Chapter 838: Updates - Part 2

Late at night, a phone call shattered the silence in the room, and Noah answered it. His exhaustion vanished once he saw the caller’s name.

"Yes, Deputy?"

"Mr. Carter, I have some great news for you. We have managed to track down four bombs. They were hidden in and around our city."

"That’s great news, Deputy. You have worked hard."

"Not at all, Mr. Carter. I’ll call you later. Although Major Meyers is overseeing everything, I also need to report to the authorities. I cannot hide this from them anymore." Valerie sighed, a headache creeping in on her when she thought of her Chief.

’Why do I get such assholes as my Chief?’ she wondered and ended the call after exchanging a few more words.

"Have they found something?" Aria asked as she leaned closer to him.

"Yes, they have tracked down four explosives. We have twenty-four remaining." Noah frowned as he stared at the time. They had eight days and a few hours left and had to detonate the remaining by then. Otherwise, Noah even feared to think what would happen.

"Everything will be fine, Noah. Have faith in Valerie and Major Meyers," Aria assured him and Noah returned a small smile before he laid down on the bed, prompting Aria to follow suit.

A few minutes later, he heard Aria’s even breathing. Although she still couldn’t sleep for more than a few hours, it was better than nothing. However, he couldn’t sleep even after a long time. A strong feeling of uneasiness kept his mind occupied.

’What am I overlooking? Something is wrong. What have I forgotten?’ Noah tossed and turned on his bed. But he couldn’t find anything that could ease his mind. Instead, as time passed, he only felt more restless and the feeling continued until he heard Aria’s cries from beside him. She was having a nightmare again.

"Aria..." Pushing away his thoughts, he moved closer and wrapped her in his arms. Rubbing her back gently, he tried to warm her cold body. By now, he knew what to do and how to calm Aria down.

Although he did manage to calm Aria down, she still woke up. Noah sighed in defeat as he stared at her bloodshot eyes. Once again, she had failed to sleep for more than three hours.

"When did you wake up?" Aria murmured and borrowed into his embrace, seeking more of his warmth. If not for the fleeting rays of the sun entering the room, indicating that it was already morning, she would have loved to remain in his embrace. It was so warm and comfortable.

"Not long ago." Noah didn’t intend to worry Aria. So, he didn’t reveal a word. However, his strange actions didn’t go unnoticed by Aria, and she blinked her eyes open, forcing her exhaustion away.

"What’s wrong, Noah? What happened?" Aria sat up straight and looked at the man staring at the ceiling.

"Nothing...

"Don’t brush me off. I know you. Tell me what’s bothering you," Aria demanded, not giving the man a choice to brush her off carelessly.

"It’s just that..." Noah sighed, not knowing how to reveal what was bothering him. "I feel I’m overlooking things."

"As in?" Aria questioned, trying to gauge Noah’s expression in the darkness. Although it was bright outside, the blackout curtains, hindered the sun rays from entering the room.

"I don’t know. There’s this lingering feeling that I have missed something, that I’m overlooking something. But I can’t point out what exactly." Noah sighed in frustration.

"Maybe you’re are overthinking." Aria tried but stopped when Noah shook his head.

"No, Aria. I have relied on my senses all my life and have seldom been wrong. Something is not right for sure. But I can’t exactly find out what," Noah explained and Aria’s expression morphed until it mirrored his.

Pursing her lips, she thought about it for a while. "Are you listless because Jared isn’t troubling you anymore?" she joked. "You have been so accustomed to having Jared hindering you at every step that you have started to miss him now once he has been captured."

Aria had barely finished speaking when Noah shot up like a rocket and held her shoulders. Even through the darkness, she noticed his shocked eyes looking at her.

"What did you just say?"

Aria blinked a few times, unable to understand what had riled Noah. "Noah, I was just joking. I didn’t..."

"What did you just say?" Noah asked again, his voice concealing a myriad of emotions.

"I.."

"Aria, please repeat what you just said," he pleaded.

"I think you aren’t able to accept it now that Jared isn’t troubling you anymore," Aria repeated what she had told him a few seconds and Noah let go of her instantly.

"Noah, what’s wrong?" Aria noticed Noah’s peculiar expression and switched on the table light, illuminating the room instantly.

"Noah, please say something. You’re scaring me." Aria moved closer to him and looked at him keenly, trying to gain a hint from his expression. But she couldn’t decipher anything from his blank expression.

"Noah..."

"I now realize what I have been overlooking all these days," Noah stated all of a sudden.

"What?" Aria couldn’t comprehend what Noah was saying. It was as if he was speaking in riddles.

"Even if we foiled all of Jared’s plan, he must have prepared some sort of a backup plan. He isn’t someone to let go that easily. And.."

"And?" Aria probed, still reeling in the words Noah had just told her.

"And his backup plan, his ultimate plan has got to do something with me."

"What! Why do you say so?" Aria was spooked by the possibility. Jared was captured. But the possibility of them being in danger wasn’t over yet. How she wished to chop the man who had reduced them to headless chickens. What a menace to society!

"We all know Jared is obsessed with me. He can’t wait to torture me to death. He must have prepared something for me in case he was captured one day."

Aria still couldn’t fathom where Noah was going. "Other than the explosives?"

"Those explosives are to destroy the country. He must have thought of something just for me. Something unique and devastating."

This time, Aria was convinced and her eyes widened in horror. "What do we do now? If what you said is true, we don’t have much time."

Noah bit the inside if his cheek as he looked at her. "I guess it’s time to meet Jared again. Only he can tell me what he has planned for me."
