Chapter 54: 051. Reizel’s Idea.
"It’s a risky idea, but it’s worth trying," said Galih, who was a bit hesitant but eventually agreed.
"It’s just like the way you attacked us that day, so I think it’s a good idea," Adit continued.
"Although it’s a bit surprising, but it explains why you obey Gilbert so much. Although I didn’t expect it myself," Galih continued.
"That’s enough, no need to argue about it anymore," said Farel, who immediately added his opinion. "The most important thing is that this plan works, that’s what matters. Let’s get ready."
Farel broke up the open discussion and everyone got ready to leave.
The only ones who had not moved from that position were Johan and Putri.
The blond-haired man walked over to Putri. "I don’t know what to say, but I’m very grateful."
Putri smiled. "It’s nothing to think about."
"But you seriously want to help a stranger that Aril doesn’t even approve of?" asked Johan.
"Would you rather not be helped?" replied Putri with a counter question.
"No, it’s not like that. After hearing Aril’s words, I realized that my request was too selfish."
Putri became a little emotional and she showed a sad but empathetic expression at the same time. "Isn’t it natural that someone would do anything to help their family? If I were in the same situation, I would have begged like you."
Johan immediately recalled the fact that Gilbert was the one who killed her mother, which indirectly meant that he was responsible for it.
Johan looked away regretfully, unable to look into the her eyes. "I’m sorry about your mother. I only ordered Gilbert to take you, not to kill your mother, I -"
"There’s no need," Putri immediately cut off Johan’s sentence. "That’s in the past, and there’s nothing we can do about it. And anyway, you said it yourself, right. It wasn’t your fault. It’s okay."
Although it was painful when she remembered her mother, Putri tried to be strong and put on a big smile that dispelled Johan’s doubts.
"The most important thing is now, and now is the moment where we have a chance to do something, which is to save Jessica," Putri said with confidence and optimism.
Johan was surprised to hear that sentence.
How could someone be that cheerful even after all that had happened? How could someone forgive like that as if they had no burden at all?
How could....
The memory of a smiling Ayu suddenly hit Johan’s mind.
’Why am I even imagining her smile?’ thought Johan who suddenly formed a faint smile on his face.
Johan looked at the Putri. "Aril is a lucky man, he has a woman as good and wonderful as you by his side. Not only kind and wise, but also a good strategist and a great fighter. Aril is really lucky."
Princess suddenly blushed. "Eh?! What’s that supposed to mean? Yo... You’re... Too much."
She covered her face with both hands. "I’m... I’m not that great, I’m just an ordinary girl."
"Then -"
"DAAAA! I have to get ready too," said Putri who tried to change the subject. She turned around and walked away. "Uh... Ignoir? Where are you?"
Johan could only smile at her behavior.
’Finally! Finally! Finally someone recognizes my combat prowess!’ Putri shouted in her mind.
The girl tried very hard to hold back her happy expression.
’Finally! After months of training, someone finally acknowledge to me! And it was someone a little weaker than big brother Aril, KYAA! I’m great fighter!’ Putri shouted in her mind.
Reizel approached Johan, "Do you realize that after this you’ll be in big debt with Aril? The worst possibility is that he will make you his pawn too."
"I know that. Don’t you like your current condition?" replied Johan with a quick question.
Reizel suddenly recalled some brief memories he spent with Aril, Putri, and Ignoir.
Reizel shifted his gaze away from Johan. "I... Don’t hate it."
"Then there’s no problem." Johan turned around and walked away. "If it’s for Jessica, it’s a small price to pay anyway."
Hearing that sentence, Reizel immediately fell silent, as if something had just hit his head very hard and forced him to reflect.
Before was Aril, and now Johan. Both men would sacrifice anything for the people they cared about, no matter how selfish it was, no matter what had to be sacrificed.
The more he imagined it, the more upset he became.
Reizel lowered his face, he clenched his fists and gritted his teeth.
"Why can’t I be like those two?" muttered Reizel who tried to hold back his anger.
--------------------------------------------------
A pickup truck drove through the empty streets without a single sign of humans.
A pickup truck with a spacious cargo bed, a standard pickup truck that was usually used to transport a large amount of stuff.
But what was on the cargo bed were not objects, but people, more precisely; Johan, Farel, Galih, Ardi, and Ignoir.
The five people sat with their hands tied. Without a roof covering them, the sunlight felt so piercing.
Fortunately, only the five of them felt the heat of the Palu city sun because only Reizel and Putri were sit on the cozy place.
Reizel sat in the driving seat and steered the car carefully while Putri sat beside him, in the passenger seat.
"Are you sure it’s okay like this?" asked Putri who looked worried about the people in the cargo bed.
Reizel did not take his eyes off the road. "Don’t worry, it’s even better if it’s like this. It will feel more convincing if it’s like this."
"But why am I the only one sitting comfortably here?" continued Putri with a new question that managed to make Reizel chuckle a little.
"Do you want to kill me?"
"Eh? Why?"
"Letting you carry out a reckless plan like this will definitely make Aril angry with me, let alone making you pretend to be a hostage. Aril will definitely kill me."
Putri couldn’t dodge and only laughed awkwardly considering that Aril’s response would probably be the same as Reizel’s imagination.
"So, what role am I playing?"
"Hmn... You’re going to pretend to be my girlfriend."
"Eh?!" both of the Putri’s eyes opened wide and so did her gaping mouth.
"Calm down, I told you it’s just an act."
"Can’t we just be friends?"
"Unfortunately that’s difficult. Given what might happen in the future, they probably won’t care about anyone’s life but mine," Reizel answered swiftly.
"EHHH?!"
"The point is... stay close to me, say nothing, do nothing, and most importantly pray."
"Pray? You’ve got to be kidding me. How bad is your relationship with them?"
Reizel did not answer. His gaze was so serious looking forward without blinking.
Putri also realized how risky the thing they were about to face was.
Putri gulped and now only looked forward, and hoped that everything could go smoothly.
