Chapter 292: Chapter 293: Meeting the In-Laws_1 Chapter 292: Chapter 293: Meeting the In-Laws_1 Who knew that as soon as these words were spoken, Yu Ze cast a cold glance over, causing Jiang Hengyu to almost choke on his saliva, his face turning red with embarrassment. A maid hurriedly passed over a handkerchief to help him catch his breath, “Lord, are you alright?”
When Jiang Hengyu looked up again, Yu Ze and his wife had already disappeared from his sight. He didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, lamenting that all his lifelong friendship was going to the dogs!
“Later when we return to the mansion, my mother will inevitably pull you aside to ask all sorts of questions. Don’t overthink it; that’s just the way she is. But rest assured, they definitely won’t give you a hard time. My parents like you very much,” Yu Ze said.
Muniang was still upset with Yu Ze for not buying her the candy sculpture, and she glared at him, “But I don’t like you right now!”
Yu Ze held his forehead, still so grudge-holding, she was.
“I’ll have someone make you a few prettier ones later. That one was too ugly.”
Muniang said discontentedly, “What kind will they make? They’re not going to use you as the model, are they?”
Yu Ze smiled with a crooked lip, “I don’t need a fake one. You can have me anytime you want.”
Muniang’s skin crawled, and she elbowed him, “Get lost!”
“Young Lord! Young Lord! I’ve finally managed to meet up with you. I’ve been waiting for so long!” A person dressed like a servant came over, ecstatic.
“Why are you waiting here?”
The servant said with a smile, “Ever since the letter arrived a few days ago saying you would be returning, Lord Marquis and the Marquise instructed me to wait here daily. As soon as there was any news, I was to hurriedly go and report. Someone from Datun has already run back to report, and I specifically waited here to greet you, Young Lord!”
Yu Ze nodded, then said to Muniang, “Let’s head back first, shall we? There are many more fun places in the Capital City. I’ll take you out again later, alright?”
“Alright.”
The two headed straight for the Marquis Chen Mansion. Upon arriving at the entrance, they saw a group of maids and servants waiting, obviously there to greet them. Standing in the middle was a woman dressed in luxurious clothes, presumably the Marquise.
Muniang felt inexplicably nervous. In both her past life and this one, it was her first time meeting her in-laws, and she had never witnessed such a procession.
Yu Ze tightened his grip on Muniang’s hand and whispered, “Don’t be afraid, I’m here to protect you.”
Only then did Muniang’s heart settle somewhat. From a distance, she observed Yu Ze’s mother, who appeared to be a gentle woman. Perhaps she wouldn’t be difficult to get along with?
“Greetings, Mother,” Yu Ze bowed and said, his respectful demeanor tinged with a hint of distance.
But Jian Yue at that moment could hardly worry about these details. She hurriedly replied, “You’ve finally returned. Last time you came back, you didn’t stay for long, and this trip took several months. Your mother has been so anxious waiting for you.”
Jian Yue then turned her gaze to Muniang, examining her. Muniang blinked, wondering whether she should call her “Mother” like Yu Ze did or “Lady of Marquis Chen.”
As if reading Muniang’s mind, Jian Yue chuckled lightly, “Now that you’re married, should you not call me ‘Mother’ when you see me?”
Muniang hastily said, “Mother.”
Jian Yue seemed quite pleased, quickly ushering the two inside. She had been eager these past days, mostly looking forward to meeting her daughter-in-law. Although she had only caught a glimpse of Muniang, her impression was that the girl had clear and honest eyes; at least she wasn’t harboring ill intentions. While Muniang’s appearance was indeed attractive, the Capital City was full of beautiful women. What mattered more were her temperament and mannerisms, which even seemed to outshine the noble ladies of the Capital.
Jian Yue had initially thought that Muniang, being from a remote village, might be shy and timid; such traits in a wife were not necessarily bad, but not suitable for Yu Ze’s spouse. After all, Yu Ze held a high status, and as the Princess of Marquis Chen Mansion, her behavior reflected on the mansion’s reputation and Yu Ze’s honor. It wouldn’t do to let others look down upon her.
Yu Ze and Muniang entered the mansion and first went to see Marquis Chen. Yu Ze had been holding Muniang’s hand all the way, but Muniang struggled free, prompting Yu Ze to softly ask, “What’s wrong?”
“Hot.”
Yu Ze was taken aback. There wasn’t a trace of heat on her face; it was clearly disdain. This little wild cat, he had only been holding her hand to ease her nerves, and yet she disdained him for it.
“Greetings to my father,” Yu Ze said as soon as he entered, bowing with his hands folded in front of him.
Muniang followed with the same greeting.
Marquis Chen coughed lightly before speaking, “You still know to come back! I thought you forgot about your home.” His tone carried a hint of severity.
Jian Yue hurriedly interjected, “Why are you bringing that up now? Isn’t it good that he’s back? He rarely comes home, why start a quarrel again?”
Marquis Chen’s eyes widened, “You’re still taking his side? He dared to defy an imperial decree; I haven’t even settled the score with him yet! He’s grown so unruly as he’s gotten older!”
Muniang’s heart skipped a beat. Was this really leading to family discipline?
Jian Yue quickly pulled Marquis Chen aside and whispered, “You were the one longing for his return when he wasn’t here, and now that he’s back, do you want to drive him away? Ze’er is all grown up; he can handle himself. Our daughter-in-law has just stepped foot in our home; don’t let others make a mockery of us.”
Marquis Chen glanced at Muniang beside Yu Ze and managed to suppress his anger. He huffed and sat down, letting his robe settle.
“Is this the bride you want to bring into our family?”
“She is already the bride I’ve brought into our family,” Yu Ze earnestly replied.
Marquis Chen glared at him. The boy was now even quibbling over these things; surely he wasn’t going to say he wouldn’t allow the marriage, was he?
“I, as the father, don’t even know the name of the bride you’ve married,” Marquis Chen said with a clear note of resentment.
Yu Ze was about to speak but Muniang stopped him. She bent her knees in a gesture of respect and said, “I am Qiao Muniang from Tupo Village, Chatu Town. I was only able to meet with my father-in-law today due to unavoidable circumstances, and I ask for your understanding.”
Marquis Chen stroked his beard and nodded, observing her comportment, which was nothing short of refined, and it fit his expectations quite well. Despite the strained relationship with his son, how could he not understand his own child? If she were a common girl, would Yu Ze ever have taken a second glance?
“Look here, your bride is more sensible than you,” Marquis Chen said gruffly.
Yu Ze could not help the joy in his heart—his father’s words were, in fact, an acceptance of Muniang’s status. His lips curved into a smile unconsciously, “Father speaks the truth.”
Only then did Marquis Chen speak, “Now that you’re back, go ahead and take care of the wedding. I don’t intend to intervene in that matter.”
“Yes,” Yu Ze said, his voice tinged with joy, a rare harmony between father and son.
Jian Yue was brimming with relief, not expecting this daughter-in-law to help ease the tension between the two.
Marquis Chen let out a snort before saying, “Come with me to the study.” It seemed there were grave matters of state they needed to discuss.
Yu Ze hesitated, glancing at Muniang, and Jian Yue couldn’t help but chuckle, “Do you really think Muniang could be bullied here?” The boy was overly protective of his bride.
