Chapter 778: Surgery successful?
Chapter 778: Surgery successful?
Joshua seemed as if his soul had left his body. The truth was like a slap to his face and the print was evident. If he was broken before, he was now reduced to smithereens as he cried silently to himself. Not once did he move from his place and Ian and Noah felt miserable to see him this way. He was their friend and it distressed them to see him in agony.
But his actions had crossed all their limits as well. By hurting Ivy just to protect himself, he had shown how low he could fall and how inconsiderate he was of other’s feelings. The lady had given him all and was even hoping to marry him. But he had kicked her feelings away and disregarded them as if it was some used foil paper.
Every time, they thought about Ivy and how she was fighting for her life inside the OT, they felt nothing but hatred and fury course through them. Joshua had fucked up big time and there was no room for apology or regret.
A few more hours passed and nurses kept rushing in and out of the OT as they kept supplying the necessary medical aid to the surgeons. None of them lost hope. Since the surgery had lasted for such a long time, it meant Ivy was still there, fighting for her life.
"Please come back, Ivy. Please." Ian begged desperately as he kept pacing back and forth. A surgery that lasted this long meant good news, especially considering the severity of her wounds. The doctors were trying their best, Ivy was trying her best and that was what he needed at that moment.
"Please fight, Ivy. Please. You need to avenge all that happened to you today. You need to kill Jared for what he did today. Please come back." He pleaded, not knowing his thoughts resonated with Noah at that moment.
Noah too kept praying for her to fight and survive the battle. As he looked at Aria and Oliver who had not said a word for a long time, he continued to plead in his mind, hoping that Ivy would somehow listen to him and make it out alive.
’We need you alive. Please just come back to us." He thought and leaned back before stretching his legs slightly. His entire body had gone numb after sitting in the same position for a long time. But he didn’t mind it. If Aria and Oliver needed his support, he was willing to sit like this forever.
The door to the OT opened and this time, all the surgeons exited. Ian was the first one the rush to them and looked hopefully at them.
"Doctor?" That was all he could manage to say. He even dreaded to think the worst as he waited for the doctor to speak.
"We have tried our best and the patient is a fighter we must say. She survived the surgery."
Ian sighed in relief and at that moment, he felt his life returning to him. The weight on him vanished and a wave of exhaustion hit him.
"But the critical period is not over yet. She survived the surgery. But that does not mean she is out of danger. Unless she wakes up, we cannot say anything and we do not know when she’ll wake up."
Ian understood what the doctor was trying to say. Even though he didn’t say it directly, he discerned the meaning behind his words. Being a doctor was a bane at times like these. Ivy was alive but had slipped into a coma and the doctors didn’t know when she’d wake up or if she’d even wake up or not.
"Thank you, Doctor. You’ve worked hard." Ian was genuinely grateful to all the people who had operated on Ivy. If not for their diligence and not giving up until the last moment, there was no way Ivy could have made it.
"It’s our job, Doctor Davis. The patient will be moved to the ICU shortly and you may meet her. But only two at a time, please."
"Thank you, Doctor. Thank you very much."
The doctor smiled at him before glancing at Joshua who was still on the ground and the three people sitting on the chair before he left the place.
Ian sighed and turned around to look at Noah. All he did not was nod at him and saw Noah’s face breaking out into a smile of relief.
"Aria, Dad, the surgery is over." Noah tried. But there was no reaction from either of them.
"Aria, Dad." He tried again and this time with a louder voice and both of them snapped out of their daze instantly.
"Huh?" They looked at Noah blankly, their eyes red and swollen with tears.
"The surgery is over, Aria, Mr. West." Ian approached them and barely had he finished speaking when the two sprung to their legs.
"How is she? Is she..." Aria’s lips trembled as she looked at Ian expectantly.
Oliver couldn’t speak a word. He was scared to even think of the worst, let alone ask Ian about it.
"She survived the surgery, Aria." Ian hesitated but eventually, didn’t hide the truth from them. "But she’s in a coma."
Aria’s legs gave away and if not for Noah’s quick reflexes, she’d have fallen for sure. Oliver’s state was no less different from his daughter’s and Ian had to hold him upright lest he stumbled and fell.
"May we see here?" Aria questioned as she held back her tears.
"Not yet, Aria. She’ll be moved to the ICU soon. We can see her then." Ian spoke to her gently. "Before that, let us all eat something, shall we?"
Noticing that she was about to object, he continued, "Ivy needs you, Aria and you need to be strong to take care of her. Please, can you eat something for her?"
That shut her up and she nodded slowly. "Good. Noah, take Mr. West and Aria to the canteen. I..." He turned towards Joshua who was yet to come out of his trance.
Noah nodded and nudged them gently as he led them towards the canteen. Ian waited until they were out of sight before approaching Joshua. Although he didn’t wish to talk to him anymore, Joshua was after all his friend and the man needed to eat. He couldn’t just leave him alone like that. His heart refused to do so.
Whatever would happen between Joshua and Ivy was in the future. The man needed to eat to stay healthy and he’d make sure he did.
"Joshua," He squatted before him and held his shoulders. "Get up."
No reaction.
"Joshua, get up." He shook him lightly.
Again, no reaction.
"Joshua, the surgery is over. Ivy made it."
That caught the man’s attention and he finally broke out of his stupor. "What did you just say?"
"The surgery is over. Ivy made it." Ian said, not hiding the hope in his words.
"Ivy," Joshua stood up suddenly, his face breaking out into a smile of joy. "I knew it. She had to make it. How could she leave me? She can’t. She won’t. Never." He shook his head. "She’s yet to slap me for what I did to her. She can’t leave just like that."
Ian didn’t know if he should smile and rejoice with him or not at that moment. Joshua’s love for Ivy was evident. He loved her dearly. But his love didn’t have any trust. He didn’t trust her and her feelings for him and without trust, any relationship was bound to fail.
"Where is she? I want to see her." Joshua looked at Ian, his teary eyes twinkling like stars.
"She’s not out yet. She’ll be moved to the ICU. You may see her then."
Joshua nodded, unable to contain his excitement.
"Before that, let’s fill our stomachs. We need energy to take care of her."
"You are right." Joshua didn’t defy him. "I need to stay healthy to take care of Ivy. I’m not allowed to fall sick. She needs me."
Ian didn’t know if Joshua was mentally stable or not at that moment. The man looked totally fine but not at the same time and it scared him to see him this way.
But the thought remained for a fleeting moment. Ian pushed it to the back of his mind and accompanied Joshua silently, making sure to send a silent message to the guards who were guarding the entire floor. This was his hospital and there was no way in hell he’d allow anyone to hurt Ivy. Never.
