Chapter 291: Chapter 292: Second Assassination (1) Chapter 291: Chapter 292: Second Assassination (1) “Hmm.”
Muniang felt that as long as she had Yu Ze’s promise, it seemed there was nothing she couldn’t trust; without realizing it, she had already started to place her sense of security in him.
Finally, they entered the city before nightfall and found a nearby inn to rest.
“Guest, are you just stopping by, or will you be staying the night?” A warm and enthusiastic attendant approached them as soon as they entered.
Muniang smiled and said, “Staying the night.”
“Sure thing! How many rooms would you like?”
“Two—”
“One room!” Before Muniang could finish, Yu Ze interrupted her.
“What for?” Muniang glared at him defensively, and Yu Ze let out a wry smile. She had just been touched, gentle as water, and in a twinkling, she became like this again—truly an untamed white-eyed wolf that he inexplicably adored.
“Two rooms wouldn’t be safe for protecting you; I fear the assassin might strike again.” Yu Ze deliberately made it sound frightening.
Muniang pondered for a moment, felt he made sense, and nodded, then told the attendant, “Then just one room.”
Yu Ze was inwardly delighted; what a great excuse! In fact, he was certain that those assassins wouldn’t be coming for them now and even if they did return, it wouldn’t be so soon. He simply wanted an excuse to be closer to her.
But dreams are beautiful, and reality is harsh.
As soon as they entered the room, Muniang pointed to a couch and said, “There, you sleep there.”
Yu Ze complained, “My lady—”
Muniang blinked, “Or did you want me to sleep there?”
“No, I’ll sleep,” Yu Ze replied reluctantly.
Turning her back, Muniang climbed straight into bed and thought to herself, the little guy thinks he can compete with me? Before we’re wed, don’t even dream about it!
The attendant suddenly came knocking on the door with eager hospitality and even brought over a silk quilt: “Guest, this quilt is for you.”
Yu Ze gave him a cold glance, and the attendant’s smile froze on his face as he nervously said, “You don’t need it?”
Yu Ze snatched the quilt directly from the attendant’s hand and slammed the door shut with a “bang.” Muniang snickered to herself; was the man throwing a tantrum?
Yu Ze, with a look of grievance, wrapped himself in the quilt and nestled into the couch before he settled down to sleep.
That night, the room was dead quiet, and through the papered windows, a tiny bamboo stick pierced through, releasing a wisp of light smoke.
Years in the military had honed his instincts, so even in sleep, he remained partly alert, ready to sense any anomalies. Yu Ze woke up almost immediately, rolling out of bed and rushing to Muniang’s side. She was startled awake by his commotion, thinking he was up to mischief again and was about to stop him when Yu Ze covered her mouth and nose.
“Don’t move, someone’s coming,” Yu Ze whispered softly.
Muniang was shocked, thinking how unlucky they were to have trouble follow them so soon.
Indeed, it wasn’t long before they saw several figures clad in night clothes entering through the window, heading straight for the bed and swinging their swords down.
“Whom do you seek to kill?” Yu Ze’s voice rose ominously.
The assassins, almost reflexively, turned and realized they had been exposed. But then a fierce light flashed in their eyes as they raised their swords and charged at Muniang, who was beside Yu Ze. Muniang was terrified and hastily dodged.
Yu Ze had quickly disposed of those black-clad assailants, pointing his sword at one of them and demanding harshly, “Speak! Who sent you?”
But the assailants simply gritted their teeth, bit into the poison hidden in their molar cavities, and died.
Yu Ze attempted to intervene, but it was too late; he could only throw his sword to the ground in frustration.
Muniang touched her chest and then said, “Why were these people so easy to deal with just now?”
“They’re not the same group we encountered during the day,” Yu Ze said gravely.
“What?”
“The ones from earlier were after me, but this group was clearly targeting you, and their abilities are on a completely different level.”
Muniang didn’t quite understand Yu Ze’s connections in the Capital City, and she couldn’t think of anyone who would transfer their hatred for Yu Ze onto her.
“Who could it be then? Why do you have so many enemies?” First one group, then another, can’t a person have some peace?
Yu Ze pursed his lips. He seemed to have a guess, but was unsure how to express it.
Muniang said suspiciously, “Don’t tell me, it’s He Suxue?”
Yu Ze’s eyes flickered, but he did not offer any rebuttal.
With a huff, Muniang said, “I’ve said before that she will not live in peace!” After that, she covered herself with the blankets and went to sleep.
Yu Ze said helplessly, “Muniang—” It was hard enough to get away from the affairs concerning He Suxue, why does she always linger like a haunting spirit?
Muniang pulled the blankets tightly around her and said nothing, closing her eyes to sleep; it was as if He Suxue was always there, constantly reminding her of her presence, like a thorn that couldn’t be removed, pricking her from time to time. What was the meaning of that?
They made a rapid journey back to the Capital City, cutting the travel time by nearly half; within a month and a half, they had already arrived. Yu Ze didn’t want any more accidents and just wanted to hurry back and settle all their matters as soon as possible.
The Capital City was indeed incomparable to a small place like Qinghua City, everywhere manifesting the extraordinary nature of the capital of the emperor. Even the street vendors were more than double in number, creating a bustling scene unlike any other. Any trace of fatigue from the long journey seemed to vanish instantly.
“Yu Ze, look, isn’t this sugar figurine beautiful? It’s so exquisitely made!” If Muniang hadn’t been on horseback, she would have surely crowded around like a child.
“Want it?” Yu Ze asked softly.
“Yes!” Muniang had heard about sugar figurines before, but this was actually her first time seeing one. The craftsmanship was so refined, even from a roadside vendor, she could imagine how extraordinary the Capital City must be.
Yu Ze dismounted gracefully, letting Muniang sit atop the horse while he led it to the sugar figurine stall. He chose a pretty little girl figurine, paid for it, and gave it to Muniang. “Here, try it.”
Muniang, holding the sugar figurine in one hand, pointed with the other at another figurine on the stall, one of a handsome young man, and said, “I want this one, it’s nicer looking! This young man is really handsome!”
The vendor quickly said, “Oh, lady, you have good taste. This sugar figurine was modeled after Jiang Hengyu, the leader of the four young nobles of the Capital City. It ought to look good, right? Want to take another one?”
Muniang’s interest was piqued. “Yes, yes!”
Yu Ze glanced at it and said calmly, “Out of money.”
“What?” Before Muniang could react, Yu Ze had already started to lead the horse away. Before leaving, he didn’t forget to say coldly to the vendor, “You should call her Lady.”
The vendor was stunned on the spot, his face stiffening.
On the upper floor of a pavilion nearby, a well-dressed and handsome young nobleman sat by the window, watching the scene below while sipping tea. He couldn’t help but laugh and said, “So this is the precious wife Yu Ze brought back this time? She really is valuable. That doting look in his eyes, I’ve never seen in my life. Tsk tsk, it’s nothing short of a miracle.”
