Chapter 756: Subduing the old man
No one in the room was surprised by Valerie’s stance in this matter. It was true that unlike her, they had not gone through the misery of losing someone close to them. So, they could not empathize with her except Aria and Ivy.
They were the only ones who understood her predicament. They were close to losing their father and if not for Noah, Joshua and Ian saving them, they too would have been in the same boat as Valerie’s.
Jonathan lowered his head, his face ashen and filled with guilt. "It was all my fault. All my fault." He sighed in regret. Every word of hers had hit his heart deeply and he could not refute her accusations. It was the truth. If only he had been careful, he could have saved a lot of lives.
"We are sorry." Maggie smiled at them apologetically and looked at Joshua who shook his head immediately. She had nothing to apologize for. Valerie was not wrong and it would only make them more ashamed if they were to accept this apology.
"I’ll take a look at Valerie. She must not be in her right state of mind." Maggie nodded at them before she too departed from the place with Ryder and Preston.
Before leaving Preston did not forget to nod at Noah who narrowed his eyes at him thoughtfully.
’Interesting.’ He thought and smiled to himself.
"It was all my fault. I am a sinner." Jonathan continued to hold himself responsible for all that had happened. He could not bring himself out of the guilt that was consuming him slowly. In his happiness of Noah forgiving him, he had completely forgotten about the other people he had hurt.
Valerie’s words showed him the reality he had been trying to hide from for a long time and it was then he realized how delusional he had been all along. Even if he was not a criminal, it did not change the truth that he had not stopped the criminal from committing the crimes.
"Grandpa, grandpa." Noah closed his eyes, unable to see his old man in agony. Even though he understood Valerie’s state, he also understood his grandfather’s situation. Both of them were right in their place, although his grandpa was still slightly at fault. He did not know how to pacify the old man and he looked around seeking help.
However, just like him, nobody knew how to comfort the Old Carter. They too looked at him helplessly. In the end, it was Aria who came to help him.
"Grandpa," She squatted before the old man and held his palms. She lowered her head to look at him but the man averted his gaze. He was unable to face anyone. He felt utterly ashamed and remorseful.
"Grandpa," Aria’s tone changed and it seemed as if she was about to scold him. "If you are going to avoid looking at me, then I’ll be angry."
Noah was speechless by her words and he didn’t know whether to laugh or to cry. He looked at her strangely. But his lady did not even look at him much to his dismay. She had her attention fixed solely on his grandfather.
"If you continue crying, then I’ll stop talking to you and you do not want to test me on that. I’m not like your grandson. You’ll have to spend a lot more effort to pacify me. Do you want to try me?" She threatened, not at all caring that she was speaking to the mighty Jonathan Carter.
He may be a powerful and untouchable person to the world. But to her, he was her lover’s grandfather, a man who needed to be shown he was loved by others and they were not angry and disgusted by him.
While everyone was amused by Aria’s tactics, the man in question looked at her aggrievedly. Was Noah not enough, now even his wife was threatening him. But he did not voice out his thoughts and slowly raised his head to face.
"Good." Aria praised as if she was talking to a little kid. Although her tone astonished everyone present in the room, it was the old Carter’s reaction that shocked them all the more. Before her, the mighty man showed no resistance and followed her instructions like a good boy.
"Ivy, pinch me." Joshua whispered. But it was loud enough that not just Ivy, even Oliver heard him and he stifled a smile.
"What?" Ivy looked at Joshua as if she was looking at a moron. ’Did Joshua become stupid due to the sudden influx of information?’ She wondered, her forehead creasing in worry.
"Pinch me, Ivy. I feel I’m dreaming." Joshua continued, not noticing his girlfriend’s strange expression. He was focused on Aria who had subdued the impenetrable and fearsome old Carter. Who knew he would witness such an amazing scene?
Not knowing what was running in Joshua’s mind, Ivy adhered to his words and pinched his right bicep hard. The stinging pain broke Joshua’s train of thought and he gasped in pain. "Ouch, violence woman." He rebuked immediately and glared at Ivy who stared back at him innocently.
"Didn’t you ask me to pinch you? Why are you acting as if I committed a crime?" She shot back and Joshua had no come back for her words. It was true that it was he who had asked her to pinch him and she had done just that. So, it was his fault in the first place.
Oliver couldn’t control his laughter this time and he burst out laughing, garnering everyone’s attention to him. But he was not embarrassed at being caught. Instead, he just shook his head and stood up as he continued smiling.
"Ivy and Joshua, I wish you two stay this way forever. You look lovely together."
With that, he turned around and left the living room. His departure prompted the others too to leave and eventually only Aria and the members of the Carter family were left in the living room.
