Chapter 949: 【949】Need emergency help
But without ice or air conditioning, such fanning was bound to be minimally effective, only serving to stir up hot air.
Xie Wanying touched the concrete floor where the patient lay; it was hot, scorching to the touch. The torrid ground surface was probably going to increase the patient’s temperature rather than cool them down; they had to move the patient to a cooler place as soon as possible.
Having just poured a bottle of water over the patient had provided slight relief, but as their temperature rose again, they worsened. A retching sound came from the patient’s throat. Fearing that vomit would reflux into the airway and cause choking, Xie Wanying and Li Xiaobing tilted the patient’s head to the side.
They had no choice but to call for an ambulance using 120.
"Calling our hospital’s staff is better than waiting for 120’s ambulance," Teacher Lu said, his eyes anxiously scanning the distance.
From where they stood, they estimated it to be only about a kilometer away from the medical college and the hospital’s emergency department entrance. Calling 120 didn’t guarantee an ambulance from their hospital; theirs might already be out on calls. Summoning an ambulance from another hospital would mean taking a longer route.
"Make a call to our emergency room," advised Li Xiaobing, convinced by the logic.
The three looked at each other, realizing none of them knew their own hospital emergency room’s phone number. It wasn’t surprising—the hospital’s phone system operated on a switchboard with extensions. There was one mainline, with each department having one or more extensions under it. Anyone calling from outside had to reach the switchboard first, and the operator would transfer the call to the respective extension. As internal hospital staff, they usually just dialed each other’s extension numbers and never bothered to learn the switchboard number. If they needed to contact someone in the hospital, they had plenty of acquaintances and would call their cell phones directly; there was no need to go through the switchboard.
"I’ll just call my husband then," Li Xiaobing decided, urging her junior sister to make the call.
Xie Wanying picked up her cellphone and dialed Senior Zhu’s number.
Dialing and waiting... after a long while, no one answered.
Checking the time, it was two-thirty in the afternoon. Troubling, the surgical staff were likely all in the operating room, starting early to ensure they finished their surgeries on time. It was unclear whether Senior Zhu had handed his phone to someone for safekeeping or had locked it away for the surgery.
"He didn’t answer, did he?" Li Xiaobing’s mouth drooped, already anticipating this. Marrying a surgeon meant dealing with outcomes like this: her husband or wife could be on the operating table saving lives, unable to answer a distress call.
Teacher Lu placed a hand on Li Xiaobing’s shoulder, "Find someone else, anyone will do."
"I’m not upset," Li Xiaobing replied. She was a doctor herself, with nothing to be upset about.
Still unsure who else to call for the emergency number, Xie Wanying thought it over and decided to call Senior Brother Huang. Senior Brother Huang, being on inpatient duty, might be able to answer. No response from Huang Zhilei either. There was no need to try calling Senior Cao now; it was certain that both of them were in the OR together and couldn’t step out.
Calling her own department, Xie Wanying didn’t want to waste any more time and called her junior sister, Fan Yunyun.
Yunyun, only an intern and new to the department, likely had no chance to be in the operating room yet.
After two rings, just as she predicted, Fan Yunyun picked up the call.
"Yunyun."
"Sister Xie, you’re looking for me!" Fan Yunyun’s voice buzzed with excitement like a chirpy sparrow, "I heard you took a few days off work to rest; I just found out you were hit by a family member. The family member was too much, but thankfully I heard they were arrested. Which student building are you in, Sister Xie? I’ll come visit you tonight with some fruit. Although Geng Lingfei said that reaching out to you privately is considered bribery."
