we load the wagons. As for Pingyue City, we’ll arrange it when we get there,” Muniang said.
“Why the sudden rush?”
“Don’t ask these things, go and instruct them. For the play we’re going to perform in Pingyue City, we might as well use an old one. ‘The Condor Heroes’ isn’t bad. Have the actors ready for that play, understood?”
“Yes.”
Since she was going on a long journey, Muniang naturally had to inform Qinghe, who was now busy keeping house and teaching her children, leading a contented life.
“Look at you, why are you suddenly leaving? Now I’ll be alone in Qinghua City, without anyone to talk to,” Qinghe sighed.
“It’s not sudden, I’ve had plans for a while now. It’s just that this departure is a bit rushed. They are going on tour, and I must accompany them for a while to feel at ease. Otherwise, I’d always feel unsettled. It is my theatrical troupe, after all.”
“Right, right, right, you just can’t keep still. Is your husband accompanying you?”
“He said he wouldn’t be at ease without me, and he’s not busy anyway, so naturally, he’s coming with me.”
Qinghe giggled, “You two are a perfect match, both so unique. Just make sure to take care of yourself this time. I’ll wait for your return.”
After bidding farewell to Qinghe, she faced a barrage of concerns from Mrs. Lin, “Look at you, already a mother and still causing worry. You’d be better off staying home teaching your child, instead of running off to do all this.”
Muniang smiled helplessly, “Mother, there are some things you don’t understand. This isn’t just for me, it’s also for Yu Ze. My business expanding is a huge advantage for him in many ways.”
Mrs. Lin sighed, “Well then, the idea of you being an ordinary housewife is impossible.”
Muniang tugged at Mrs. Lin’s sleeve, “If I were an ordinary housewife, we’d still be in Tupo Village right now. I want to be extraordinary, to earn money for you, to provide for you in your old age!”
“You child.”
“Mother, you have the grandchildren to keep you company at home, so I’m not worried about you being lonely. I’ve already found a good nurse, maid, and attendant for you. You don’t have to work hard to take care of them, don’t tire yourself out,” Muniang instructed.
“I know, rest assured. You’ve even started giving me instructions. With these two darling grandchildren for company, I won’t have time to worry about you!” Mrs. Lin said, feigning annoyance.
Cuddled in Mrs. Lin’s arms, Muniang cooed, “How can you say that, Mother? I’m your genuine daughter!”
Muniang knew that Mrs. Lin’s words were light, but her heart was heavy with reluctance. After all, she was her only daughter and her sole family member. Every time she left, her mother was left alone.
Muniang was very worried inside. Mrs. Lin’s life revolved around her, yet she couldn’t make Mrs. Lin her own center. She had a husband, children, and even ambition; it wasn’t fair to Mrs. Lin. Now, even though she could indeed live with Mrs. Lin just like before, the fact that she had become a part of the Yu Family was unchangeable, and Mrs. Lin was lonely.
“Muniang, what’s wrong?” Yu Ze noticed Muniang was distracted and asked.
Muniang was pulled back from her thoughts and replied, “I was thinking about my mother. She’s alone now, always lonely. I’m thinking it might be better to find her a companion.”
Yu Ze was stunned for a moment, but then he remembered that with Muniang always being so busy, Mrs. Lin indeed might be feeling lonely. However—
“Mother probably wouldn’t want to find someone.”
Muniang said helplessly, “I’ve thought about this before, but it was thinking of her temperament that made me drop the idea. Yet now, I feel increasingly that she’s too lonely on her own. After all, I am a married daughter, and when she’s so alone and quiet, I can’t help but worry.”
“Then when we return this time, we’ll have a good talk with her. It would be good to find someone reliable,” Yu Ze suggested.
“Mmm.”
Everything was ready, and early that day, Muniang and Yu Ze got ready to leave the house. The luggage had already been loaded onto the carriage, and Muniang went to check on the children, hugging and kissing them: “Babies, wait for Mommy. Mommy will be out for a short while and will be back soon. Be good, don’t be naughty.”
The wet nurse laughed and said, “These little ones are so young, what does being naughty or not even mean?”
Muniang touched her little treasures and then said, “When you babies grow up, Mommy will take you with her.”
The wet nurse was startled but then, thinking about Lady’s unusual way of handling things, didn’t say much.
Yet the two babies seemed to understand as they cooed and giggled, their tiny feet kicking excitedly and gleefully.
Qingya smiled and said, “Lady, look, the young master and miss seem to like the idea.”
Muniang laughed proudly, “Of course, whose children are they after all?”
“Just like their mother, wild at heart. I suppose I’ll have my hands full in the future,” Yu Ze said with a teasing tone, having snuck in unnoticed.
Muniang glared at him with feigned anger, “Shut up!”
Yu Ze hugged the children and then said, “My children should be wild!”
Muniang laughed, “There, that’s more like it!”
“Alright, it’s time to get going, let’s go.”
“Mmm, okay. Take good care of the young master and miss, and don’t slack off in any way, got it?”
“Yes.”
The carriage was ready, and Muniang and Yu Ze got on and headed straight for Mei Garden. Zhong Yulang and a group of actors were also prepared to meet up with Muniang. A line of carriages then followed the street out of the city together.
People on the street watched this procession and began to talk amongst themselves.
“Wow, who’s that with such a grand entourage?”
“You don’t know? Those are actors from Mei Garden. They’re preparing to go on a touring performance.”
“Tsk, this is the first time I’ve seen actors carry such prestige. Look at that carriage, I’ve heard it’s Miss Chen’s. Doesn’t it look just like what a noble lady would have? Mei Garden really knows how to elevate an actor,” they remarked.
