Chapter 493 - 493 494 Insoluble_1
Chapter 493: Chapter 494 Insoluble_1 Chapter 493: Chapter 494 Insoluble_1 Xu Shuzhuo’s question was obviously a superfluous one. Everyone turned their skeptical eyes towards Madam Li, and some indignant ladies immediately opened their mouths, “Oh, I was just wondering what on earth was going on. Turns out there really was someone playing tricks, trying to deliberately kill Dabao’s Mother and her son. How dark-hearted can you be, not even sparing your own daughter-in-law!”
“Exactly, if you can’t stand your daughter-in-law, you could have just confronted her directly, why resort to these despicable tactics? Look at how miserable Dabao’s Mother is because of you. You have no humanity.”
Madam Li’s face flushed red, and she rushed to the bowl of water, staring intently, but she couldn’t escape the reality that the blood had indeed dissolved, and she screamed, “How is this possible? How is this possible? The bowl of water I had before clearly didn’t mix.”
A woman scolded shrilly, “Hah! You’re asking us? We want to ask you! The blood test was done by you yourself; we all saw you hit Dabao’s Mother. We know nothing else. Madam Li, to think we trusted you, yet you’ve been running circles around us. That’s your own grandson, yet you could bring yourself to harm him, truly devoid of any human decency!”
Madam Li retorted, “What nonsense? I’m the one without humanity, and you all have it? Do I need to perform a blood test in front of you all when dealing with my family affairs?”
Xu Shuzhuo couldn’t stand it any longer, “Mother, what on earth is going on? Although Dabao’s Mother isn’t your favorite on normal days, there was no need to harm her so, and besides, that’s my own son. How could you be so cruel?”
“Do you not believe me anymore, Xu Shuzhuo? How could I harm you? This woman has been slept with by another man, gave birth to a bastard, I took care of it, and now you’re still complaining?”
“So what’s the explanation for the blood mixing now?!” Xu Shuzhuo demanded.
Madam Li was left speechless, at a loss for what to do. The bowl she had before had clearly not mixed!
The villagers started gossiping amongst themselves, “I was wondering why such an honest person like Dabao’s Mother would resort to such pretense. If indeed she had been violated, she wouldn’t have had the face to give birth to the child. Now look at poor Dabao’s Mother, eagerly expecting the birth of her child to clear her name, only to be schemed against by such a vicious mother-in-law. Madam Li obviously wanted both her and the child dead.”
“Isn’t that the truth? Madam Li had wanted to kill Dabao’s Mother from the start but was stopped by the Village Head. After she got pregnant, Madam Li completely disagreed, claiming that even if the child was from the Xu Family, it would still be tainted, better off dead. It was Xu Shuzhuo who stopped her. I thought she had let go of her grudge, but it turns out she still wanted them dead.”
“She’s truly heartless; Dabao’s Mother is an in-law, so being seen as an outsider in her eyes is one thing, but how could she harm her own grandson? Dabao’s Mother is unlucky to have such a mother-in-law.”
Hearing everyone’s discussion, Madam Li was furious, and she shouted, “I bet it’s that Imperial Physician who’s lying! He’s so protective of that wench, for all we know, he could be her lover; otherwise, how could the blood suddenly mix? I simply don’t believe it!”
Doctor Xue became so angry his face turned red and his neck swelled, “Shut your damn mouth! I’m here to uphold justice, and now you’re slandering me? I am an official appointed by the court; how could I tolerate such nonsense from a village woman?”
Madam Li jumped in fright, realizing that the person she had provoked this time was no ordinary individual but a high-ranking official. She nearly brought huge trouble upon herself with her unguarded tongue and hurriedly shut her mouth.
Doctor Xue had initially felt that Muniang’s conduct was somewhat unkind, but now, looking at Madam Li’s expression, he was filled with disgust.
Madam Li didn’t almost cause trouble; she had already caused it, and Muniang’s scheme wasn’t meant to end here.
Suddenly, Doctor Xue asked, “Who was present during the blood test for kinship? Was it just Madam Li alone?”
The midwife hastily said, “Although this old woman was present, I only saw Madam Li draw blood from the child; I didn’t see anything else, truly, it’s not my business at all.”
“Since Madam Li’s bowl of blood did not mix, I would like to ask whose blood was used that did not mix with Xu Shouzhuo’s,” Doctor Xue’s words startled everyone awake.
The villagers looked over in sudden astonishment.
The midwife vowed fervently, “It absolutely wasn’t my blood. Madam Li found childbirth to be inauspicious and didn’t want to stay inside at all. After hearing the child was born, she had me take the child out to draw blood, and then she took the bowl to find Xu Shouzhuo for blood-letting in the other room. If I speak even half a lie, I deserve to be struck by lightning!”
Doctor Xue stroked his beard and barked sharply, “Nonsense! If it wasn’t your blood, whose was it? The Xu Family had few members; apart from Dabao’s Mother and her son, there were only Madam Li and Xu Shouzhuo. You even said that Madam Li found childbirth inauspicious and didn’t come into contact with Dabao’s Mother at all. The blood wasn’t the child’s, so it only leaves you and Madam Li; if not your blood, could it really be Madam Li’s?”
This sounded like he was questioning the midwife, but he was actually shooting an arrow at Madam Li in secret.
Xu Shouzhuo was also taken aback. He had seen the blood test with his own eyes; Madam Li had brought over the child’s blood for him to draw blood, and then he witnessed the blood not mixing. Now, he could be certain it wasn’t the child’s blood, but whose was it?!
Madam Li stood there dumbfounded, not yet realizing what was going on, when Muniang immediately said, “Midwife, watch yourself. It’s clear that you are in collusion with Madam Li; that blood must be yours. Otherwise, how could Madam Li’s blood not mix with her own son’s?!”
The midwife wouldn’t take the blame for nothing, vigorously shaking her hands, “It really isn’t mine, I have no grudge against the child, why would I harm him? Moreover, I’m not on good terms with Madam Li; why would I do such an unconscionable act? I’m afraid of being haunted by ghosts at night! I only helped with the delivery, took the child to Madam Li for blood-letting, and I don’t know anything beyond that. How can this mess be pinned on me now? If I have colluded with Madam Li, may I never die a good death!”
The midwife’s oath was so serious that it naturally convinced some of the people.
Muniang secretly curled her lips into a smile, then feigned ignorance, “If what you say is true, and it’s not your blood, then could it be Madam Li’s blood? But Madam Li and Xu Shouzhuo are clearly mother and son; how could their blood not mix?”
The villagers were abuzz, clearly stirred by this situation, and their glances at Madam Li were now tinged with doubt.
Madam Li was so angry she felt like exploding, almost like she could kill someone. She cursed loudly, “Go to hell! How could my own son’s blood not mix? Don’t even think about slandering me! I didn’t tamper with that blood, it’s the child’s blood, not mine!”
