Chapter 856: The Doctor and the Deputy

Chapter 856: The Doctor and the Deputy

"Mr. Carter, may I have a word with you?" Valerie approached Noah who was texting Ronnie and asked him politely.

"Sure, Deputy. What’s wrong?" Noah noticed her serious expression and turned around, giving her his full attention.

"I wanted to enquire about the explosives. Have they been..."

"They have been dealt with, Deputy. Don’t worry," Noah assured her with a smile. "Major Meyers has retrieved all of them."

"That’s good. That’s good. I can finally relax now."

"How’s work? I hope your Chief isn’t troubling you anymore." Noah looked at her mysteriously and Valerie’s brows contorted into a thoughtful frown.

"How did you..." Valerie was stunned. How did the man know that her Chief was under investigation? Wait a minute! Did Noah have a hand in this matter?

"He is unworthy of the position of the Intelligence Chief. It’s better he leaves." Noah smirked and nodded at her. "The first dance is about to begin, Deputy. Excuse me."

"Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome the new couple," the host announced and the crowd started clapping as Rachel and Daniel entered the dance floor.

A soft melody played in the background and the couple grooved to it, holding each other’s gazes. They made a fantastic sight and the audience looked on with admiration.

"Are you tired, Rach?" Daniel asked, his eyes filled with concern. Rachel looked exhausted and her weary face tugged at his heartstrings. She had been working non-stop, planning and arranging everything for their wedding.

"A little. But I can manage." Rachel leaned against his chest and moved slowly as they continued dancing.

"Are you sure?"

"Yes. I’ll take a break in between. Don’t worry."

"Tell me if you need anything."

"Sure."

As the music approached the end, Daniel ended the dance by kissing Rachel and the audience hooted, making the event all the more exciting.

The next song hummed through the speakers and Noah pulled Aria while Joshua led Ivy with him. Although she couldn’t move much, they could dance for one song at least.

Maggie and Ryder too joined the dance floor while Valerie and Preston remained seated.

"Do you want to dance?" Valerie asked, wishing to let go for one night.

"Nah, I’ll pass." Preston wasn’t that interested in dancing. So, he shook his head and swirled his glass of wine.

Valerie shrugged lightly. Since she didn’t have a dance partner, she remained seated. But it didn’t last long.

A hand stretched out before her and Valerie raised her head to meet Ian’s sparkling gaze. "Miss Evans, will you dance with me?"

Valerie was taken aback. She didn’t expect Ian to approach her, not when the man barely spoke to her. Although she was close friends with his friends, they remained mere acquaintances, occasionally having a word or two and obliging each other’s presence with a nod.

Preston eyed her teasingly, which she ignored. Instead, she placed her palm in Ian’s hand and smiled at him. "I’d love to. Thank you."

Ian escorted Valerie to the dance under the watchful eyes of his friends. He didn’t miss Joshua’s wink as he gave him a teasing look. But he disregarded it as he wrapped his hands around Valerie’s waist and started moving.

"It looks like you are the only one remaining in your friends’ group," Valerie remarked and Ian shrugged lightly.

"Yeah. It ain’t that easy to find a partner you are compatible and comfortable with."

For some reason, Valerie felt he was speaking to her in riddles. His words were a complex puzzle that she couldn’t decode.

"You’ll find a good person, Doctor. Don’t worry."

"Do you think so?" Ian was amused. But his face didn’t reveal anything.

"Yes."

"If you say so."

Meanwhile, Aria glanced at Ian again and smiled mysteriously. "Do you think something’s going on between the Doctor and the Deputy?"

Noah didn’t move his gaze away from the woman in his arms. Why did he have to care about others when he had his beloved in his embrace?

"I don’t know," Noah replied honestly. It didn’t matter to him if something really was going on between the two. It was Ian’s personal life. He had no right to interfere.

"They would form an interesting couple. Don’t you think so?" Aria questioned, envisioning the scene immediately. They did form a sexy couple. She didn’t deny it.

"Maybe," Noah mumbled absent-mindedly.

"Noah, are you even listening to me?" Aria raised her head and glared at the man who was gazing at her lovingly. The intensity in his eyes baffled her and she went blank for a moment.

"I listen to everything you say."

"If you say so." Aria pouted and turned towards Ian once again. "What do you think they are talking about?"

"Why are you interested in them? You have a handsome man dancing with you. Focus on me."

Aria let out a helpless laugh and shook her head.

"Anyway, if they are meant to be, they’ll get together eventually. Stop harping about it." Noah held Aria’s cheek gently and turned her face towards him.

"Fine. I’ll only look at you. Alright?"

"Brilliant!"

Noah leaned forward and pecked her lips before spinning her.

Joshua and Ivy’s state was similar to Aria and Noah’s, except that it was Joshua who was interested in Ian and Valerie’s situation.

"Do you think they love each other?" he questioned curiously.

"What?" Ivy was in disbelief. How did Joshua even think about it? Ian and Valerie barely spoke to each other. Given their circumstance, it’d be a great deal if they liked each other, they being in love was far from it.

"I have never seen Ian being this proactive towards the opposite gender."

"And this makes you think that they are in love?" Ivy asked in surprise.

"Why not?" Joshua pulled Ivy closer, making her lean against him, supporting all her weight. "Ian is a good man and Deputy is nice as well. They make a good couple."

Ivy didn’t disagree. Ian and Valerie did make a good couple.

"Let’s leave it to them. Shall we? I’m tired. Shall we rest for some time?"

Joshua’s focus was finally diverted and he led Ivy to the chairs. "Are you hungry? Do you want to have something?"

"Water would be fine for now."

While Joshua retrieved a bottle of water, Ivy watched her loved ones enjoying the night. She was contented and happy and hoped for the peace in their lives to never be disrupted.
